“Charming Hotel”
Reviewed August 18, 2014

A lovely mix of faded charm, wonky floors, attentive staff but with large comfortable beds and modern bathrooms. It was a pleasure to relax in the comfortable bar area overlooking the main square of Tavistock with its dark stone buildings and pannier market. Snacks and more substantial meals were available and these were served by friendly and helpful staff. Reception staff were extremely pleasant and gave us an information sheet on the history of the building. A very interesting book on Tavistock was also available in the bedroom with plenty of pictures of the past inhabitants and how the town looked then. Our large, well appointed bedroom was at the front of the building with two windows overlooking the church opposite and one in the bathroom overlooking the square. Breakfast was plentiful and tasty with a very good Eggs Benedict as well as full English, fruit and pastries. A very pleasant experience.

Room Tip: Front rooms could be a little noisy for light sleepers but have the best views.

Location was excellent, right near main square yet still quiet. Ample parking. Staff at front desk were helpful and friendly. Room had nicely renovated bathroom and had been updated but not to point of being featureless. We had a lovely cream tea here with enormous scones and ample clotted cream. Staff provided it on a complementary basis as their sister hotel, the Two Bridges had screwed up our reservation which required we leave after one night. The Two Bridges had offered us an upgraded room at the Bedford but failed to advise the Bedford's staff who were left holding the bag when we arrived as they were fully booked. Staff in the dining room kindly adjusted our breakfast requests which were off menu. Think the Bedford should disown their relationship with Two Bridges as the Bedford - from food to staff to ambiance - was far better across the board

I recently enjoyed a meal at The Bedford with friends, none of us had eaten at the hotel before and genuinely couldn't have enjoyed it more!
We dined in the restaurant which had a really nice feel about it, the food was great (brasserie style), the staff that served us were all very friendly and not over the top.
Couldn't recommended it enough :) You must try the triple cooked chips!!

Many thanks for your recent review on your Bedford dining experience. I am delighted it was enjoyed by all.

We have recently appointed a new head chef to manage the kitchen under the existing executive head chef. We concentrate on producing freshly prepared seasonal food using the abundance of local suppliers we have in the area. We like to add a twist to our traditional dishes on our brasserie menu and our chefs create daily specials for lunch and dinner.

We look forward to welcoming you and your friends back again.

We popped in for an early afternoon snack and bottle of champagne in the modestly sized garden to the side of the hotel. Polite and efficient service, tasty snacks beautifully presented. Also looking at our table neighbours the afternoon teas are rather good too!

Well what can I say. We held our wedding at the Bedford hotel on the 28th June 2014. We were so well looked after from start to finish. The wedding organiser could not of done more to help, the toast master on the day made sure everything went smoothly, the food was delicious, rooms were fantastic and all staff were so friendly, helpful and welcoming. We would honestly recommend the Bedford hotel as a wedding venue to anyone looking for a beautiful setting to hold their special day. Thank you to all the staff at the Bedford, you helped make our day a day that we will truly cherish forever!!

Good off road private car park with easy walk into the reception area. This was my first stay and I was pleasantly greeted at reception. The room was spacious but dated although the bathroom was modern and well appointed. The bed was comfortable and clean and I enjoyed a quiet nights sleep. The bar area is a typical hotel bar designed for guest and therefore lacks atmosphere.
Good food with a varied choice selection and portion sizes were plentiful.
Overall a functional hotel that is friendly but in need of updating

We made an advance booking for the night with our baby and arranged a travel cot for our stay. Our room was located up two flights of stairs and there was no lift. On one of the hottest days of the year I had to get the pram up and down the stairs! Our room was spacious and the decor nice. The bathroom was filthy and there were dead flies on the floor. I did wonder why they had gone to the bother to renovate the room but not the bathroom which was in desperate need of updating.
With the hot weather a glass of water was needed but no water in the room and we had to ask for a glass at reception.
On the whole I did expect better considering the cost of the overnight stay. This hotel is in serious need of modernising and needs to be more family friendly. I couldn't say a bad word about the staff though!
