“A great break”
Reviewed April 19, 2014

Another fantastic Peel Hotel. Having stayed at this Groups hotel in Bournemouth, we thought we would book for a long weekend in Oxford. Actually, the hotel is in Wallingford, outside Oxford, but the stay was well worthwhile. With ample parking, it was easy to get to, notwithstanding road closures and road works (not their fault at all). The hotel is lovely. It is oozing character, and has it's own charm mixed in. The modern decoration is sympathetic to the property and I was enthralled. The bedrooms were very comfortable, the only omission may be the lack of a fridge, but that's a personal thing. The courtyard is lovely and we did have good weather s it was a lovely meeting place. The bar was buzzing on the Saturday night, but we still found room to sit down and chat. Conversly, it was quite quiet on the Sunday evening. The food was good, with a good choice on the menu.
Although we went to the County to specifically visit Oxford, we found Wallingford to be a charming town, with lovely little shops and an antique centre on the doorstep. Behind the Hotel, literally a two minute walk from the car park, is the old Castle and gardens - well worth a visit. It was only a five minute stroll to the bus stop for a direct link into Oxford, where we were dropped on the corner of the main street with access to shops and Trinity College. The bus journey did take a while, but I'm sure that was only due to the road closures that weekend - just our luck!
The one thing that stood out about The George Hotel was the efficience of the staff. The Receptionist was lovely and couldn't do enough for us and the two girls who served n the dining room and bar were exceptional. When a member of staff tells you that she loves her job and loves being at the hotel, you know you're at the right place.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor and there was a charming conservatory outside our room looking onto the...

We booked this hotel using the gold voucher offer of 2 nights bed breafast and evening meal, having previously enjoyed the same offer at their sister hotel in Bournemouth.
Received a warm friendly welcome on check in and given all the information needed for our stay.
The deal includes an executive room, but to be honest it did not live up to expectations. I can understand that if you are in the old 16th century part of the hotel that you live with some compromises, but we were in the extended modern part.
The bathroom was small and the paint yellowing with age, I found the bed very firm but okay.
There is an old defunct 80s radio built into the headboard!.
As stated in another review I Also noticed a smell in the ground floor corridor.
Quite a busy bar and noisy when football on tv but great helpful staff behind bar.
Food good standard although limited choice of an evening.
Would return if in area but probaly find a quieter bar and come back for a nightcap

It's always a pleasure to go in this hotel.
the service is good, the rooms are clean, calm and very spacious.
the car park is just behind the hotel.
it's my favorite address when I'm going to hithercorft near Wallingford

the lounge and the bar are very nice and very typical, ideal to meet and discuss with the customers around the fireplace.

We spent two nights at this hotel, when we arrived tv was not working in our room, they moved us immediately to one opposite. Hotel staff were extremely pleasant and helpful at all times. The food was excellent; continental breakfast followed by selection of cooked then toast croissant etc, teas&coffee. Evening meal choice was not extensive but portions were very good and tasty. On the second night I had the best chicken curry ever!!
Bedroom had king size bed, sky tv tea making facility and was large and comfortable. For the price this was an amazing deal through Peel Hotels Plc. Wallingford very pretty, park & ride to Oxford great. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, thank you all.

Room Tip: Originally we had a twin room which was more than adequate but tv did not work so they moved us to r...

The George teems with history and Wallingford is a beautiful location. Staff at the hotel were really friendly. We got to stay in the infamous teardrop room. Sadly no ghost. The decor is a little dated but clean. TV needed updating and the shower needed some fixing but the hotel was all scrupulously clean. Food was good and overall for value the George cannot be beaten. However, without the Golden Ticket I'm not sure I'd have paid full rate for the facilites.

Room Tip: If you are brave try the Teardrop Room

Despite some positives, my wife and I were disappointed in our Peel Hotel Golden Ticket Weekend dinner, bed and breakfast accommodation in the George. Our expectations were set by a similar weekend deal a couple of years ago at a sister Peel Hotel, the Bull in Peterborough which we really couldn't fault, but sadly, despite the puzzling number of four and five blob reviews on Trip Advisor, The George failed significantly, in our eyes to come up to anything like the same standard. Please see below for the list of pro's and cons by way of explanation.

POSITIVES
Staff were very friendly, helpful and professional especially in the restaurant.
The food at dinner was of a high standard, well presented and fresh.
Breakfast was also up to the mark, if a little chaotic on the second of our morning's, again the food was freshly prepared to order.
Room was clean and well serviced.

NEGATIVES
Parking!
Very unimpressed to arrive on Friday evening at a hotel which promises 'ample free parking' on its website and find it full to overflowing. On enquiring at reception I was apologetically invited either to double park (!) or make use of a public car park. Simply unacceptable under any circumstances and especially on a wet and windy February evening. A very negative start to the stay was avoided when a space fortunately became available as I was walking back to the car to share the bad news with my wife.
On returning on Saturday evening after a day out we were again presented with the same problem.
The reasons for this quickly became clear - see below

The Bar.
Both days of our stay, the bar was packed from early to late evening predominantly with male football supporters watching one of three (!) large screen TV's showing non-stop SKY sports. We were unaware that we were coming to a hotel with a 'Sports Bar'. At an old and historic hotel selling weekend break packages to couples it is surely a reasonable expectation that one should be able to enjoy a leisurely and peaceful pre and/or post dinner drink. This simply wasn't possible on either evening and whilst we recognise that the hotel needs to run as a year-round profitable business and this means catering to a local pub trade at quiet times, this should not be at the expense of residential guests who aren't on boozy night out with their mates catching the game. Why three TV's covering all areas of the bar and one playing at high volume? The whole set-up and ambience was at odds with the hotel's marketing as a place for 'relaxed socialising' and showed little respect for its residents and the packed bar undoubtedly was the cause of the parking problem....again the guests suffer.

Shower.
Water pressure so low as to make the shower unusable. Again unacceptable in a hotel of this class. Using the bath should be an option and not a necessity as it was for us.

Decor/Smell
Less serious this but still worthy of mention.
The decor in the rooms is dated and some of the furniture tatty and in need of replacement, though I emphasise that our room was clean.
The restaurant area in particular was in need of refurbishment.
There was a peculiar and unpleasant smell in the ground floor corridor (off reception). This did not extend to the upper corridors (our room was on the third floor) and did seem to abate over the period of our stay and we reasoned that perhaps the carpets had been recently cleaned and were in the process of drying...but no signs indicating this. Strange and not at all pleasant and another thing didn't help to improve our impressions of the place.

Overall then, not a particularly satisfactory stay. Despite its polite and willing staff, some work really needs to be done at the George to bring it up to the standard expected of a Peel Hotel and an establishment, let us remember, that charges a minimum residential rack rate of £120 per night. Above all else it needs to be run with the interests of its paying residential guests as a priority rather than for the benefit of the local 'punters'. Until such a time we sadly can't recommend it nor, can we align our review with the many positive ones on this site.
