Owner description: Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden was created around 1830 by Thomas Parr, a Warrington banker, as part of his estate totalling 150 acres. In the 1950's the estate was broken up and land was sold. In the 1970's the family mansion was destroyed in a fire and was demolished. The only surviving part of the original estate was the walled garden which over time became neglected and managed by different groups. As a result of assistance from the local community, the Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden and funding provided by English Partnerships and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the four-acre walled garden has now been restored to its former glory. The garden compromises of a Victorian kitchen garden with eight fully restored glass houses and a pleasure garden with three ponds. Today, this secret garden is a true asset to the community with an array of events, school programmes and workshops for adults, groups, children and families. Charges apply for some activities and events. New amenities include a community space, toilets, picnic tables and the Fountain Room Cafe which is open from 10.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays & Sundays. The cafe may also open for selected events so please check the website or contact the office in advance. Closed Mondays

“Wonderful walled garden”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

This is a lovely place to visit. It is open each afternoon between 1pm and 4pm and there is no entry charge. There are three small lakes, lovely flowers and a stunning vegetable and fruit garden. In season fruit and vegetable are on sale some days - mainly Sundays but you can request them from the gardener at other times. The garden has recently been awarded Heritage Lottery funding to renovate the extensive dilapidated Victorian glass-houses. The renovation should have started in Spring 2013 but has been subject to administrative delays which has sadly resulted in the temporary cancellation of the previous regular Sunday afternoon refreshment sales which drew large numbers of visitors. This has resulted in a considerable loss of revenue for the garden which is supported by a large team of volunteers and the lower numbers visiting, despite the recent warm weather, will also be affecting revenue from the sale of produce. Well worth and visit and supporting this excellent, beautiful and peaceful facility.

“Very peaceful, lovely garden”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2013

As another reviewer says, this really is a hidden gem. It is quite small and it must be said that there are at present no tea rooms or loos, as the reconstruction and rebuilding has not yet been commenced.

Its main attraction is its tranquility - it is stunningly relaxing. It really is a credit to the community of volunteers who look after it. Check out the website for opening times and information.

“A hidden Gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013

Having lived about 10 minutes from here for over 18 years before I found it, couldn't believe what a lovely place was so near to home. A sanctuary for a quiet walk around lovely surroundings and if you are lucky enough to visit on Sunday afternoon during the summer, you may even be able enjoy tea and cake in the café.
