Attraction details
Owner description: Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden was created around 1830 by Thomas Parr, a Warrington banker, as part of his estate totalling 150 acres. In the 1950's the estate was broken up and land was sold. In the 1970's the family mansion was destroyed in a fire and was demolished. The only surviving part of the original estate was the walled garden which over time became neglected and managed by different groups. As a result of assistance from the local community, the Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden and funding provided by English Partnerships and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the four-acre walled garden has now been restored to its former glory. The garden compromises of a Victorian kitchen garden with eight fully restored glass houses and a pleasure garden with three ponds. Today, this secret garden is a true asset to the community with an array of events, school programmes and workshops for adults, groups, children and families. Charges apply for some activities and events. New amenities include a community space, toilets, picnic tables and the Fountain Room Cafe which is open from 10.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays & Sundays. The cafe may also open for selected events so please check the website or contact the office in advance. Closed Mondays

The gardens and refreshments are all manned by volunteers, the cakes in the little restaurant are first class and the gardens a joy to see.

“A local gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2012

The gardens are lovely and well tended. You can buy local produce at reasonable prices, enjoy a coffee and slice of cake, plus there are regular community events. The money raised from the events goes back into the gardens so is for a good cause.

“A wonderful place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2012

The Walled Gardens in Grappenhall is such a lovely place to visit and have a walk around. There are many Ducks there and at the moment one Duckling who is growing well. From time to time a Heron will land aswell. The flowers through summer are beautiful, with such gorgeous colours.
On a sunday they have a little cafe, all manned by voluteers.
Worth a visit.

“well tended garden”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

This is a well tended wall garden although a little difficult to find the entrance to the car park - lots of ornate gates but none that you could drive through on the day we visited anyway, although this may improve at weekends! The cafe was closed too but this also may be open at weekend. It was quite a hot day so if you do go take a drink if you plan to sit a while or take advantage of the other walks around the area.
