“A whiff of the 1970s British hotel...”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

Stayed two days for a conference, and can echo many of the comments made by others. The building is interesting, especially the communal areas, and feels like a fine Edwardian country house. The grounds are also very pretty, and the room was very spacious. The bar staff also know how to make classic cocktails properly. I also found the staff pleasant and positive and helpful, and despite other reviews, the food was broadly good, except for breakfast. These are the good points, and they are important.

The negatives, unfortunately, are those listed by others ; for the price, the decor is dated and slightly institutional. It is perhaps best represented by the large and obviously plastic fern that dominates the otherwise-pretty foyer. The king size bed consisted of two singles bracketed together, and the mattress was sloppy and uncomfortable. The rooms were alternately cold and unbearably stuffy, and the MDFI-veneer furniture was probably acquired from an Argos sale fifteen years ago. When I hung my towel over the rail of the shower curtain, the cheap plastic fitting came away from the ceiling. The external window-sill was clearly rotten and nearly crumbling. Wifi is free in the communal areas but not available in the room, though there is ethernet - still, it's a handheld world out there nowadays...

As noted above, the food at dinner was good, but the breakfast was grimly institutional - slimy fried eggs in a large warming tray, greyish, undercooked bacon, no sign of preserves, etc. I could have lived with the deficiencies and still thought it just scraped a pass mark..... but then I ordered a whisky at the bar. A double measure of Laphroig 10 year old - about £25 a bottle in the shops - landed me with a tab for £17, with a space for a gratuity. That was the moment that I realised that this was a hotel that really doesn't deserve to be patronised by me (or anyone else) again.

Dear Mr Baglin

Thank you for completing a review with regards to your recent visit to the Oatlands Park Hotel, and i was disappointed to see that you did not enjoy your stay as we would have wished.

The majority of our accommodation has been recently refurbished, with the small remainder due to be completed next year. I am sorry that your bedroom was not to your liking, however had you made us aware of this at the time my Duty Manager or Reception Manager would have been only to happy to show you alternative accommodation which i am sure would have completely suited your particular requirements.

We do have an ongoing program of preventative maintenance, with the majority of our bedrooms completely refurbished. Nevertheless, i have asked Housekeeping and Maintenance to prioritize the room you stayed in, and act on any attention required.

I was however, very surprised to hear that you did not enjoy breakfast with us, the feedback we receive in this respect is almost always excellent, as can be seen, as an example, by the constructive reviews that we receive on Trip advisor.

Please do contact me should you be staying in the area again, we would be delighted to restore your faith in Oatlands Park Hotel, as i am certain will be the case.

The hotel was beautiful, spotlessly clean, very welcome and the staff were all excellent and went above and beyond what we expected in everything they did. We booked a delux room directly with the hotel. Meral the Reception Manager was excellent! She promised us a lovely room and we stayed in room 1218. The room was spacious and very nice. The hotel provided us a cot for our 2 year old daughter. Meral was so great with her and nothing was to much trouble. A big thank you to everyone, we had an amazing stay. We will come back!

We stayed for one night for a party and dinner. The check in was fine and the staff friendly but I was a bit disappointed with the room. It was pretty tired looking, with drab soft furnishings and smelled a little musty. However, there was a large window which opened so we freshened the air a bit! There was a completely empty mini bar fridge and just bare basics for tea and coffee making. It was clean though. Our dinner was delicious and the breakfast was the normal fare but nicely done and I did ask for a cappuccino which was really good. Overall, it is a comfy, old fashioned place but definitely no wow factor.

Stayed on the 3rd.November 2012 as a break from Neighbours from Hell's 60th. birthday party.
The staff were fantastic as always (we have known the place for years as a wedding/funeral wake venue for years). The rooms are tradiitional but the staff are brilliant!
We have to highlight the Duty Manager that night as a star...My wife is a light sleeper and the fire works in the village were loud, so we asked the reception if they had any cotton wool she could block her ears with! Within minutes the Duty Manager appeared with a pack of airline ear plugs from a flight she had recently been on...She had driven to her house to get them!
That was above the call of duty...

Room Tip: Choose a 2nd. Floor room as the quaint age of the property, you can hear footsteps above the 1st.flo...
