Went to the restraunt 5 years ago, stunning food, fair price, large group of us, food came out fast and had no complaints.
Returned last night (26th jan 2013) service was great, ordered our steaks, came out as ordered in a good time, unfortunatly one of the sirloins had a lot of chewy silver skin running though it and full of fat, sent it back and another one was sent out the same needless to say we sent it back for an alturnative but the chef refused, he was very aggressive when he eventually came down, saying the steak was good however he wont charge but will not replace it, he also shouted at us telling us never to return (not that we would)
The table next to us also sent back 3 steaks!!

Such a shame because sometimes you do get a dodge steak, if he just replaced it and was polite we would have been happy but he was just rude and not a very nice person! very unprofessional!!

We have been coming here for a number of years for great steaks, good home made desserts and nice Arundel ales. All of our family ask to come here when they visit. Last week we came with family including 2 and 5 year old children, who had come all the way from NZ. John cooked them a small portion of steak served on the same platters at the adults (but platters were not hot) and didn't even charge for their meals! Adults steaks were tender and perfect "medium-rare" as ordered. The children were even given a few jelly babies at the end of the meal.

I was here with a group as one of them had heard the steaks were good.
First impressions were that a less appealing restaurant would be hard to imagine. The decor if you can call it that was bereft of any style or quality. I ordered a pint of beer which came out of a plastic/cardboard 'barrel'. Pretty much sums up this quirky (but not in a good way) restaurant.
The starters were all suspects for 'out of the catering pack and into the deep fryer'. As proved to be the scampi I ordered. The side salad had no dressing. The rump steak I ordered was indeed good but the accompanying chips and onion rings were poor. The bill for 7 was over 220 pounds. It felt way way too much. Nothing would induce me to return to this restaurant.

Amazing and John cares a lot about the service!! He is very conscious that if the steak is not cooked the way you wanted it he will replace it and apologise, it's a lovely atmosphere and the food is perfect

Having heard about the quality of Macmillan's steaks I had been looking forward to going there. The first thing that struck me was the greasy spoon like appearance, which in retrospect was the best thing about the experience. The food was simply terrible, the sirloin tasted boiled, the burger was a ball of cooked mince, the rump had a mushy consistency and the rib eye was almost certainly not even rib eye. Nothing was cooked as we had ordered and nothing was seasoned, in fact other than the chips (which 5 of us had to share a bowl of) everything was awful. when we asked for ketchup it had to be used while the waitress stood there as there was one bottle for the entire restaurant. I would honestly rather sit with my balls in a bowl of acid for an hour than return to Macmillan's. Maybe they good a good deal of meat from the recent badger cull either way I cannot urge you enough to avoid this place. Even when we did complain the waitress just nodded and brought the bill over. Prices would have been acceptable, even good if the food was anywhere near edible.
