“very disappointed, room dirty, bathroom dirty and very very tired”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2009

Hotel looks great from the outside, but once you go in everything goes wrong, the communal areas are dirty, the carpet in the bar area is disgusting, looks like it hasn't been properly cleaned in months, if not years. Our room at the back of the hotel (away from the noise of the cinema next door) was very tired, the carpet didn't seem to fit properly, the windows and window sills were dirty, the bathroom needed ripping out and starting again, tiles were cracked, sealing missing and bath panel suffering from water damage and disintegrating. The only good thing i can say is the breakfast staff are helpful,,, but that is small consulation

The pictures on their web site make the hotel look charming and romantic, which is what I expected for a Birthday weekend away, however when we were given the key to our room dissapointed in rather an understatement! The room - which was not situated in the main part of the hotel - but in fact a 70's add on at the rear of the main 17th century building was basic, stank of smoke and was an absolute let down- however when I rang to reception they agreed to try and find an alternative room, we were then given a room in the main part, which was 'old' but clean and full of character, the staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Stayed there overnight in October as I had a meeting in central Banbury the next morning.
The building is lovely, for these willing to stay in a 17th aristocratic dwelling. Room was comfortable was good bedding, I slept like a baby...
Dinner was great with a Glass of their "Grands Vins" selection... a bit of a treat once in while never arms you!!
Breakfast was very good with all you can imagine and service was with a smile and attentive.
Lots of attention from the staff during the stay..
So I will go back again and recommend this place to friends.
I am getting use to the Mercure Hotels as I do tend to use them quite on more regular basis.
Well done see you soon

The Whately is a lovely 17th-century building with immaculate rooms, comfortable beds, a cozy bar and very nice restaurant. The front-desk staff is very friendly and accommodating. The breakfast buffet includes a wide selecdtion of warm, freshly-baked breads, cereals, pastries, and cooked foods. Yyou can also order items such as eggs benedict (which were wonderful) and smoked fish, and the service is speedy and friendly. I especially enjoyed the wonderfully strong press-pot coffee every morning, delivered with a rack of warm toast.

One drawback to staying there in August is that the window needs to be kept open to keep the room comfortable, so light and traffic and conversations can disrupt your sleep a bit. But the location is very nice, close to some very good pubs and shops, and right next to the historic Banbury Cross and a beautiful old church.

Overall a very nice stay in a stately old building (with an interesting history), in the heart of a charming city.

I have stayed in Banbury for the past 6 years on business and this hotel is just rubbish. The rooms smell and the bed linen is old and sometimes dirty. The service is terrible and reminds me of an epiosde of Fawlty Towers. Try the local B&B's they are usually nicer and better value. If you are determined to stay there ask for a room on the back, unless you like the sound of church bells at all times of the day and night.

We stayed at the Whately Hall Hotel for 3 nights and had a wonderful stay. The room was large, clean and comfortable, with a big en-suite bathroom. All staff were very friendly and helpful, and we especially enjoyed the buffet breakfast in the wonderful oak-panelled room. We also had drinks in the beautiful bar. The hotel has retained most of its old features, and staff were happy to show us a hidden stair case and inform us about the amazing history of the hotel. We can highly recommend staying there.

My wife and I stayed here for five nights while on business travel. Whately (pronounced Wait-lee) is a beautiful old building dating back to the mid-1600's. The garden behind, and a pub with outdoor tables in front, make it a wonderful place to enjoy the ambience. The floors do creak and one feels surrounded in history; in fact, according to the hotel legend there is even a ghost that visits room 52, although it has not made an appearance for nearly 100 years. There were two weddings there during our stay and it is understandable as the Whately does provide a romantic setting. The location is excellent, right next to the Banbury Cross in the center of town.

On the downside, the rooms are a bit small and there is no A/C. Normally this would not be a problem, but there was a heat wave during our stay and even opening a window did not provide relief. To the hotel's credit, they did include a small oscillating fan in each room, but they should have bought the next larger model... The breakfast was just okay and not as expansive as I have had in other hotels.

Ending on a positive note, the hotel staff was excellent. They did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable and apologized profusely about the lack of A/C. I highly recommend this property if you are planning a romantic weekend or love to stay in old historic inns.
