Mercure Banbury Whately Hall Hotel

Reviewed March 7, 2013

We recently stayed at the Whately Hall and called ahead to advise we were not going to arrive until probably after 9.30pm on the Saturday evening which I was told would be no problem. We were coming from a long way and as I already knew we were going to be arriving late I looked on the hotels website the day before for food options and confirmed that it said 24 hour room service. Rather than eat before we left we decided to just get there as quick as we can and order something light to our room when we got there.
On arrival at the hotel we checked into our room, which was ok, really hot but we just turned both radiators off and looked at the menu which had a good selection of sandwiches, wraps and a couple of hot dishes marked as 24 hour. My husband called to order us room service and was told ' kitchen is shut' and the phone went down!
I went down to reception to explain that we had come a long way and just wanted a sandwich as we had been told it was 24 hour and the chap at reception said he would see if he could get me some cold sandwiches. I ordered 2 from the menu and went upstairs back to the room. The phone rang a minute later and we were told that nothing could be done except ham, 2 plain ham sandwiches it was then!
I know that is not a major thing to complain about but at the end of the day don't advertise that you have 24 hour food and have menus in the room with choices available if it is not something you actually do!

This is our second stay at the Whately Hall, we returned after having a such a lovely time previously and were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome, we were offered a choice of room in either the old part of the hotel or the more modern new part, we opted for the old part and were then offered an upgrade for half price. Money well spent, we stayed in room 33 which was more of a mini-apartment with a bathroom and TV/reading room on one level then up a couple of steps to a small landing with built in wardrobes and into the bedroom which had a lovely view of St Marys Church and Banbury Cross. The room was tastefully decorated complete with creaky floors and original stone windows (double glazing has been put in but at least you can still see the original features). The hotel has some fascinating history and alledgedly its own ghost - which thankfully decided to leave my husband and I in peace! The hotel is ideally located at the top of the town and bars and restuarants are only a short walk away, the main shopping area is only a 10 min walk. Special thanks to Liam who checked us in, he was very helpful and friendly - a credit to the hotel.

We stayed for two nights with a TravelZoo offer. Very warm welcome from the reception staff and we were given a choice of rooms in the old or new part of the building. We chose the old part and the room was comfortable, clean and of a good size with a large bathroom and with views over the rear garden. The hotel was busy with conferences and business travellers and on the first night hosted a large Rotary Club dinner.
The bar was cosy and barman was friendly and efficient. There was a warming log fire and pleasant aroma of wood smoke.
There was a large choice on the breakfast menu and the food was well cooked and plentiful. Dinner from the seasonal menu was exceptional. It was delicate, well cooked and delicious.
We had a very enjoyable stay but we must make a special mention of the staff, especially the service staff at dinner and breakfast. They were efficient, friendly, informative and seemed definitely concerned about our comfort and satisfaction.

Room Tip: The old part is very comfortable.

We just stayed for one night but thoroughly enjoyed our short stay. The welcome was warm and friendly and we were even given a choice of a room in the old or the new block. We chose an old room and it was utterly charming - even the staircase was worth a photo! We had a large room with a very good sized vbathroom and a view of the garden. Breakfast was very good with a wide choice at a table overlooking the garden. The situation was ideal and when it was time to leave the receptionist not only booked a taxi for us but printed off a history of the building whilst we waited. We certainly consider using the hotel again.

Room Tip: Go for an older room - it is an old building so a shame to stay in a modern block.

A very dated hotel but that was part of it's charm to us, far better than staying in some of the sterile hotels that we've experienced over the years.

Our room was very clean and overlooked the back gardens. I have to say that the plumbing to the hot water tap in the bathroom was certainly a challenge, with pulsing gushes of water rather than a steady stream (room 50).

The bar area was very very quiet and it seems you need to telephone reception who will arrange for someone to come and serve you.

Breakfast was fine with a wide range of hot & cold choices (although I wouldn't have minded some pinapple).

Location is spot on, very close to the 'Cross' and main shopping streets..

If we find ourselves in the area again we'll be back.

I note your comments regarding the service at the bar and will look at this along with the fruit choice at breakfast.

Stayed during a business trip. Was comfortable enough but the room did feel a little claustrophobic. Toiletries were decent but the bathroom was painfully small, using the loo if you are of the tall persuasion would pretty much be impossible.

Dear Guest,

First of all i would like to thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at our hotel.

I would like to apologise that our hotel did not meet your expectations that you would usually expect from a hotel, being a 17th century building we do have very different styles, shapes and sizes of bedrooms. Im sure if you spoke to the Front Office Team they would of gladly assisted in seeing if their was a room more spacious to your liking available.

I hope this stay hasnt put you off staying in the Whately Hall Hotel,

Thank youonce again,

Kind Regards
