“Quiet break”
Reviewed April 2, 2013 via mobile

My partner and I stayed here for the weekend on a KGB deal. It was my birthday so we grabbed the opportunity to spend some quality time together.

The hotel is quite small with lots of stairs and corridors. It was also quite cold with the radiator in the room not letting off much heat. The bar closed quite early (9pm) for a Friday night.

The staff were helpful and friendly which really made this an enjoyable break. The hotel is situated a short walk away from the town centre and another shopping outlet is a short drive away.

I probably wouldn't come back to Banbury again but if I was to, I would stay here.

Husband booked us in here for a couple of nights last week after the disaster that is the Lismore Hotel almost next door. What a welcome relief to a) sleep in a king size bed with fat pillows and crisp linens; and b) have a bath so deep I didn't want to get out (and the complimentary bubbles smelt just like Badedas!)

The hotel is decorated to an extremely high standard, the staff were absolutely charming and attentive, and breaking our own rule of not eating dinner in hotels, I can safely report the food was superb.

One little niggle was at breakfast on the first morning our hot food arrived before we had finished our fruit and the fruit bowls were promptly whisked away which I found a little unsettling - easily remedied on the second morning by simply telling the waiter that we would order our cooked part in a minute or two. Problem solved. Brekkie was fabulous; coffee not too strong or "stewed", a quality sausage (!) and Husbands request for smoked haddock with poach eggs was served perfectly.

I would not hesitate to stay here again if I return to Banbury. Worth the extra couple of quid NOT to stay at the Lismore down the road!

Stayed here for 2 nights on a KGB deal. Good value. Good location for visiting Oxford, Cotswolds and several NT houses.
Room was a good size, warm and comfortable.
TV and wifi, though free were not good.
Bathroom, bed and shower good.
However, it is a very old building and has many stairs taking you in different directions if you are towards the back/ side of this extended building. No lift so it can be a trek to your room, though staff will assist with luggage if you want.
Beware Rm 144 must be near some extractor fan or something...there is a constant hum and despite being assured by reception that the night porter ensures fans from the kitchen etc are turned off at night ....this is not the case or it makes no difference. If you're not a sound sleeper consider ear plugs. Other than this noise the hotel was relatively quiet despite 2 coach parties arriving on our second day. The staff coped well with this influx.

The hotel is in a good position close to town, it is in good condition, has convenient parking at the rear, the bed and shower where great, the TV (4 channels) was small and fuzzy and the staff were very polite and (with one exception) very helpful.
Be aware that there is no lift and most rooms which are not on the ground floor are reached by the main stairs then a series of a few stairs up and a few stairs down as the hotel is on several levels.
Don't accept room 144 as, whilst it is a lovely large room etc., it has a background hum all day and ALL NIGHT! We asked at reception about it and the lady said it was the extractor fan from the kitchen (don't know if this is true) but said it is turned off at night. We told her it wasn't last night - she took some convincing and said the night porter always turned it off, then promised to get the night porter to turn it off that night - the hum went on all the next night!!
Breakfast is very good and the evening meal was ok.

Room Tip: Don't accept room 144 (or anything in that area) as, whilst it is a lovely large room etc., it h...

We stayed here for 2 nights - but were not happy. There was no lift that we found and the corridors to the rooms were long and distorted with frequent intermediate steps and fire doors. We were offered a room to the front where the traffic noise would have kept us up all night. We changed for the rear and poor view over the parking and back streets of Banbury. The room was clean but the rooms, breakfast room and whole interior was so bland and uninteresting - cream and chocolate brown. We made the mistake of having dinner in - steak and salmon - as bland as the hotel decor. At £50 plus for a 2 course dinner and glass of wine I found this way overpriced for the quality - although the service was excellent. And breakfast - fine but for a 20 minute wait for the bacon and eggs. And perhaps the foreign staff couldn't muster up enough English for an apology? But the key was perhaps seen at reception and their attitude to us. Curt, abrupt treatment where their interest seemed more concentrated on the immediate credit card pre-payment rather than treating us as valued guests. We would not recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: If you want to listen to the high street traffic all night choose a front room. Preferably choose a...

We had an amazing experience! We had our wedding reception here on Saturday and we had a really lovely time. The planning process right through to the reception itself was excellently organised and due to this we had a stress free wedding day. The staff were attentive and supportive and the wedding breakfast and buffet in the evening were delicious and came in and out in record time. We can not recommend this hotel enough!
