Owner description: A moated fortified manor house, about 2 miles west of Banbury. Built in 1300 and then later added to in 1550, the Castle had strong links with the Parliamentary side in the English Civil War (1642-51). Still a family home, Broughton Castle is lived in by Lord & Lady Saye & Sele of the Fiennes family. Beautiful formal garden and park, particularly during the summer months. Public open days will resume from the beginning of April 2017 (2pm - 5pm Wednesdays and Sundays). We are open for group tours at any time of the year by appointment. We have a recently refurbished tea room offering light lunches and delicious afternoon teas,

We visited Broughton Castle at the weekend and were delighted with the beauty of the setting and the house itself. It is still a residence and lacks the museum feel of some places. We had tea and a nice cake, got our chairs out of the car boot and sat and read happily in the sunshine looking at the beautiful scene in front of us. If you're in the area make sure you visit you'll be pleased you did!

Lovely family owned Castle, the best moat you'll find. Lovely Gardens, this is a hidden gem in North Oxfordshire but only 2 miles from Banbury.

Broughton Castle is a gem - and not a William Morris curtain in sight. The beauty of this attraction lies in its rejection of the grand gesture and expectations and commitment to providing visitors with an authentic experience. The building is attractive, inside and out. I appreciated what might seen as austere: the architecture stands proudly, the moat, lawns and garden the only romantic imagery. Inside, the building can be toured from the hall on the ground floor, to the roof, providing a whole experience rather than one marred by lack of access to examples of a family's living space. Booklets and placards providing information are placed on tables in each room. However, I would have liked more specific information placed with the particular items. This 'flaw' is partially overcome by the pleasant guides who are present in each room. They are ready to inform but also give everyone the opportunity to enjoy quietly. There is plenty of parking and a good tea shop.

Broughton Castle is perfection materialized. The size of the castle and its history and current incarnation are ubiquitously "English"--not overpowering nor blingly, dazzlingly "grand"--just perfectly proportioned, quietly important and in a perfect setting !! For an excellent understanding of the context of Broughton Castle within the history of England, one should read Ranulph Fiennes' book about this family and their castle. (I can't remember now it's exact title, but it is something like "An Expedition to my Family").

Lady Saye and Sele is a genius gardener also, and the borders and gardens of Broughton Castle are as perfect as is Broughton Castle itself and one can lose oneself for hours just sitting there on a bench surrounded by such beauty.

To be sure, there are grander castles in the UK, but none are as perfect, nor "perfectly English" as is this one!!
