The most beautiful gardens in any of the National Trust properties we have been to.!! with a lovely surprise too.
A great place to take a picnic and just sit admiring the views.
A good plant sales area and resteraunt with plenty of good parking.
The house looks better from outside as it is quite modern being a 20/30s building....I do recommend it for the surprise gardens.

Walter Bearsted was wealthy beyond any normal dreams from his family having built up the oil company shell. This house is a magnificent testament to his and his wife's dreams. The house is many things such as a canvas for art deco. It contains a magnificent collection of paintings, ever wanted to see a Rembrandt or Canaleto they are here. The porcelain collection is extensive too.
The gardens are very large well laid out and a tranquil idyll for an hour or so stroll.
Woodland walk also worth a go.
Parking easy.
Tea - room OK but pretty plain vanilla compared to some of the competition.
Worth a visit if you have 3 or so hours to spare.
Would have got a 5 but let down by the tea room

We arrived just after midday at the restaurant. My soup was barely warm. I avoided a main hot dish because, although the food looked good, the service was amazingly slow. It's astonishing how long it took the server to cut out a piece of meat pie, for example.
Elsewhere the volunteers especially in the shop and art gallery, the staff made too much noise talking to each other.
Excellent flower beds and lake.

We had not heard of this before but were delighted to find a charming house with a good art collection (mostly 'workshop of' or 'attributed to' Old Masters) and a truly wonderful huge garden with spaces from a landscaped bog to a very architectural pool to lush flower borders. Visitors should be warned that the landscaping is on a rather steep slope, so there are lots of sloping paths and steps to traverse.

Interesting stately home and art collection with stunning gardens and grounds. Hear the café is very good too.
