The best home cooked Pakistani curry in Banbury. The food is always superbly cooked and the service is excellent. In 16 years I have not had a bad mealhere. The staff are delightful too. You know that it is good when you see Pakistani Kashmiris eating there!

When you find somewhere this good, it is worth writing about. We had become somewhat disappointed with the curry houses we had sampled in the Banbury area, and went online to search for somewhere new. The Sheesh Mahal caught our eye because they had just won the runner-up prize in the English Curry Awards 2013. It had to be worth a try! My partner and I were delighted to find that the Sheesh Mahal cooks in the traditional way using ancient recipes - the food is delicious! We are now visiting this restaurant nearly every week, since we discovered it in early September. None of this feeling of pre-catered food delivered to the premises and reheated. The food tastes freshly cooked on the premises and you see and taste the difference - the starters and main dishes never disappoint - madras, korma, passanda and more. And the best onion bhajis and peshwari naan we have ever tasted. As my partner said, it is worth going there for the peshwari naan alone. It should be noted that the food tends to be spicier and it is worth consulting about the milder dishes such as the korma which is full of flavour, but mild. The food is genuinely good value, particularly on a Tuesday night when you get a starter, main course, rice and side dish all for £9.99 per head. The service is friendly and relaxed in a Georgian townhouse setting. So, if you are looking for trendy, run-of-the-mill, microwave-in-a-bag Indian food, this is not the restaurant for you.

We called in here "early doors" last Friday on our way back home to Yorkshire from Portsmouth after a ferry trip from Spain. After seeing the state of the traffic on the motorway we decided to just pull off at Banbury and wait until hopefully things had calmed down a bit, and my husband was desperate for a curry after three weeks away without one!

The restaurant was quiet at the time but busy in the take-away side, and a guy outside who was waiting to be served a take-away made it quite clear to us in a loud voice how brilliant the food was there (I did enjoy watching him cycle off with his takeaway bags dangling, wobbling all over the place - he had clearly been "well refreshed" somewhere else earlier!).

The service was friendly and enjoyed a two course meal which was tasty and filling. I outfaced myself a bit by ordering a Peshwari Naan AND an aubergine side dish as well as my main course (thank God I did not go for rice as well!) but it was good food and if we did not live so far away from Banbury we would definitely visit them again.

Service between starter and main was a little slow but they did come and apologise and clearly they were busy on the takeaway side. Also, it's quite good to know that the food is being freshly cooked and not just pinged in a microwave.

Although we were seated at the back of the restaurant and the service between starter and main was a little slow, the food was excellent.

We had Prawn and Mango Puri, Mushroom and Spicy Potato and Shesh Kebab followed by Chicken Pasanda, Achari Chicken and Machani Chicken and all were excellent.

Speed up the service and we will be back

Turned up without booking but we were found a table. Ordered different dishes from previous visits just for a change. Had an old school chicken madras. Food arrived surprisingly quickly while we were still killing the papadoms.
The madras had a good depth of flavour even though fairly spicy. The accompanying okra was good as always.
The only downside was I had to ask for the bill twice but never mind. I will be returning - hopefully soon.
