The Moon and Sixpence impressed us with its name as well as its spacious and pleasant interior. The table and location of it in the dining room were both good and we are always happy to be seated at a large round table which means no-one in the group feels left out on an end! The service was upbeat, welcome, unobtrusive and efficient. There was just enough “gap” between courses for us to feel neither rushed nor that our next course was unduly delayed. Our host was even prepared to offer ideas of other good food pubs for us to visit – obviously not afraid of a bit of local competition!
The food was fresh, colourful and tasty and no-one from our party was dissatisfied with any of their chosen meals (which is unusual for us critics!). All the courses were beautifully presented, especially the desserts. They made no fuss with one guest’s dairy free diet and we liked the small touches too; a complementary bread roll, home-made fudge with the coffee, and the port even came in a proper port glass! One slight reservation would be that we thought the menu choices weren’t overly exciting and vegetarians had a more limited choice of dishes. However, this was outweighed by the fact that we all thought our meal was particularly good value for money compared to some of the other gastro pubs we have visited – the ‘fixed’ menu offered enough choice and being available on a Friday night, which is often not the case, was an added bonus. So, we felt The Moon and Sixpence deserved to be given the top, 5 star rating that we have awarded.
