Owner description: Ancestral home of George Washington?s family is a fine example of a manor house and garden at the time of Shakespeare.

What a really interesting place. Very pleasant gardens and grounds to enjoy but the highlight of our visit was the tour of the house and the history lesson imparted by the very enthusiastic and knowledge guide. Well worth a visit - we will certainly return in the future.

George Washington's birthplace is worth a visit if you are in the area because of the ability to look round part of a lovely old house and garden. The staff are helpful and enthusiastic, but I think more geared to school visits. There are quite a lot of stairs so would be limited for the less able.

I should say first that the manor operates a guided tour of the house, rather than letting you view freely; however this really made the whole visit totally worthwhile.

I was prepared for a stuffy guide around, but instead had an insightful view back through the roots of the Washington family, a detailed picture of family life and lots of other historical information to really bring it all together.

It was great that the history given went back to the roots of the family and the Manor itself. The tour really helped highlight some of the great items into the house (including many everyday or unusual items) and put everything into context.

The guide was excellent and made sure to include the younger members of the group to keep them interested. I especially liked many of the additional historical background snippets ... such as terminology related to 'the board' and 'turning the tables'.

Photography is allowed in the manor.

Renowned as George Washington's birth place, it has little else to commend it. Essentially a moderately large vernacular house, with some, but few, interesting features. Mostly of interest to American tourists.
