What a beautiful and fantastic venue. No fault can be found if you want a relaxing, homely and comforting place in a great area. If you want really posh, room service and non friendly then this farm may not suit you.
The house has 6 various sized bedrooms, a nice family friendly sized kitchen/dining area and family lounge.
The only negative point is that we had to leave to go home. Highly recommended.
Myself, partner and two children stayed here last month and we could not recommend it enough. Beautiful stay, great local attractions, helpful staff.
We stayed here in April for a week's exclusive rental for my 50th birthday. The delay in writing this review is due to me patiently waiting for a helpful response from the owner/management company for the multiple issues we had. It is still not happening.
Where to start? Other reviewers this year have said most of it - electricity tripping, boilers not working, pool freezing cold, general state of disrepair which was bordering on dangerous for small children (chairs collapsing, wires protruding, junk in the garden).
I was told (in the one email of reply) that these issues had been rectified, but I can see from other people that many of them have not.
The state of repair would in itself, have made me grade it as 3/5 as the setting is beautiful and the place has so much potential, but on top of everything else, the property was accidentally DOUBLE BOOKED. We arrived 20 minutes after check-in time on the Friday for a week's exclusive rental to find 14 strangers moving into Manor House, with a non-employee having let them in. After nearly 2 hours, said person got hold of a senior manager (owner was unavailable) e-mail evidence was found that their booking was via a third party and therefore less valid than ours, they somewhat understandably refused to move out.
This left 20 of us (including people travelling from Sweden and Germany and Cornwall) sleeping in various arrangements spread between the cottages (e.g. on sofas, strangers thrown in together, kids and dog negotiating difficult staircases), and trying to have a communal meal in a kitchen for 8 people. This was all pretty stressful.
Fortunately, the following morning the other people agreed to move out. I felt sorry for them. The booking system is clearly fundamentally flawed. My guests (including new arrivals) went walking in the Dales for the day, and I stayed with the lovely Josh and his partner to change sheets and towels, move baggage between rooms and clean the Manor House. They were mortified at the mix-up.
We are an upbeat and practical bunch of friends. Many of us work in the NHS. We might have seen the funny side of it and laughed about the first night of my 50th birthday week for years to come had we not 1) then had endless problems all week due to lack of property maintenance 2) had to put up with the freezing pool (children were blue) - when you book this kind of place in April to ensure you have an indoor option for children, and 3) the failure of the owner/management company to resolve my request for some kind of compensation in the 6 months that have now passed. We have had an apology, but not even the one night's costs repaid.
Please also note that the exclusive use rate only seems to apply if you book all the properties in one go. Although I had exclusive use, it took a few weeks for all 28 friends to confirm they could come, and as a result I ended up paying £1300 more than I expected. None of this was clear from their complicated and opaque system of payment. I only found out by working it out on a calculator when it was too late.
Do not stay here. They do not deserve your trade.
We booked the whole property for a weekend, as there were 26 of us, apart from the weather, which no one can control, we had a fab weekend, the place was warm and welcoming, our dogs behaved themselves, as did our children, the views were beautiful.
The rooms were clean and tidy. Ive read some of the reviews, the plumbing is a little noisy, but it’s an old property and that is to be expected with the amount of bathrooms.
The children spent quite a bit of time using the games room and swimming pool and they loved it.
Unfortunately we were unable to locate a broom, or dustpan and brush, these should be available. Apart from that, we had no issues.
A throughly enjoyable weekend.
The house is set in a beautiful area, fantastic views, and has great potential. But please don't advertise a "log burning stove" and then label it with instructions not to use it! Bits missing off bathroom taps, top bathroom has no towel rail or place to put shower gel etc. Not to mention the terrible noise the plumbing makes - solved by turning the cold tap on! Under unit lights in the kitchen really dirty but don't work anyway. Grubby furniture in the lounge.. As for the oven - black smoke belching out! The cleaner came in to deal with it and perfunctorily wiped it over. No better at all. Great pity as reviews in 2015 state that the house was spotlessly clean. Now it needs a thorough deep clean and some tlc with the dubious wiring sorted.
It's hard to know where to start, but let's go with rats! Night after night they clomped their way across the bedroom ceilings, disturbing our sleep. When I tried to contact someone, anyone, about this, I was met by a wall of silence. Never has our family stayed in such disappointing surroundings. 4* accomodation it is NOT. 1980s youth hostel, maybe. It was dirty, shoddy and very ill equipped. no tin opener, no toaster and a pair of someone else's pants in one of the cupboards. the list goes on and on.
As with other reviews, making contact with Hillmotts fitness, or leisure or finance, was nigh on impossible. Customer care, zero. PLEASE, PLEASE don't go there. It's a disgrace to the gorgeous Peak District.
Just back from a 4 night stay in the Manor House and although the house is large, warm and comfortable..it is not a luxury house.
10 of us were there for a family break and enjoyed ourselves as the kitchen was large, the living area was roomy and the kids loved the pool....there is plenty of room for more people. There is a games room but it is a bit tired and in need of tidying and refreshing.
Even considering the age of the property it is a bit neglected and has not been cleaned properly. We found cooked food in a very dirty cooker, mouse droppings in the cupboard under the sink (I realise it is in a rural area but you would think that the cleaner would have swept this away whilst cleaning before our arrival!), toothpaste on the sink, a lack of washing up bowl (but no plug..) etc etc...all signs of a lack of interest/ attention.
For a large house you would expect a large dining room....we ate our evening meals in the kitchen after the kids had had theirs..but if we all wanted to eat together then the only area was a dining area in the "conservatory" which is a little basic, cold and a bit grubby.
As the house has an AGA (as well as a dirty normal cooker) then it would be helpful if there was some info in the welcome folder with some instructions on how to cook in it - the welcome folder lacked a lot of information, especially basic info such as which of the 3 bins is for recycling, general rubbish etc....(none of the bins had any labels...).
During the stay I did email the owners with feedback and issues...and all I got back was a mail basically saying thanks..and nothing else! A sign that they are not interested in improving things for future customers.
Basically, if you want a comfortable large house, in a great rural location and are happy to do a bit of cleaning yourself then this house is ok...but if you are expecting a high quality, luxury house then you will be disappointed.
