Lovely cosy little corner of town. Nice selection of wines, beers and ciders and amazing cheese and tapas boards!

I can remember Jules setting up in a tiny boutique cafe not too many years ago, how much has changed in those few years. The Old Courthouse has evolved into the place to take coffee by day or fine wine by night. Forever busy with a fantastic atmosphere two things are guaranteed… You will leave happy and you will leave drunk.

Julian is a real peoples person and this is evident in the way he manages every aspect of his venue. He also has the benefit of years of travel and has seen the good the bad the ugly and the exceptional of the catering world - he's taken the exceptional on board and serves it with effortless ease here.

Absolutely amazing gem. I visited with my partner, and we ordered a double platter. We struggled to eat it all, but the very kind manager wrapped our leftovers up for us to take back with us!! Lovely atmosphere, and the staff are superb and incredibly helpful too! We shall definitely be returning!

Giving up on somewhere to have dinner in a tired town full of charity shops, we cut down a back street to return to the hotel... and came across this excellent find. We aked if they had availability and they confirmed, although the table would need to be vacated by 1845 (we arrived 1730), and we agreed that would be fine.

The menu covered the French classics from cuisses de grenouilles to coq au vin. Reviewing the wine list for a suitable bottle, the waiter recommended we try the house red at half the price. We did, and he was right - it was excellent value for money. I easily decided on coquille St. Jacques to start and could not decide between boeuf bourguignon or confit de canard. Asking the waiter he instantly suggested that whilst the beef was excellent, the duck was even better. My partner opted for the coq au vin, with his first experience of frogs' legs to start.

The food was excellent - no improvements to recommend. The service was perfectly timed and unobtrusively attentive.

Now very full, we opted for a cheese board to finish off the evening. Unsure whether to share or have one each, the waiter recommended sharing as they were of a good size. We moved to the bar area to free up the table for the next booking and enjoyed an IMMENSE cheeseboard with a glass of port each. This has to be the best cheeseboard we have eaten - great variety and flavour.

Expecting a bill around £100 for the 3 courses, wine and port we were shocked at a total cost of £64 (exc. service).

Highly recommended if you are ever in Buxton, or even for a romantic night out on the train from Manchester.

Whilst staying in Buxton for the weekend we were looking for somewhere for Sunday lunch and this place sounded perfect. We were a party of six and we shared three platters of meat & cheese between us and we found it to be excellent . We got a selection of cold meats and cheeses with chutney, olives and warm rosemary bread. As we were lucky to get a nice sunny afternoon we sat outdoors. The management and staff were very helpful. We would definitely return if we visit Buxton again.
