“Good value weekend break for families”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014

I stayed at Ravenstor with my two children, 16 and 13, over Feb 2014 half term. The staff were extremely friendly and the hostel was an excellent location. The meals were average, but hearty and warming. The self catering kitchen was very small and did get a bit busy in the morning, could do with some money being spent to enlarge this area. The bedrooms were comfortable but a little tired. All in all, good value, but the building needed a little love and attention.

The location is fabulous for walking, cycling the Monsal Trail and sightseeing. The hostel has a nice atmosphere with cosy lounge and log fire. The staff, as at all YHA hostels were very friendly and helpful. Rooms are basic, but you don't go to YHA to spend time in your room. The only downside was the self-catering kitchen which is well-enough kitted out but impossibly cramped and has an awkward layout.

I stayed at Ravenstor from 24th-26th January. The facilities were good, including drying room for wet walking gear and a place for muddy walking boots. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food was very good. Highly recommended.

I was staying with a large group of friends for a weekend of walking and chatting. The staff at the hostel made us very welcome and provided an atmosphere more akin to a large family house, with two large coal fires kept ablaze all evening and a fine selection of bottled beers available. The rooms were warm, clean and simple with nice bedding, not the damp dubious sort I have experienced from time to time in other hostels. We chose to have breakfast and evening meals at the hostel and the cooking was just right - homely, tasty and honest. The only change I would make would be in the choice of coffee at breakfast, but I am admittedly somewhat fussy in that department, and the adjoining self-catering kitchen has full facilities for anyone wishing to do things their way (including cafetieres!)

The setting of the hostel is wonderfully remote, with two long driveways placing it well back from the nearest road. The main view extends over the Wye valley and footpaths lead from the hostel directly down to the river where footbridges allow access up the opposite bank onto the Monsal Trail. The grounds around the hostel are apt for playing games outside and those seeking solitude would easily find it amongst the wooded areas.

On the final day, I was keen to fuel up at lunch for a 50 mile bike ride home. The staff were particularly accommodating and one of them (Chloe) found me a portion of chicken curry from the freezer and a cup of rice for a very modest fee.

I would certainly stay here again.

A great place to head to for a special occasion. A warm and friendly welcome from all the staff, warm, comfortable rooms and a hearty breakfast to set us up for a day outdoors.
Some great walks from the door. Only niggle was wifi - hence why everyone sits on the steps!

Thank you for your review Rachel, and I understand your frustration with the Wifi in the building, I will look into getting the signal boosted so it reaches further around the building and penetrates some of the thick walls. Im pleased the rest of your stay was enjoyable and I hope you return to visit us again in the near future.

The hostel was immaculate with warm rooms, showers and welcome.
A good choice of meals, beers, wines and two glowing coal fires were on offer. Yha staff were very friendly and helpful. Ravenstor is a superb weekend getaway. We stayed in a very reasonably priced four bedded room and woke to a beautiful view, sunrise. Lovely gardens, scenery, walks and cycling are all on the doorstep. Monsal Trail through Millers Dale was our choice for a winter's walk and the views back from Monsal Head were breathtaking.
The only downside was I'd only booked one night, but to quote a famous line .... "I'll be back"

Kids wanted to go back to their favorite place - we hadn't been here for 11 years so booked last two nights of 2013. Rooms were fine, and no longer had to use a sleeping bag liner - proper sheet, quilt and an excellent mattress; one room had double bed. Hot breakfast buffet was excellent, plenty of good, freshly cooked food for £5. After walking for a day in the damp it was nice to have a hot shower and sit in front of a large hot coal fire in one of the large lounges. We had the New Year's Eve meal - very good value, as was the wine. They have a good range of beers and wine these days.
Wonderful walking and cycling - the tunnels on the Monsal trail are now open. Wonderful Victorian house. The staff are the third component, all were always ready to help, friendly and alert to what is going on around them. Overall a great place to stay and get away from it all.
