5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2014

We stayed Friday 17th to Sunday the 19th as a party of eight. The rooms were really comfortable! Bathroom had excellent facilities. Food was fabulous (we stayed half board and it was well worth it!). Staff couldn't do enough for you. Thank you for a wonderful weekend would definitely visit again

The Old Hall hotel is right in the middle of Buxton and therefore ideally situated for exploring and enjoying the town and its attractions. The hotel itself is old and full of character and the staff very friendly and welcoming. The room was a good size and very comfortable with clean and bright en-suite. Breakfast the following day was outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will likely come again.

We chose The Old Hall in Buxton as a convenient place for a group of friends to "meet in the middle", we were all instantly charmed by this cosy, comfortable, classy hotel.

Our rooms were lovely, clean, tastefully furnished (no sign of the "tired decor" mentioned by other reviewers in fact the first thing we noticed when we walked in was the depth and bounciness of the carpets!) and equipped with everything we needed, from comfy beds to a proper teapot to make morning tea.

We didn't eat here but had drinks in the wine bar prior to going out - Buxton has lots to offer with an Opera House and several great restaurants within a very short walk from the hotel - although we will try the Old Hall next time we stay as the menu looked very tempting and the drinks were reasonably priced - staff could not have been more friendly and helpful.

Breakfast the next morning was a highlight - orders taken at the table for a very high quality cooked breakfast - perfect start to the day.

We didn't experience any of the noise that others warned about, we stayed on a busy Friday evening when the hotel was busy and although Buxton seems to be a bustling town, the traffic noise was minimal.

We'll definitely be back and would recommend others to give it a go!

Room Tip: Probably because of the age of the building, room sizes vary so if you like a lot of space it's...

Good points:
Excellent centre of town location
Very friendly staff
Excellent breakfast
Decent sized room, well furnished

Not so good points:
Very small en-suite
Room cleaners started work around 7.30am and made a fair bit of noise right outside our bedroom. We were on holiday and wanted a lie-in. No chance.
Duvets were hollow-fibre and it was therefore too warm in bed.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on Trip Advisor. I would like to thank you for your positive comments about the staff and our award winning breakfast. I have spoken to the housekeepers about the noise in the morning and we have agreed for work on the bedrooms to start after 9am. This will prevent any issue with noise in the future. I hope you choose to visit our hotel again.

Getting into the hotel with a wheelie suitcase is not easy due to the tiny revolving door and the reception window was created with dwarfs in mind. The room had very dark decor and noise could be heard from downstairs until quite late. There appeared to be quite a bit of visible dust. On the plus, food was great and bar staff were very accommodating.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on Trip Advisor. Our revolving doors at the front of the hotel can be opened by a member of staff at guests requests very easily. Thank you for your comments about the rooms. Our hotel is constantly undergoing refurbishment and I have spoken to the housekeepers about ensuring all rooms are at a high standard of cleanliness. We hope that you choose our hotel once again.

This is a wonderful old style hotel. From the wooden revolving door to the very quirky lift, one you used to find in high class shops of the past with manual folding door, took me back. The hotel is steeped in history, especially Tudor history, with a panel of writing on the glass pane as you enter the front door, some found to be of Mary Queen of Scots. I stayed over night for a celebration, four of us. The room was very comfortable, the bed very much so, slept very well. I asked for an extra couple of pillows and they came at once. Bathroom spotless, and a good range of complimentary cosmetics. Tons of hot water for a very good shower. There are several Residents Lounges, very comfortable, wooden panelled and cosy. The furniture is a little worn at the edges, but for me this added to the atmosphere. Plenty of tourist leaflets informing you where to go and what to see in and around Buxton. The hotel is about 2 minutes walk from the Opera House and about 5-10 minutes walk from the town centre/station. We had dinner in the Restaurant and it was a quiet night, only 2 couples and us in there, this may have caused the lack of atmosphere, it was a Thursday night too. There was a good menu to chose from, the food was good in quality, it just lacked a something. Breakfast is excellent. A buffet of fruits, yoghurt, cereals and pastries. Then a cooked chose from "The Kitchen" from porridge to kippers, salmon with scrambled egg, or if you prefer the Full English (vegetarian option good too) and served by a lovely waitress, a very calm and sedate start to the morning. There is no parking, but you can park in the spaces right outside the hotel for £3 for 24 hours, tell the Reception and they give you a notice to put in your car along with a parking ticket you can purchase at Reception (they have a parking machine sat on the check in desk) so its all done in one go.

This is a wonderful hotel to stay in, full of old charm, quality food and a good nights rest assured. I would recommend it and we will certainly be returning to the Old Hall Hotel soon.

Other reviewers have accurately listed the many attractions of this hotel: its quirky antiquity (built 1573, extended 1670), old-world charm, friendly staff and fine dining. Our room was comfortable and nicely furnished, with no sign of the tired décor reported by some reviewers. For those interested in Mary Queen of Scots the hotel must be a treasure trove: pictures of her seem to occupy every wall (there are three of her in one bar alone) and in one bedroom you can see the etching on the window which she (allegedly) made with her diamond ring. Interesting, however, to see that The Crescent just down the road (a sort of mini-version of the one in Bath) is being refurbished to create a hotel and spa: I’d guess that in a year or so the Old Hall will have some unwelcome competition to deal with.

Room Tip: An old building so check ceiling heights if you are a "tall traveller".
