“Excellent Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

An excellent location for discovering Buxton and the surrounding area. Located around the corner from the Opera House, being a 5-10 minute walk into the centre and directly opposite Pavillion Gardens.
We stayed in a third floor room, which was very comfortable but a little tired in decor, but this adds to the character of the old building along with the old bathroom suite and sloping floors. Wi-fi was available, but dropped every now and then.
We had a Groupon offer which included a two course evening meal, sparkling wine on arrival and breakfast. The food was simple but cooked very well, we paid extra for dessert. They have an excellent wine list, and the choices at breakfast were extensive.
Staff were very helpful at reception and in the dining room. Discounted parking is available if you go straight to reception. The weekend we stayed there was very heavy snow and we were all digging our cars out of the car park! The reception staff kept us up to date with which roads were open.
If we were in the area again, I would stay but would search for a last minute deal.

This is an old building with the quirky charm that goes with that - so don't expect square walls and floors. It is nonetheless a well appointed hotel in a stunning location opposite the gardens and the Opera House, bang in the middle of the town. We slept well and breakfasts were good. Would certainly reccommend for couples, friends and family.

This is a nice old hotel (the oldest building in Buxton), centrally situated and offering a good mixture of bars, restaurant, and lounges, none of them extortionate. It's a stone's throw from the Opera House and Pavilion Gardens and mid-way between the two main shopping areas. The interior layout is eccentric, with lots of corridors, steps, and sloping floors, and the lift is tiny and ancient. Decent cooked breakfast included in the price. My only complaint is that the wi-fi only works on the ground floor, so no reading emails in bed.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking the kitchen area, which mean early morning noise.

A friend bought us an overnight stay, dinner and breakfast at the Old Hall because she had herself stayed there and thought it was so great. It far exceeded our expectations, right in the heart of Buxton so close to everything that is going on. The food was excellent, served by friendly and efficient staff who were under some stress as they had a wedding party to cater for on the Saturday. Nothing was too much trouble, it was a fabulous weekend. Eve & John Banks of Bulkington.

Room Tip: It is an old and quaint place where all the walls ceilings and even the floors slope so all rooms a...

I have just stayed at the Old Hall with a group of people so I got to look in a few rooms.

The rooms in this hotel are all individually decorated and have their own (sometimes quirky) layout. The hot and powerful shower was fantastic and the bathroom was spacious with nice fluffy white towels and lovely smellies to use. The beds are very clean and very comfortable (although a non feather pillow proved difficult to track down and I am allergic to feather, thankfully one of our group had a synthetic pillow to swap with me). There was a nice tray of tea/coffee and the (free) water was replaced every day.

You have a choice of eating in the wine bar or the a-la-carte, over the weekend we did both. We had the 'Fish and Fizz' special on Friday night, gorgeous! On the Saturday night we are in the a-la-carte and had a special menu, everyone said their food was delicious.

I really liked the basement venue that had some live bands on while we were there, I was pleased to discover that you cannot hear the live music in the hotel.

I also really liked the lounges that you can use, buy your wine at the bar and take it through to a lounge.

When you arrive don't forget that you can ask in reception for special rate pay and display tickets.

Our stay at this hotel was excellent. The room was clean, warm and the furnishing was of very good quality. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and can quite understand why the hotel has a National Award for its breakfasts! All members of the staff were helpful and courteous throughout our stay. Its close proximity to the Buxton Opera House, adjoining gardens, conservatory and leisure centre is great asset to the hotel.I would recommend this hotel without any reservations.
