“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2012

This hotel is in a lovely location opposite the Pavilion Gardens. It is ideal if you are visiting the Opera House. The food is great and they do a very good pre-theatre meal. Spotlessly clean and with an old English charm and great history. Staff are very friendly and service is excellent. We did not stay at the weekend which may be busier as they do a lot of weddings.

Second time here and same experience as three years earlier - nice hotel. Ok so it is a bit tired and cluttered in parts but to me that's part of the attraction here. It is a very old building, full of history and ideally centrally located in this attractive town. I've seen some reviews complaining about prices but that's not my experience. However, I would look for a good rate to stay here. If you do book here then expect a very warm welcome from delightful staff. Food and service generally very good, breakfast can be a little slow if they get busy. Overall a good value hotel.

I booked this hotel at the last minute without doing much research. I can only say it was the worst hotel that we have stayed in. So tired reading all the instructions in the bedroom and awful bathroom.
The room itself was cluttered with furniture ,and had no view at a cost of £135 for the night I really thought it was a rip off. Instructions in the bathroom don't have a shower without putting the shower curtain inside the bath, and a few more about the taps. Bin wasn't emptied from previous guests.
We could smell damp especially on the staircase. It must be updated, shame I didn't see photos of the bathroom before hand I would not have stayed.
On arrival we were asked if we would like some papers for the following morning and then got charged an extra £2.50!
The bar at the back of the hotel had no staff..more instructions..ring for service! Well we did after an ok supper- guess what? No one appeared and when we mentioned this in the "wine bar" the staff just laughed! Don't waste your money on this hotel.
Breakfast was ok- can't see what all the fuss was about!
We stayed the previous night in Liverpool in a lovely hotel (chain H) very nice suite and they didn't charge for papers. No instructions either and much much cheaper for the suite.
The building itself is lovely from the outside but step inside...

Lovely building in a great location for the opera house however the service was poor and charges for car parking were not explained, wedding was being held at the hotel and music could be heard into the early hours! Service at breakfast was poor, in view of all this and price would not stay again.

The hotel is just across the road from the Pavilion Gardens and the Opera House so it was very well located for exploring the town. The room and bathroom were both in good condition and the bed was comfy, although the pillows not so much. The staff were really friendly and helpful and the breakfast was top notch with a great selection both hot and cold. The menu in the wine bar looked like good pub grub, we only went into the bar for a drink but had we got their earlier we would have eaten lunch there.

The location of this hotel and the history of the building are the great attractions here. We occupied the attic flat for our stay which was a good option for our family and we appreciated all being in the same rooms. It was a bit of a struggle with luggage up the narrow stairs though. Also, although there were two bathrooms (which is always well received for a family of 5) the showers were very low and not very comfortable (ie, you had to kneel), Great excuse to have a relaxing bath  though!
Reception staff were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was lovely.
