“The BEST day of our life for our wedding!”
Reviewed September 5, 2011

After booking our wedding here over 18months ago, we had stopped at The Old Hall in February to test the food, accommodation and overall experience out. Nothing has been a let down!
Our wedding day on Saturday was amazing. Thank you especially to Jane who organised everything to a tee. We had no problems with anything, everybody had such a fun, fab day and the organisation and helpfulness of the staff was fabulous. They did me and my husband proud! :-) The food was out of this world and the chip butties went down a treat.
Everything was exceptional, this hotel has a very special place in our hearts and always will have. Thank you millions!!!

Room Tip: Upgrade to a four poster, defo worth it!!!

The Old Hall were absolutely great for our wedding.

The food was fantastic, one guest commented that it was better than a wedding she attended at the Savoy! The staff were very well presented, very attentive and professional at all times. A special Thanks to Vicky and Jane for co-ordinating the day and creating the best wedding ever, not just my words but sentiments felt by tons of our guests.

It honestly was a great day and we are still smiling when we think about it. Prices were very, very reasonable; if you are thinking of getting married in the peak district you will be very impressed if you choose the Old Hall.

We have eaten in the Old Hall a couple of times leading up to the wedding and the food was always lovely then too, with service second to none.

The hotel itself has lots of character and history. Don't expect minimalist, modern stuff, and expect to see period features and furniture. Thats not to say that the rooms aren't well equipped or that there are problems, quite the opposite, the bathrooms are modern, the beds are large and comfortable, but accept that parts of the building are 300 or more years old, which in my opinion only adds to the overall experience.

Honestly, there aren't words to describe how great this place is and how good the staff are, I'd give it 5 stars everyday of the week.

Room Tip: If you want a treat ask for Mary's Bower...

My wife and I visited this hotel for a rare - and child-free - night away. This was to be a quiet and peaceful break to allow us to relax and combine it with a visit to Buxton Opera House. We chose an executive room that was aroun 12% more than the lowest rate offered.

In terms of location for the Opera House, it is hard to beat - even the gentlest stroll will reach the front door in five minutes. The reception area (located some way inside the hotel) was well-organised and had us checked in quickly. The room was very comfortable and had some homely touches: a bottle of the local water, a nice selection of toiletries and plenty of supplies on the tea tray. The bed was comfortable and some there were two comfy easy chairs. It's probably not ideal as a working environment: although the writing desk was fine to do some postcards on, it was too narrow for a laptop and some paperwork. On the whole it was very clean, well cared-for and comfortable.

The bathroom, although not modern, was very clean, had a walk-in shower that dispensed lot of hot water and a bath big enough for two. It was clear that the owners had retained some older parts for aesthetic reasons rather than practical, which fitted into the hotel's look. In any case, it all worked very well.

The hotel bars were a quiet and comfortable place to go rather than lively. Ideal for an aperitif or a post-theatre nightcap, but anyone seeking excitement or a hip vibe should seek elsewhere - and should probably be somewhere other than Buxton in the first place! Breakfast was done well and featured some thoughtful touches, such as serving the coffee in a catetiere (plunger pot.) There was a decent selection on the breakfast menu. My haddock was fine and my companion's vegetarian breakfast was well received.

History is big in this hotel - Mary Queen of Scots is mentioned frequently and even the letter ordering the lift (dated 1938) is proudly displayed in the suitably antique elevator. As such it's not a building that works wholly in right angles and some of the doors required even someone of my modest height (around 6' / 183cm) to duck on occasions. This all adds to the charm if you like that sort of thing, but it does offer challenges if you have specific accessibility issues.

All in all, this is a comfortable, quiet hotel ideally placed to enjoy the quiet, gentle pleasures of Buxton and the Opera House,

We had room 10 which had been recently refurbished. The room was large and had a great view overlooking the lovely Pavilion Gardens. The hotel is old fashioned in its decor but very comfortable. Staff were friendly and offered excellent service.

Room Tip: ask for a refurbished room

The Old Hall Hotel, Buxton, offers an excellent pre/post theatre dinner, with splendid table setting, first class menu (real value for money) and first-rate service. We had a discerning party of 5 and we were all full of praise for the quality of the food and service.

The very best thing about this hotel is the staff - they were unfailingly very pleasant and helpful from the moment we arrived. Our room (44) was small but adequate for 1 night, but the bed was only a 4'6" standard double, which is considerably smaller than most hotels these days and as a result, not very comfortable. The position of the hotel is excellent for the Opera House, which was why we chose it, but there were noisy revellers in the street outside until nearly 2 am, who kept us, and lots of other guests, awake.
Our pre-theatre dinner was very good (3 courses for £19) as was breakfast. We felt well looked after. My husband was particularly pleased with the vegetarian full breakfast.
The hotel has lots of character and we would certainly stay here again - probably in a room with a bigger bed.

Room Tip: Rooms vary considerably in size. You get what you pay for.

The History here is fantastic. Mary Queen of Scots stayed on her way to meet her maker.
The rooms were on a slope which was understandable being so old but when having a wash it felt like i was on a boat!!
The position of the place is great right next to the park near the lovely town centre and most importantly for us very close to the opera house.
Yet the double bed was very small and I had an uncomfortable nights sleep.
The breakfast was good but overall I'm glad we stayed to experience the place but one night was enough as i like my comfort too much to stay longer.
