Having little knowledge of the area this hotel was selected almost on a 'pot luck' basis but we left feeling as if we had hit on a real winner. We booked four nights B&B in a 'Junior Suite' and felt it excellent value for money. The accommodation was clean, spacious and comfortable with all furniture and fittings in very good condition. The rest of the hotel was very much the same and at the opposite end of the furnishing/decor spectrum to many more recent hotels which have bare minimalist surroundings. To add to all of this the hotel has extremely attractive gardens which enhance the views from the conservatory style dining room. I must also commend the staff, every one of whom was pleasant, cheerful and helpful. I can sympathise with critical guests who are used to full buffet style breakfasts and who would prefer this to having the cooked element waiter served. I can only comment that we found the breakfasts most acceptable; this view possibly coloured by the availability of items such as green figs, smoked haddock and kippers which are favourites and not always found even in pricier hotels than this.
There were a few minus points but these did not detract from our enjoyment. These included rather slow service at dinner on the first night. That, in addition to a fairly limited menu led us to eat out on other evenings. In addition, the bar was not permanently manned after dinner, occasionally involving a search for a member of staff. Finally, I reported a slow draining bathroom sink on the first morning of our stay. Three days later it did not seem to be attended to as emptying time could still be measured in minutes on our last morning.
Regardless of these quibbles we would certainly stay at the Lee Wood again.
