We Stayed here over the easter weekend, This is a lovely hotel with a real historic feel to it. Now owned by the Barcelo group. We upgraded to a Premium room with views of the gardens and the Derbyshire countyside, the room was spacious and clean, but quite basic in places, it had a tired look to it, creaking floor boards and knocking pipes throughout the night from the central heating, the wall paper was starting to peel off in places, the bathroom was in serious need of a refurbishment, shower head was dirtry as was the bath which was stained and looked like something you would have used in the 80's! cracks were also visible in the plaster.
The Pool area & steam room was dull & smelly and again in need of refurbishment, Nothing like the picture on the website or that advertised at the front of the hotel as you drive past. Dinner was included in our tariff on the first night, good quality and well presented, but if you have a big appetite like myself you may still be hungry after your meal as the quantities were small, the restaurant also charges a supplement for selected dishes off the menu that are not part of the inclusive meal plan, ie Prawn cocktail/ Sea Bass/Steak, thus leaving a limited choice if you do not want to pay any extra, ie Griilled Pollock, Lamb & Mint Sausages & Mash served with pea puree!( a posh name for mushy peas!) Service was slow in the restaurant and we were kept waiting about 30 minutes between courses, sometimes having to prompt the waiters for service! The same goes for breakfast.
Breakfast was good with a wide Buffet selection available.
Being part of the well known Barcelo Groupl i would have expected high standards throughout the hotel, but all Barcelo seem to have done is put up a few signs and stickers. The public areas are grand and clean but the leisure club and rooms seriously need updating. I would go back but only once it has been refurbished. Parking is advertised at being £3.50 per day, but on check out was told "it does'nt matter!" not sure if they are changing this to free parking for hotel guests! which you would expect in the first instance.
