“In Need of Refurbishment. Sadly not a 4*”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2009

We Stayed here over the easter weekend, This is a lovely hotel with a real historic feel to it. Now owned by the Barcelo group. We upgraded to a Premium room with views of the gardens and the Derbyshire countyside, the room was spacious and clean, but quite basic in places, it had a tired look to it, creaking floor boards and knocking pipes throughout the night from the central heating, the wall paper was starting to peel off in places, the bathroom was in serious need of a refurbishment, shower head was dirtry as was the bath which was stained and looked like something you would have used in the 80's! cracks were also visible in the plaster.
The Pool area & steam room was dull & smelly and again in need of refurbishment, Nothing like the picture on the website or that advertised at the front of the hotel as you drive past. Dinner was included in our tariff on the first night, good quality and well presented, but if you have a big appetite like myself you may still be hungry after your meal as the quantities were small, the restaurant also charges a supplement for selected dishes off the menu that are not part of the inclusive meal plan, ie Prawn cocktail/ Sea Bass/Steak, thus leaving a limited choice if you do not want to pay any extra, ie Griilled Pollock, Lamb & Mint Sausages & Mash served with pea puree!( a posh name for mushy peas!) Service was slow in the restaurant and we were kept waiting about 30 minutes between courses, sometimes having to prompt the waiters for service! The same goes for breakfast.
Breakfast was good with a wide Buffet selection available.
Being part of the well known Barcelo Groupl i would have expected high standards throughout the hotel, but all Barcelo seem to have done is put up a few signs and stickers. The public areas are grand and clean but the leisure club and rooms seriously need updating. I would go back but only once it has been refurbished. Parking is advertised at being £3.50 per day, but on check out was told "it does'nt matter!" not sure if they are changing this to free parking for hotel guests! which you would expect in the first instance.

The building is slightly fading but grand. It's in the perfect location for restaurants and shops. The staff are polite but look overworked, and where the service was sometimes lacking - this may be due to lack of staff rather than quality. The pool, sauna and steamroom are excellent and the reason why we chose this hotel. We stayed in a premium room and it was worth the extra cost for the size of the room,

just back from weekend break - frontage & entrance rooms look fine but bedrooms in serious need of a makeover.
upon arrival we were allotted a room to rear of hotel which had not been cleaned from previous occupant, bath & toilet dirty - towels still wet , even TV left on.staff should have been aware of this but obviously were not. room very small, gloomy & shabby looking. we were moved to a room on the 3rd floor which was larger, but still had that outdated feel. decor very tired looking, bathroom had mould on walls, no toilet brush !
also be aware this is a large hotel - catering for wedding receptions etc. - our second night sleep was interrupted by noisy guests returning to their rooms in the early hours .
we also felt it was a bit of an imposition charging for car parking
on a positive note, breakfast very good, staff pleasant & helpful - just a shame about the decor!!

have just returned from a short break at this hotel. Rooms staff etc were all very good but the food was very disappointing. At one meal most of our party found the meat inedible - chef apologised but that was not really good enough - should have brought a doggy bag

on arriving for my wifes 40th birthday treat all looked good in the hallway, reception staff where very helpful. when we got to our first room what a shock it was dark and dingy and looked like it haddened been lived in for ages the springs in
matress where sticking through, and in bathroom there was mould on the walls.on complaining we got another room not much better !needed seriously updating .went swimming at the spa (if you could call it that) again dark and dingy and needs updating. on the up side the food was very good both dinner and breakfast.on checkout we had been charged £3.50 per day for parking ,and also being charged for a bread roll at dinner without being informed i would not recommed this hotel to anyone

I stayed at the hotel with my girlfriend in early March. We had a great stay. The staff were fantastic, they were very helpful and friendly. The hotel itself is very clean and in a very nice area. The food wasn't brilliant but the staff really made our stay worthwhile and we will definately be using the hotel again.

Staff were friendly with good bar facilities. Breakfast was excellent . The hotel had the feel of a reconstructed ballroom or country house. The negatives: rooms and bathrooms were far from modern. Toiliteries were best described as negligible and TV was iffy with idiosyncratic selection of chanells. I ended up watching a documentary on the worst pop songs of all time , which I suppose was a penance of sorts for overdoing it in the bar the night before. My bed was piled up with cushions which were promptly thrown on the floor. I was there for work but impressed with the town of Buxton which I'd imagine is an excellent jumping off point for exploring the peak district.
