This is a grand hotel in desperate need of some tlc , rooms are very comfortable , but the bathrooms could do with a good clean , this would not put me off staying again. Bar is ok and a god area to sit , breakfast was a good standard. Good for business

We have just spent 2 nights at the Palace. This hotel I steeped in the past , vast corridors, space space and space. An amazing relic of the past and it is worth staying here just to soak up the atmosphere . Yes I am a fan of great old English hotels!
As with a lot of these hotels they need some attention and the Palace is no exception. It's decor is tired and sparse in places and the rooms could do with a make over.
The staff are polite and helpful , the breakfast very good and overall we had a great stay.
Enjoy this hotel for what it is.

This was my second visit to this hotel and sadly very disappointing. An fantastic location and impressive lobby, however everything else is rather tired. An unfriendly receptionist 'greeted' us.
A 'family' room with a Youth Hostel feel; king-sized bed base with two single mattress on top of different heights which kept moving apart throughout the night, a bathroom that could benefit from a 'deep clean', hair dryer broken (asked twice for a replacement), room was above either the kitchen or boilers which rumbled all night, carpet taped together with gaffer tape. A new spa hotel is being developed a few hundred yards away and this once grand hotel, will need to pull it's socks up if it's going to compete for custom! Very sad; this could be a fabulous venue. Needs some serious money spending on it.

Room Tip: Request a room at the front of the hotel.

We stayed here as part of our wedding anniversary celebrations . 4 rooms booked with 3 generations staying .

Arrival . As friendly as the reception staff were , and apologetic , the rooms were not ready until about 30 minutes after check-in time . Now , admittedly , not the greatest of hold ups but one that is completely unacceptable .

Rooms . From the sublime to the ridiculous . Of the 4 rooms we had booked 1 was fantastic , 2 average and 1 awful . Our bathroom was of a very poor standard with mould in the corners and a lot of peeling paint and a cracked sink . The windows were absolutely filthy and looked like the outside had not been cleaned for years .

The leisure swimming pool was pleasant enough with a good steam and sauna room . the mens changing room left a lot to be desired though . Not sure if it was in the process of being modernised because the locker area was fine , but the toilet area was shocking with ceiling tiles that looked like they were about to give up on whatever was holing them up .

Breakfast . Buffet breakfast with a decent selection . Not hard to get wrong but the Palace certainly made a good fist of it . Good tables well laid out , good tea and coffee selection . Hot food . Oh dear . Get the tureens topped up ! It is not hard . To be stood waiting like a load of little Oliver Twists with our plates in hand awaiting for some of the buffet to be topped up was farce . And whatever you do do not ask for some croissants unless you have a lot of time on your hands . Get more staff on and have 1 person just topping up the food .

Overall it is not up to scratch for what you pay . Character , yes . Massive upkeep of the place , yes . But that is not what you expect for the money you pay . We all know the groups of hotels that are supposed to be budget options , but the Palace could learn a lot from places like Premier Inn .

Oh and don't get me started on the lift situation .

Room Tip: The rooms in the wings seem to be of a better standard than the main building .

We spent 2 nights (Telegraph offer) at the Palace Hotel and had a very pleasant stay. Having read some of the reviews after my partner had booked it, I did wonder what the hotel was going to be like, as some previous comments were less than attractive. However, we had a comfortable room, clean and every thing we needed. Yes, there was some peeling wall paint in the bathroom, possibly because there wasn't an extractor fan to let the steam out, but it certainly didn't spoil our visit. If you want a modern hotel, with no character, don't book into this place, but we enjoyed it and would visit again. Perhaps only disappointment was having to pay for hotel car park, which seems a bit odd when you have already paid for your stay, meals, etc.

Receptionist excellent, downhill thereafter.
Arrived with time for coffee which was purchased in the bar, asked for a scone as I had been travelling two hours to get there and had not had breakfast, told not until 12 o'clock(why?), so asked for toast. No choice of bread offered but was asked did I want butter OR jam, staff training required I think!. A pot of coffee for two? Again told No, just mugs, which were served two thirds full. A request for hot water was promptly delivered.
Later we discovered coffee was complimentary if we had gone to the Leisure facility.

Three 'mini' treatments were 3 x 30minutes. Staff pleasant enough. Massage good, facial ok and both pedicures very disappointing with nail varnish chipped by evening despite wearing flip flops home.
Didn't use the pool although looked small. Changing facilities need redesigning and modernising. Don,t use the first room as the door opens onto corridor with no modesty protection. Relaxation room has no calming music, friend not given water and none available in the room.
Bought as a pair of vouchers but not given the option of treatments done together as we expected as we would have chatted.

Lunch, soup was good, sandwich ok served with limp salad and no dressing either on already or offered. Request for tap water was served with ice but in beer pint glasses.(staff training again?)

Not the best spa day experience.

Spent last weekend with friends at the Palace Hotel. Faded grandeur it is, that I really don't mind. The hotel has character and great views if you're in one of the bedrooms at the front of the hotel. It all started well. Friendly receptionist and barman. Very welcoming. However, unfriendly maitre d', food very mixed (do avoid salmon fish cakes with dill - basically standard frozen fish cakes with no taste of salmon or dill - dreadful) and a more expensive wine served that hadn't been ordered. After querying the drinks bill, the amount was adjusted but what an unnecessary hassle that you don't need during a weekend away. A disappointing element to what was a lovely get together with friends.

Room Tip: Ask for one at the front of the hotel
