Being positive, the welcome from the staff was good, and it has a great location for the town. However, I think that it is time for the Puma Group to invest some money in this hotel. It has some wonderful features, but it is looking tired. The paintwork needs attention, as does some of the room furniture and the carpets. The lift doors seem to take several attempts to close.
Two things definitely need addressing. First, the hot food at breakfast - it wasn't on either morning. Second, it is terrible that the hotel imposes a £4.50 per night parking charge on its guests. The car park is gate controlled, so it is not as if people could just 'pop in and out' to do their shopping. Effectively, it is an extra tax.
Supposedly a 4* hotel - it is a long way off.

Very pleasant mid week stay at this once grand hotel. Staff were excellent, room large warm and comfy, although hot water took an age to reach us on 3rd floor. A very warm 14 metre pool which was not busy. Reasonable choice on evening menu, but returned slow cooked pork as it was just fat. Breakfast was average, good choice of preserves including my favourite Marmite and self serve toaster was quick and efficient. Buxton was a delightful town.

The room was warm and quiet but very dated. The decor was poor and nothing matched. The bathroom was basic with no extractor fan and the toiletries were sparse and poor quality. There was a notice telling us to close the bathroom door so that the steam didn't set off the fire alarm however the door didn't close properly! On the first evening we weren't able to sit in the hotel bar because of a private function. The breakfast was good although we had to get our own coffee out of a machine. Overall the hotel was poor value for money.

Stayed at this grand hotel for 2 nights, the room had a lovely view over the front of the hotel. But unforunatly it was next to the lift which was having problems so the doors opened and shut at will and rumbled throught the day, so ear plugs were necessary at night, but still felt the vibrations through the pillow. The batheroom would have been a problem if I was any larger as it was very small the the loo in a small space next to the shower. The bed was very comfortable and bedding and towels good quality.
We went to the restuarant for our evening meal which we had booked in advance, but a very limiated menu for a Sunday evening and no prices on the menu and had to ask for the prices but the waitress had to look on the computer for the prices, the same with the wine menu!!The second night we ate in the bar lounge but again had to ask for the menu to be found for the meal deal that was advertised in the lift as a meal and a drink for£ 9.95 which was good value and tasty.
We aslo used the spa, but it was looking a little dated and needed some tlc
Breakfast was good and the staff attentive.

I must admit that after staying at other 4*hotels it was the first time we have been charged £4.50 per night to park when the barriers were up so anyone could drive in and park !!

All in al it was a pleasant stay with a few niggles that could be corrected.

Room Tip: Do not have room 211 noisey tempermental lift right next door. But a lovely view over the front.

Enjoyed a wonderful 3 night stay at the Palace Hotel. Took up the 3 night special offer which included evening dinner on the 1st and 2nd night. On both evenings there was a varied menu selection and we meals were very nice. Breakfasts were excellent, the majority is self service but every taste catered for. We asked if we could have boiled and poached eggs and these were served promptly and at no extra cost. We found all the staff were most attentive and friendly. Requested a room looking out over the front of the hotel and again this seemed no trouble so we had a comfortable room looking out over Buxton. The bedroom could have done with updating but I believe redecorating is in process and obviously with a hotel of this size it can take time. Yes some floors slope slightly but "get over it!" It's an old hotel and uneven floors are all part of the character and history of the place.
Would be happy to return!

Room Tip: Room 210 looks out over the front. Average size, needs a face lift but quite adequate.

Although this hotel is not the most modern it has a lovely old world charm with some fabulous internal architecture and has obviously been very grand in its day. A beautiful central staircase with a very ornate mirrored arch. The rooms are very quaint with fine furniture and very comfortable sleep easy bed.
What really enhances the experience is the hotel team. Everyone I encountered delivered a first class experience, very friendly, a welcoming smile, professional and very efficient culminating in a most pleasant stay.
The breakfast food was good quality, well prepared & presented and very tasty.
I am surprised the reviews are not so much better, overall a very homely hotel.
