“Grand "Old" Hotel”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

Stayed at this grand hotel for 2 nights, the room had a lovely view over the front of the hotel. But unforunatly it was next to the lift which was having problems so the doors opened and shut at will and rumbled throught the day, so ear plugs were necessary at night, but still felt the vibrations through the pillow. The batheroom would have been a problem if I was any larger as it was very small the the loo in a small space next to the shower. The bed was very comfortable and bedding and towels good quality.
We went to the restuarant for our evening meal which we had booked in advance, but a very limiated menu for a Sunday evening and no prices on the menu and had to ask for the prices but the waitress had to look on the computer for the prices, the same with the wine menu!!The second night we ate in the bar lounge but again had to ask for the menu to be found for the meal deal that was advertised in the lift as a meal and a drink for£ 9.95 which was good value and tasty.
We aslo used the spa, but it was looking a little dated and needed some tlc
Breakfast was good and the staff attentive.

I must admit that after staying at other 4*hotels it was the first time we have been charged £4.50 per night to park when the barriers were up so anyone could drive in and park !!

All in al it was a pleasant stay with a few niggles that could be corrected.

Room Tip: Do not have room 211 noisey tempermental lift right next door. But a lovely view over the front.

Enjoyed a wonderful 3 night stay at the Palace Hotel. Took up the 3 night special offer which included evening dinner on the 1st and 2nd night. On both evenings there was a varied menu selection and we meals were very nice. Breakfasts were excellent, the majority is self service but every taste catered for. We asked if we could have boiled and poached eggs and these were served promptly and at no extra cost. We found all the staff were most attentive and friendly. Requested a room looking out over the front of the hotel and again this seemed no trouble so we had a comfortable room looking out over Buxton. The bedroom could have done with updating but I believe redecorating is in process and obviously with a hotel of this size it can take time. Yes some floors slope slightly but "get over it!" It's an old hotel and uneven floors are all part of the character and history of the place.
Would be happy to return!

Room Tip: Room 210 looks out over the front. Average size, needs a face lift but quite adequate.

Although this hotel is not the most modern it has a lovely old world charm with some fabulous internal architecture and has obviously been very grand in its day. A beautiful central staircase with a very ornate mirrored arch. The rooms are very quaint with fine furniture and very comfortable sleep easy bed.
What really enhances the experience is the hotel team. Everyone I encountered delivered a first class experience, very friendly, a welcoming smile, professional and very efficient culminating in a most pleasant stay.
The breakfast food was good quality, well prepared & presented and very tasty.
I am surprised the reviews are not so much better, overall a very homely hotel.

Stayed here with friends following a night at the beautiful Buxton Opera House to see Calender girls (fab show!) - the hotel was wonderful, the staff (in particular William on reception) were friendly and helpful, the rooms although perhaps a little 'tired' were fine for how much we paid, the breakfast was great with enough choice and regularly replenished, the pool area was a bonus although again could perhaps do with some updating, all in all we had a lovely time in great surroundings and will definitely look at staying again!

We stumbled upon The Palace Hotel late one Monday evening after discovering our planned accommodation did not have our reservation. Will was on reception when we arrived to enquire if they had any rooms available for 2 adults and a 3 year old. We were given an excellent rate and were put in one of the suites. The suite was huge with lovely views over Buxton, large master with a separate bedroom for our little boy. There was also a large lounge/dinning room, separate toilet and bathroom. We liked it so much we asked to stay another night.

Breakfast was included in the rate, including full english and continential. We particularly liked the option of different sausages. My husband and son made use of the pool during our stay and I the spa.

All in all a lovely stay and would happily return.

We stayed at the Palace for one night for a visit to the theatre. The hotel is still ok allthough a little tired. The rooms comfortable and the food is as good as ever. Our only real issue is with the theatre starting at 7-30 and the restaurant not opening until no earlier than 6-30,it makes for a rushed and slightly less enjoyable meal.Could the management consider this.
