It was our fourth visit, in as many years, to The Palace at Buxton. The 4 star grand hotel
that overlooks the town. We fell in love with the place during a spa break some years ago
and return to enjoy the "peaceful, tired grandeur" of this impressive building.
(What it must have been like in Victorian times!?)
We were greeted by friendly staff when we checked in. In fact, all the staff (no matter what their job) were always friendly and polite. Our room on the second floor was warm, bright
and airy and was as large as we have come to expect of The Palace. The bathroom totally adequate for our needs.
Adjoining the hotel is a spa and gym which guests can use at no extra expense.
(Fully fitted gym, pool, steam room and sauna.) On our second day we both booked
a 30 minute neck and back deep-tissue massage (£20) in the Beauty Department.
(It's tough and stressful trying to live as an artist in austerity Britain!)
Dinner has always been something to look forward to.
Dressing up in our finery, walking down the chandelier lit grand staircase and hoping
to find ourselves the best dressed diners in the room. (We were on both evenings!)
The three course menu certainly fits the grand surroundings. All credit to the chefs and kitchen staff on the wide range of well-presented and delicious dishes.
But we don't just wallow in grandeur.
We've always enjoyed tea in the Edwardian Tea Rooms above the Hargreaves family
run gift shop down in the town. A short walk from the hotel is the Opera House,
The Gardens (a greenhouse of flowers and exotic plants) and a little further ...The Gallery featuring the talents of Derbyshire Artists. (Sadly we are not local enough to exhibit our own work!)
The Palace Hotel is our ideal escape. A step backward from an unnecessary fast and frenetic world. The only negative is the daily charge for guests to park their cars in the hotel grounds. It should be free!
