“Two artists escape again!”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

It was our fourth visit, in as many years, to The Palace at Buxton. The 4 star grand hotel
that overlooks the town. We fell in love with the place during a spa break some years ago
and return to enjoy the "peaceful, tired grandeur" of this impressive building.
(What it must have been like in Victorian times!?)
We were greeted by friendly staff when we checked in. In fact, all the staff (no matter what their job) were always friendly and polite. Our room on the second floor was warm, bright
and airy and was as large as we have come to expect of The Palace. The bathroom totally adequate for our needs.
Adjoining the hotel is a spa and gym which guests can use at no extra expense.
(Fully fitted gym, pool, steam room and sauna.) On our second day we both booked
a 30 minute neck and back deep-tissue massage (£20) in the Beauty Department.
(It's tough and stressful trying to live as an artist in austerity Britain!)
Dinner has always been something to look forward to.
Dressing up in our finery, walking down the chandelier lit grand staircase and hoping
to find ourselves the best dressed diners in the room. (We were on both evenings!)
The three course menu certainly fits the grand surroundings. All credit to the chefs and kitchen staff on the wide range of well-presented and delicious dishes.
But we don't just wallow in grandeur.
We've always enjoyed tea in the Edwardian Tea Rooms above the Hargreaves family
run gift shop down in the town. A short walk from the hotel is the Opera House,
The Gardens (a greenhouse of flowers and exotic plants) and a little further ...The Gallery featuring the talents of Derbyshire Artists. (Sadly we are not local enough to exhibit our own work!)
The Palace Hotel is our ideal escape. A step backward from an unnecessary fast and frenetic world. The only negative is the daily charge for guests to park their cars in the hotel grounds. It should be free!

Room Tip: Book your spa treatments in advance to ensure that you are not disappointed.

We recently hosted The Military Wives Choir, for a week-end in the beautiful Spa Town of Buxton.
The fifty or so ladies and guests plus my wife and I were accommodated in the equally beautiful Palace Hotel were we all enjoyed the most wonderful week-end. The staff were brilliant and couldn't do enough, the food was excellent, the rooms comfortable and clean.
All the Military Wives were treated to treatment in the Spa and were delighted, no complaints, they had a truly wonderful time.
Having organised such a big event, I was thrilled with the comments I received from everyone about the hotel, we will definitely be back in October 2013 and I have already advised another group visiting Buxton in April to book The Palace which they have now done. I am a person who demands high standards and The Palace Hotel didn't disappoint me in any way.

Room Tip: Ask for a King Size bed and don't be afraid to ask for a change of room should you not be happy...

I stayed at The Palace Hotel for the annual PGA conference.
The hotel is situated in an elevated position overlooking Buxton and is ideally placed for visiting the high peak area of Derbyshire. The Palace is a grand old hotel with high ceilings. I agree that it could do with some refurbishment however that does not detract from the ambiance. The staff are extremely helpful, nothing is ever too much for them Trish, the Duty Manager is one of the most helpful people I have had the pleasure of meeting.
The food is extremely good, the bar is typical of any large hotel, and the service is great.
The rooms are what you would expect in an older hotel, with period furniture. The room I was allocated was clean and well maintained and overlooked the front gardens. If you want to spoil yourself then book one of the four suites, they are huge, with their own living rooms.
The conference facilities are good. It is highly likely that we will be using The Palace for our 2013 conference.

Booked in for a very reasonably priced spa with a friend. The building is spectacular and the decor suitable for this. The guy who booked us in didn't have much conversation but we went to our twin room and were well satisfied with the cleanliness and size. We went down for the evening meal and expected to be given a cheaper version but we were given the same as everyone else and the meal was first rate. The Spa treatments were in a relaxing setting and professionally delivered. All the other staff we came into contact with on reception were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back. Great value for money!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front would have a better view but we were perfectly happy with ours at the back.

Very old and tired. Went there with dog as we have stayed at the Barcelo Hotels who welcome dogs. Barcelo has been taken over by Puma Hotels.

Advertise free Wifi but this stopped at the end of the corridor.

Breakfast is advertised till 10.00 am got there at 9.45 am and it was being cleared away.

Room was very old and windows were full of damp and mould.

Puma need to re think the decor in this hotel.

On the bright side the staff were very nice.

We have stayed at this hotel 3 times under the Barceló banner and always had a nice stay. However this stay was not the best! We were put in a room right at the back of the hotel no view as such and the room was very dark so much so we had the light on n the day time. The kettle still had water in from the last guests and the element was black! I would not use it. The room was very large but extremely bare no pictures or anything made it feel empty, it also had an awful musty smell. Anyway we decided to check out the bathroom!!! Mouldy windows, shower broken and dirty mould on the silicone and grout around the shower was not nice either. I spoke to reception about my concerns and to be fair they offered to move us to another room but they only had a twin! We did not want separate beds as it was our 15th anniversary! So they sent a cleaner loaded with bleach to the room thus the room stank of bleach all night! The mould was still there and the kettle had not been changed let alone even emptied. Very disappointed, £105 a night not worth it at all. Breakfast was not great the meat and cheese on the continental was all curled up and dry look like it had been set out for hours. The scrambled eggs swam in water the beans Luke warm, the eggs snotty the rest was ok but the choice was not as good as when Barceló owned it. Then the straw that broke the camel’s back, not only where we NOT offered any discount on check out or even an apology, we where hit by a car parking charge of £4.50 !! Now that not a lot, but this charge was never made clear to us by any staff upon check in or when we booked the room, there no signs anywhere in the hotel or car park that we saw either. It was always free with Barceló i felt ripped off to be honest. So after a pretty rubbish stay and complaint that fell on deaf ears they then kick you in the nuts and charge you for parking your car in the grounds of the hotel you have just paid £105 for a night for !! I would not go back to this hotel and would say to spend your money elsewhere. Ffunny this used to be no 2 on TA wonder why its 5 now!! No Thanks

Room Tip: dont get a room at the back the ones at the front are good back is not good at all
