Description: The Three Tuns dates back to the early 16th Century - although some records make even earlier reference to this, the oldest pub in Hay on Wye.Famous for its unique charm and character, Three Tuns became a popular haunt with local characters and well known personalities such as Jools Holland, Marianne Faithful, Neil Kinnock, Huw Edwards and some as infamous as the Great Train Robbers!Unfortunately the Three Tuns suffered a devastating fire in 2005, but a sympathetic restoration has brought life to the old building once again.Enjoy the huge inglenook fires, 16th century beams and the sympathetic new additions such as the garden room and large beer garden

I had my supper in the garden, waitresses were fast and attentive. I had a lighter meal which was the wonderful Welsh Rarebit.

I was there with a party of six, and those of us who ate the standard dishes (e.g. fish and chips, ham and egg) were happy. Those who went for the adventurous dishes (e.g. a halibut, scallop and pork risotto, for instance) were very underwhelmed. The women in the party were disappointed by the desserts, but I liked the ice cream. Service was good, waiters friendly, beer and wine OK.

Expect it to be a good pub, rather than a good restaurant, and you won't be disappointed.

As returning visitors to Hay we decided on having lunch at the Three Tunns as we've been a couple of times before and have never been disappointed. Despite it being extremely hectic in Hay itself, we enjoyed a wonderful (albeit early) lunch here. I had the halibut on a barbeque pork risotto, crackling, scallop and a pea and chilli salsa. The dish worked really well and balanced perfectly. My partner had the burger which stood up well in his gastro-burger ranking. Not cheap at £18 & £12 respectively but not excessive compared to other "rip-off" Hay-fest menus we saw (e.g. a bowl of welsh cawl (lamb stew) for £15? Please!). Washed down with a pint of Stowford Press each, we left happy customers :)

Called in on Wednesday during the festival and had lunch. The food was very nice. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere welcoming. The menu had a good selection and catered for vegetarians although it was quite expensive for a pub lunch.
