Fabulous food and service. Nice pleasant helpful staff .Lovely and warm in here in January and very pleasant ambience. The waiter was lovely. It had been recommended to us by the cinema whom I would like to thank as it was great.

“Oh dear, oh dear...”

Lunchtime menu consists of over-complicated dishes, presumably to justify high prices, and bar meals are pretty unimaginative, with the cheapest being a filled baguette at £7.95 with chips and a salad with the seemingly inevitable onions. Who needs onion breath at work all afternoon? Why can't a simple baked potato with a filling be offered like it used to be? Too much bother? Why on earth can't a simple home made lasagne be offered for under £10? Why doesn't the menu change? It's all so tired.

Lunch should be served promptly - a 30 minute wait is not on, specially combined with inattentive service. It should not be necessary to have to fetch a dessert menu from the (unattended) bar whilst waiting interminably for first course plates to be cleared - unacceptable specially when only two other tables in use.

This lovely place used to be good, but it's now just disappointing and best avoided for lunch at least.

“Winter weekend”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2012

Cosy Olde Worlde pub. Stayed in Cromwell Suite which was very characterful with amazingly comfy bed. . Staff very friendly. Food in the evening was very average although nicely presented and nowhere near as grand as website describes (frozen chips not handcut as described for example). Brilliant breakfast. Overall, a good experience.

“Great choice on menu with food cooked to perfection.”

We ate in the bar area as this is more of a foodie inn than a drinking inn. It was busy so the atmosphere was ideal. There was a specials board and the food was very tasty (pheasant terrine starter, duck main with dauphinoise potatoes) and affordable - £6 / 7 for a starter and £15 for a main. Service was very friendly and there was a good wine list from £12 a bottle to £64 a bottle depending on what takes your fancy.

“Great food and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012 via mobile

The Old Black Lion was recommended to us by two local people and certainly lived up to those recommendations. Excellent food and friendly service in a quiet bar. Looks like an ordinary town pub from the outside but welcoming and comfortable inside.
