“Hidden gem found.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2013 via mobile

We found this hotel online while looking at Hay-On-Wye and we were immediately hooked by the name. This hotel has a lot of character! The room we booked had a king size four poster bed, a huge bathtub, a very nice shower, and nice seating areas. The views from our windows were beautiful. If you're looking for the gloss and shine of a modern 5-star hotel, this is NOT the hotel for you. The Hall is very old and a bit worn, but the service can't be beat. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful...even when off duty, they are willing to do everything they can to make your stay pleasant. Be warned, though...this hotel is off the beaten path and a car or taxi will definitely be needed to reach it. All in all, a lovely hotel and I would recommend it to anyone.

The Laverda Owners Club have been coming here for many years to hold our annual rally. We are about 100 in total and hire the whole hotel for the weekend.
The staff are extremely helpful, polite and cheerful, and unintrusive,a rare thing. We had a great supper this year again, including some lovely lamb, and vegetarian options. For us it offers everything, camping, dorms and great rooms,to suit all.And a swimming pool.
Set in great scenery thoroughly recommended for those who love a hotel with a difference and don:t make out like its a favour to stay here.

oh and we are going back next year of course! Thanks to all the staff again.

The low cost dormitory accomodation at Baskerville is perfect for a good value weekend away with friends. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfy, what more can you ask for? The food was also extremely good and very fairly priced. I like the informal atmosphere and the staff were friendly and efficient. It's a spectacular building in a beautiful setting. Highly recommended.

My 2nd time here.
Unique place, well run and great value for money. Staff courteous, meals excellent and brought out together (80 people +)

I was camping so cant speak for the dorms and rooms but it's a friendly place priced to suit those on a budget too, Wouldn't hesitate to return, its worth it for the breakfast alone !

The receptionist was even kind enough to lend me her personal phone, when I couldn't get a signal, but you will get a signal outside .

Try it for a relaxing weekend and a great base for exploring.

Room Tip: I camped, so no experience of the rooms

We stayed here in August this year. On driving up the long drive from the main road the hotel looked fab, and we weren't disappointed. An amazing entrance hall and friendly, helpful staff to meet us. We stayed with our daughters' in a massive family room which was very old fashioned, and perhaps a little tired, but quirky all the same. The room was clean and tidy - a must!! The food was fab and prices were reasonable both in the restaurant and the bar. The girls made full use of the swimming pool. Not good mobile signal, but that's fine with us!! Definitely worth a re-visit to explore the beautiful area some more.

Room Tip: Room 3 - excellent for families and away from all noise. Also a beautiful view of the Black Mountai...

Used the hotel as a base for a training course, didn't experience the bedrooms or leisure facilities. Arrived on a Monday morning to find the filed and hotel full of hangers on from a music festival in various states of stupor! Staff were very pleasant but overwhelmed. Once that had gone we had an excellent service from friendly staff and the food was excellent. The décor is tired but interesting features and there is even a wifi hot-spot, its the reception hall and that's about it. Forget phone signal, you wont need it, the scenery is breath-taking

Firstly I would like to say what an amazing building, yes it's old but full of character. First impressions the staff were so welcoming and approachable. We met the owner David who is such a lovely man and is very hands on with the running of things within the venue. He didn't let on he was the owner though but we were later told. He gave us some info on the history which was very interesting to say the least. The chef was brill and nothing was too much trouble as were all the staff we met. The views were stunning and well worth a visit. We will definitely return without a doubt. Hope they don't change anything, keep running things the way you are now. Thank you for a lovely stay.
