I stayed at the Seven Stars when my mum and I went to Hay for a couple of days for some relaxation and bookshop browsing and we could not have picked a better place to stay. The staff are so friendly and helpful, and me and mum got very excited that we had the room that Ruth Jones (Gavin and Stacey) had stayed in!! The room was lovely, gorgeous sloping ceiling and great view, bathroom immaculate and shower divine, and we had a lovely nights sleep! The pool and sauna is an added bonus, and we were given some great advice about where to eat in Hay, which we follwed and had a couple of lovely meals. The Granary (our favourite cafe in Hay) is also right opposite so the b&b is perfectly situated! We have just booked to stay there again in November, and my advice would be, if you want somewhere relaxing, cosy and welcoming, STAY HERE! :)

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have a great view.

have just read some of the reviews on the 7 stars, im not the sort of person who writes reviews but wanted to say that i had a fantastic weekend there and was a bit shocked at some of the slightly negative comments as i personally couldnt fault it and i think im pretty fussy, it comes highly recomended with very friendly staff, great food and great charecter, i will return.

We returned to the Seven Stars from 18th-20th September this year....and we rather look on this as our home from home; as we visit Hay regularly in the autumn to add to our collections and hunt for our winter reading! We were greeted with a lovely warm welcome and it was good to be back! Seven Stars - right in the middle of Hay - has its own swimming pool and sauna...and its own car park....(central parking is at a premium in Hay, so this is a huge benefit, especially when bags of books and craft things need to be returned to base halfway through the day!)

We stayed in the main hotel on our first visit about fifteen years ago...beams, sloping floors, atmospheric charm and an en-suite! (We don't remember the clock during the night, think the chimes may be off until seven a.m.) The next year we booked last minute and had Room 1 over the pool - as we have had ever since...no special reason...we just like it! This year there was a new comfortable bed, fresh linen, new cheerful curtains and pictures....a flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities, storage for clothes and a small en-suite (renewed window in the roof) with a clean adjustable hot power shower, soaps and shampoo and plenty of towels, renewed daily if required...(there's a friendly notice in the en-suite which tells how to request fresh towels..this hotel subscribes to the "eco friendly towel system" we've seen in other hotels in London). Our room was warm and there was no chlorine smell. It was cleaned properly each day...and the tea and coffe and biscuits were renewed (diffferent biscuits too!)

Although over the pool, the only noise we heard was from a group of Very Small People and their Mums having a wonderful time one morning after breakfast.

The breakfast menu is delicious...cerials, fruit juices, yoghurts ....home-made compote.... and a wide choice of hot breakfasts (including scrambled eggs and smoked salmon,...yum!) There's a vegetarian option and plenty of hot toast, tea and coffee.

Nothing was too much trouble for the staff....and they have plenty of information about Hay itself...places to eat ...changes in bookshops...interesting things happening. it's all there if you need it! Just ask! We'll be back to stay at the Seven Stars in 2013...we're looking forward to it already!!

Room Tip: This small room is quiet after the 9pm pool closure. It's a light, bright room in the mornings.

Owner Could Not Have Been Lovelier, Allowing Us To book In 3 Hours Early, Giving Us Free Car Parking, & Directing Us To Various Pubs And Restaurants For Dinner.

Room Was Immaculate And Cosy With Fluffy Towels. My Only Gripe Was The Lack Of Decent Toiletries And No Hairdryer.

Uninterrupted Night's Sleep, Followed By A Great Breakfast. Quiet And Relaxing Atmos. The Only Thing That Could Keep You Awake Staying Here Is A Guilty Conscience.

Booked a weekend by telephone with owner at £80/night. Offered a pool room, declined as did not want to use pool nor have intrusion of chlorine. Told we would be in main house.
Arrived and taken to a small room above the pool. The bathroom needed a good clean with mildew around shower, but worst of all it smelt strongly of chlorine from the pool below.
Complained, and moved to 1st floor room at the front of house. This room was traditional room, full of character with sloping floors.

Staff were friendly, and breakfast was fairly good.

Big big issue was the noise all night from the opposite clock tower which struck on the hour and a single strike each quarter hour. The weekend away became a tiring event as we struggled for sleep each night due to the regular noise from the clock.

Complained to owner when paying on the Sunday. Rather cross with responses... "we get used to that" and "maybe you needed more wine"

Hay is a beautiful place, but I would never stay here again.

Room Tip: Avoid the front of the house for all night clock tower noise. Avoid the pooln rooms if chlorine sme...

Hello fellow Hay on Wye travellers! My partner and I recently stayed at the Seven Stars B&B for two nights. It is slap-bang in the centre of the town, which is great for browsing around the shops and bookshops, of which there are many (all of which are marvellous). When we arrived at Seven Stars, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our room. The owner recommended places to eat and gave us a rough indication of where things were around the town, she was extremely friendly and helpful. I have noticed many reviews on here discuss the clock tower chime, so I will too! ...Our room looked out onto the clock tower and I am a rather light sleeper, but I did not hear a peep from the tower chimes on either night. Which, of course was great. So we both had a lovely night sleep. The room has an 'olde worldy' feel with wooden beams and the such like, which I always think makes a place look extremely cosy and have character. The breakfast is definately scrum'diddily'umptious, and the nice thing about it is that you have a choice of what you want e.g. full english, vegetarian option, scrambled/ poached egg on toast (the latter of which was my choice-yummy!).

If I had to mention one negative point, it would be that when the room was cleaned, our towels were not changed to fresh ones (even though we did pop them in the tub as that was procedure to say 'hey, could I have some fresh towels please?'). Also, our bin had not been emptied and it was rather full. Basically, 'cleaning' the room just involved making the bed and popping more milk and biscuits in the tea tray. The biscuits of which I gobbled up straight away. To be honest, this is only a small negative point and didn't bother either of us greatly. The staff, location and last but by no means least, the food made our trip an excellent one. We will definately be returning here! Hurrah!

We have just returned a weekend break at the Seven Stars, which we thorougly enjoyed. This was our first stay at the Seven Stars and in Hay-on-Wye, and we weren't disappointed.

We stayed in room 3, in the main building of the establishment. The building had many old features which really added to its charm. Our room was comfortable, with all the necessary extras that we needed to feel relaxed. The shower was one of the better ones we'd experienced on visits away.

My favourite part of our visit was definetly the full english. It kept us going strong until the afternoon and was absolutly delicious.

The swimming pool and sauna was a bonus too; we used this on two occasions, once on the Friday evening and then late on Saturday afternoon. It was an excellent way to relax after walking around the town.

As for Hay-on-Wye itself, it was a dream to me. We literally spent hours delving in and out of the bookshops. Add to that the charming shops and the elegant cafes (The Granary opposite the Seven Stars is definetly worth a visit for its delightful cakes!), and I wholely reccommend visiting the town.

Thanks to the staff at the Seven Stars who made our visit so enjoyable. We will be back next year!
