Great National Ballykisteen Golf Hotel
Ranked #1 of 3 Hotels in Tipperary
Reviewed February 4, 2013

To start I will say that my wife and myself had a lovely night in the Ballykisteen Hotel and Golf resort. We were given a voucher for a night as a Christmas present and were expecting a lovely, modern 4 star hotel. The staff were excellent from start to finish, the food was superb and the room was immaculately clean. Unfortunately there were some basics which let this hotel down.

The furniture in the room was fresh but basic. It was more in line with a 90's travelodge than a modern 4 star. The main issue I would have though was the upkeep and maintenance. The fan in our bathroom did not work and there was a piece from the bath/shower attachment missing. This was very little really but it was the communal areas which were let down.

One of the walls in the bar (beside the tv) was damp looking with two full widths of wallpaper peeling off. It was a little shocking to see in a modern hotel. The bar was basic and much more along the lines of a golf clubhouse bar rather than a hotel facility

Again, small things like a lot of cracked tiles on the stairs let the standard down.

The leisure centre needs attention. The changing rooms were dirty looking with no mats on the tiled floor. There were only three lockers with doors and the one I did pick, when opened, the door came off in my hand. The steam room again needs urgent attention as there are at least six areas where the mosaic tiles have fallen off and need to be replaced. This is a shame because the pool and hot tub are gorgeous.

Overall a nice hotel with friendly staff and really excellent food. Needs a little modernisation and a lot more care with upkeep and basic maintenance.

Hope this helps!

We booked a weekend at this hotel for 3 couples with spa vouchers from pigsback.com. 2 weeks before our stay we tried to book spa treatments and no times were available so as the lads were playing golf we asked could the vouchers be used for golf we were told no and that it said in the terms and conditions we had to book treatments at time of booking stay. It didn't say this in the terms and conditions. 2 days before our stay we were told we could have 3 half hour appointments and golf was complementary. Naturally we thought great this place had sorted everything. Both spa and golf were great but the rest not so much. When we arrived at 9 we were told food stopped at 8.55. So no food that night we had a few drinks the pints were not good so the guys changed to Heineken bottles which were out of date but all they had so we got a discount no bar receipts all weekend. There was one bottle of cranberry juice so that was it when that was gone. Miller bottles were sometimes 300ml and other times 330 always same price though bought in uk. No glasses tided from table on Friday or Saturday night. The restaurant on Saturday night had an awful menu with no veg option when we asked the option was tagliatelle! We ordered off the bar menu. The wine list of a four star hotel had 3 white 3 red and one sparkling. We ordered red which was poured before we tasted it. Food was ok though I didn't like mine. The entrance to reception has no lights turned on and the ashtray outside reception was not emptied all weekend. Staff seemed miserable. Breakfast was nice. Everyone there seemed to be on some deal like pigsback. Bed was very bouncy not a great sleep and water pump running all night

My husband and I had our wedding at this hotel on the 11/08/2012 and I must say we did pick a winner, We got to deal with 2 great ladies Catherine and Emma they could not have done anymore for us, We did book our wedding 2 years ahead as we live over in OZ and they taught we were mad when we just call from OZ to book the date but we had been to the hotel before and loved it.We meet them over the christmas of 2010 and they went throught everything with us.When we got back to OZ most of the details was done over emails but they were happy to call us over here,We only got to go home 2 weeks before the wedding and they did everything to help us,We had friend over from OZ and they were so happy with the lodges. The food the staff and the whole day was out of this world,We had a magic man and they gave him a great area to set up,Our photographer Shane O Sullivan loved the grounds as did we and we got some fab photos. We do send a big thanks to all the staff and to all the people we got to deal with from the hotel we will be back for a stay when we are home again.

Not long back from a brilliant bootcamp weekend at ballykisteen. There was a a really good mix of activities included in the itenerary including circuit&gym training, zumba, aqua aerobics, toning, outdoor bootcamp, etc. not to mention some relaxing time in the sauna/steamroom and jacuuzi :-) with some additional activities on offer for the men.

The fitness instructors were excellent pushing us all the way while learning a lot to take away after bootcamp in terms of fitness and nutrition.

Overall, it was hard work but good fun and well worth doing and excellent value for money.

I brought mum away for her birthday to Ballykisteen hotel & golf resort. It roughly took us just over two hours coming from Dublin. My trip was with a voucher for €99 for two nights for two people B&B with a €25 spa voucher.

The grounds were nice, plenty of car parking spaces. Our room over looked the golf course. I think all bedrooms overlooked the golf course. The Hotel also have Lodges to rent out if you didn't wanted to be confined to just a hotel room. The Lodges are quite reasonable to rent as we inquired at reception desk. Ideal for a group of ladies going away for a girlie weekend or a lads golfing get-away.

We had booked into the spa for the Saturday. The Spa voucher was €25 each and not €25 between us as I originally thought. Mum and myself both had a facial and a back massage. Since we had the voucher, it only costed us the back massage, bargain! I would recommend the Spa. The young girls are absolutely lovely and do a fantastic job. The spa offers a variety of treatments so I'm sure you will find something that will take your fancy. All treatments were very responsible.

If you are looking to do some shopping, The Crescent shopping centre is in Limerick, roughly 30 min drive as we drove there on the Saturday and surprisingly it didn't take too long. The Crescent shopping centre is very big, so wear comfortable shoes as your feet will be killing you by the time you are finished shopping. It has every shop you can possibly think of so you won’t be disappointed.

The hotel server food in the bar and they also have a restaurant. They had a good variety of food on the bar menu at a reasonable price. I'm not sure what the bar food tastes like as we ate in the restaurant on the Saturday night. They have 3 course meal for €29.99. There was a good variety on the menu and should cater for most people and the food was beautiful.

The breakfast is fantastic, a great variety for everybody. This is self service and is a very good idea, The breakfast consists of, yogurts, pastries, fruits, breads, jams, fruit juices, cereal, rashers, sausages, puddings, hash browns, beans, mushrooms to name a few :)

A few niggly things, Sorry :(
There was no background music in the restaurant in the evening. This would have helped not to over hear other peoples conversation and it would have lighten the atmosphere. Music was played at breakfast time and it just felt more relaxing.

There was no light out the back, beside the bar. Its nice that you have a few seats for people to sit but at night time when people are having a few drinks in the bar and go out there for a smoke, they may very easily fall due to no light. Maybe this is a none smoking area but it was beside the bar and had an ashtray.

The free wifi is not in all the rooms, it is only in the bar area..

Overall stay way very pleased indeed and I would recommend this Hotel.

I really enjoyed staying here. The rooms were large and clean with everything you could possibly need to enjoy your stay and the heating is controlled in the room. I couldn't get the free internet in my room to work but there is free Wifi downstairs which worked perfectly. Staff were really friendly and chatty and the meals were wonderful. The beauty spa is excellent and very reasonably priced as well, so make sure you treat yourself while there (don't forget to book) Plenty of parking and there is also the golf course if you have the time.

Room Tip: I don't think you could go too far wrong with this hotel.
