“Cottage stay”
Reviewed February 14, 2018 for a stay in February 2018

My wife and I had the most lovely stay at Oakgrove cottage. It was the perfect setting, great for walking, close to everything you would need, a lovely peaceful setting. The cottage itself was immaculately clean, had everything you could ever possibly need for self catering, with the extra surprise of a visit from the resident badger, coming in the evening for a snack, kindly supplied by the owners. I would wholeheartedly recommend a stay at the cottage, for either a short or long stay, plenty to do a see. We cannot wait to go back.

“A Perfect Retreat”

Oakgrove cottage is comfortable and well equipped set in stunningly beautiful countryside overlooking the Wye Valley. We only had four days but for two of those we were able to leave the car behind and meander the country lanes and public footpaths, up to St. Briavels Castle and down through the woods and along the River Wye to Tintern Abbey. The woods carpeted in wild garlic, bluebells and wild anemones, the stone hedges and verges covered in wild flowers. The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail is really interesting, each piece a reference to the history of this landscape. The highlight was the badger arriving on the patio each evening around 9.15pm. On the two evenings we ate out we had to be back for the badger! The George Inn St. Briavels (good pub food) and Aahaan Thai Monmouth (excellent, book & BYO). Two badgers arrived on our last night and then just before we left two lambs were born to the Jacobs ewes in the field fronting the cottage. Gina and Paul are welcoming and helpful hosts with a wealth of information about the area. The Brockweir village shop is very well stocked, wish we'd found it earlier. There's so many places to visit here, can't wait to go back to relax in the garden, gazing down the valley with a morning coffee or beer O'clock glass in hand then to walk the lanes and back for badgers. Perfect!

We had a wonderful week in Oakgrove Cottage. The setting is beautiful and very quiet. The hikes in the near Wye Valley are highly recommended. The cottage offers all you need for two people and the owners are very friendly and attentive. And yes, we had a visit from the badger in the evening!

“Badgers, birds and walking boots”
Reviewed October 10, 2016 for a stay in October 2016

Just back from another lovely week in Oakgrove Cottage, celebrating the 20th anniversary of my first visit. Generations of birds and badgers have come and gone since, but the wildlife is still just as diverse, the badgers just as greedy for peanuts and digestive biscuits, the cottage just as comfortable and peaceful. Gina and Paul (and Saffy the cat) as always very welcoming and helpful. Walkers are spoiled for choice here, with many routes within very easy reach. Looking forward to my next visit!

“Great location, quiet, badgers and birds”
Reviewed July 29, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

Great little place to stay. Good location - walking distance to Offa's Dyke, Wye River walks, and Tintern Abbey. A short drive from Brecon Beacons, Llanthony Priory and only about an hour from Hay-on-Wye.
The wildlife was fantastic (badgers every night, a wide variety of birds etc) and the views over the valley are great.
We booked very late but it was organised very quickly and everything was clean, tidy and in good order. The comments in the visitors book suggest lots of other people have had a good time, too.

“Perfect”

We enjoyed an excellent week at Oakgrove. The accommodation was very comfortable, the surroundings extremely relaxing and the entertainment, provided by the local badgers, was unique.
We went to this area to enjoy the walking and we were not disappointed. After a energetic day walking in this beautiful area it was a pleasure to be able to relax in Oakgrove and its surroundings. The wildlife visiting the garden was the icing on the cake.

“A wonderful week spent in a wonderful cottage”
Reviewed June 19, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

My wife and I have just spent an idyllic week staying at Oakgrove Cottage. It certainly lived up to the description provided on the Holiday Lettings website and more. Both my wife and I have been fortunate in being able to travel the world and as the saying goes, have seen that, done that and brought the T shirt, by booking a holiday in the Forest of Dean we were looking for a retreat to spend a week relaxing away from traffic and noise and general hussle and bussle of urban life. We most certainly found peace and tranquility at Oakgrove cottage. The location is superb the cottage is surrounded by trees yet when the sun shines the patio and lawns are bathed in sunshine. The wildlife that visit the garden is exceptional during our weeks stay we were treated to a wide ranch of wild birds, nuthatches, robins, coletits, bluetits, chiffchaffs, two different types of woodpeckers and many other species. A number of badgers visited the patio nightly, we saw squirrels, rabbits,a fox and were honoured with a visit by a cock pheasant on a number of occasions.
The cottage is also an ideal base for those who who enjoy walking.
Paul and Gina Butler were wonderful hosts.
