Arriving on a Saturday night after the races, we had booked a table for 16, but for various reasons this dropped to 10 on the day, so I called to advise of this out of courtesy in advance..."no problem"" was the reply. Unfortunately to the man we know now to be the Manager it seemed to be a problem. We decided to use only two thirds of the table (which was a number of tables pushed together) enabling the rest to be used by someone else. He couldnt help mentioning he had had other enquiries for tables... and promptly moved away the unused table, scattering the cutlery and glasses to the floor. As one of our party was still parking we had saved a seat with a bag although despite advising of this, in a strange 'Basil' moment he implied this was not acceptable while seemingly talking to himself! .. awkward..That aside the food was good and reasonably priced. There were a few cock ups with the order meaning one member if the party got her starter when the rest had finished theirs...and in common with another review, we got a "sorry love" apology; we didn't find this offensive but that may not be true of everyone. The staff left us alone but to the point where we had to find them in order to prompt for bills, drinks. ....an unconfirmed report from the table behind who were regulars attending a wedding anniversary was that the same Manager mentioned earlier had "shown them up at the bar" over a discount voucher or similar and despite their loyalty they "would never be back" .It was also rumoured he was slightly worse for wear......

With my Mother and Wife, we had a table booked for 7pm on a Monday night as a treat from my Mother, We arrived at about 6:45 and were told by the waiter that as they were busy we would have to wait a bit to order (a handful of contractors staying overnight and 1 other table of 4)
Choosing from a very tatty laminated bar food menu and a sheet of paper ,we ordered our starters and 3 fillet steaks for the main.
After my mother complained to the owner that we had been waiting for nearly an hour and not even got our starters, we were informed that only two fillet steaks were available,The waiter then brought out 2 soups even though only one was ordered and told us that the meal would be "on the house" but would have to accept the soups and not what was ordered. We told the waiter that this was not acceptable, when he returned them to the kitchen, we heard "They're having it on the house" as if to say, have what you're given or lump it! The final straw came when the waiter said "sorry about that Love" to my mother, that is when we got up and left - never to return.

No dislikes, sensibly priced, old fashioned but high quality place and service. Good food, comfortable room and bed with a well stocked bar.
