“Perfect Weekend Escape”
Reviewed March 22, 2016 for a stay in March 2016

Great quiet weekend escape from reality. Amazing location and fabulous accommodation just for two.
The history of the Gatehouse, the Court and the surrounding area is fascinating. There are a couple of good short local walks that go via the great local pub - The Millers Arms - which we can thoroughly recommend

“We loved it!!”
Reviewed January 7, 2016 for a stay in November 2015

We loved the Welsh gatehouse! The building itself is stunning and spacious, and wonderfully restored. Even though it rained most of the time we were there, being able to come back to our own cosy castle was such a treat! The kitchen was brilliantly equipped, and the welcome basket was a lovely surprise.

Thank you for letting us borrow it for a long weekend!

“Our Own Little Castle”
Reviewed November 21, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

This was our most talked about lodging during 19 days in the UK. How often do you get to stay in a 13th century mini-castle all by yourselves? From the minute you step through the small door in the gate, you know you are walking back in time. Now granted, the upgrades make this a comfortable inn with a kitchen and bathroom to match our times, but just walking up the rest of the spiral staircase to the tower gives you the feeling of being the lord of your realm.
The innkeeper gives you a generous welcome basket that we made good use of. And the kitchen is quite adequate to prepare meals if you are staying a few days. We unfortunately only had one night to spend, but it was a great experience. Word for the wise: don't drink the bottle of wine and then think you're going to climb into bed and easily navigate to the bathroom. The bedroom is up a steep staircase that almost qualifies as a wide ladder. The bathroom/toilet is down on the main level. Even the numerous stairs to the mail level are steep and narrow, so if you've got bad knees, take a pass on this lovely but really ancient building.
We ate dinner at a pub that was very close by and it was wonderful. The people were all singing and a few stopped by our table for conversation.
The instructions are exhaustive. If you read them, you will be prepared to get there by car, to get in to the Gatehouse and to enjoy your stay. As per those instructions, don't think you're going to bring a full size suitcase up those spiral stairs. Opt instead for an overnight bag with the essentials.
The shower/toilet are good; very cleverly designed to fit the area. We had no problems at all and wished we could have stayed longer. My wife did get a little scared thinking about fire and how to escape, but hey, if it's been there 700 years, I'm not going to worry about that on our one night.
The Welsh Gatehouse is worth the stay, just to say you did it. It's a beautiful area and a chance to be a part of history.

“Unique”
Reviewed August 29, 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Completely unique stay in a medieval gatehouse with mullioned windows and brocade curtains similar to ones we imagined finding in a baronial hall. Large comfortable lounge and kitchen with windows on both sides and good lighting. Well equipped kitchen and very generous welcome basket. Lovely flower filled garden which links the Gatehouse to the main house. A truly romantic place to stay. One word of warning - you do need agility to be comfortable with the climb up to the bedroom and the stairs to the living area are steep. The bathroom is too small to have an enclosed shower cubicle so you will be mopping the floor after each shower. But these are small prices to pay for such a special experience.

“Magical place to stay”
Reviewed July 18, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

The Gatehouse lived up to our expectations, so beautifully restored but keeping its medieval feel.. Wonderful, peaceful setting, lovely watching the sun go down from the roof of the tower in the evenings. Such a relaxing week, feeling away from it all, but in easy reach of places to visit. Would recommend to anyone who is fit and able enough to cope with the spiral stairs, of which there are 29 to the main floor. We will certainly visit again.

“UNIQUE”
Reviewed July 9, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Where else will you ascend a spiral staircase to reach your living room, climb a ladder to duck under a beam to go to bed and open a hatch cover to step out at the top of the tower to view the Severn Bridges? The Welsh Gatehouse will not suit everyone but for those it does it is and will remain a unique experience. The vote is 4/5 because and only because it will never be a universal choice.
