“What you would expect from a Marriott Country Club”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

St.Pierre is a 14th century manor set amid 400 acres of parkland in the Wye Valley, and has 131 bedrooms and suites. Situated between Chepstow and Newport in South Wales, the M4 motorway is close by, and allow easy access to Newport, Cardiff, and even Bristol (via the Severn Toll Bridge).

There are two restaurants choose from the AA rosette award winning Morgans Restaurant or the contemporary Zest Restaurant both situated in the main hotel. I prefer Morgan's restaurant, as it isn't the usual Marriott food, or the same dishes served up for room service. To be honest, when staying here I usually make the short journey (5-6 mins in a car) to Chepstow, where there are a number of good quality restaurants. Our favourites are Sitar Balti (indian), Shangri La (Chinese) ,or the Red Lantern (Chinese).

The Hotel has a Spa and a good size Gym and swimming pool, as well as the Championship golf Course designed around an 11 acre lake, and some tennis courts.

As you approach the hotel, there is a large car park to the right, this has a small entrance in the wall , which takes you to what looks like a small housing estate. These are some of the hotel suites (they don't advertise this!). The 'lake view room' 'houses' consist of an upper floor: a two roomed suite (bedroom & living/dining room). The ground floor are separated into two smaller standard room. I have noticed that the floors in all of the 'houses' (I stayed in all of them) have terrible creaks when walking on the floor boards, the same can be said of the floors in the main hotel. I am always concerned, that late at night, I may disturb any guest below, so end up tip-toeing around!

I hope this review help.

“Faded glory, 6 hour golf and only one half decent course”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2013

The hotel is past it's best and the Mathern golf course is very poor. The Championship Course is better but on the day we played it took nearly six hours to get round. This is unacceptable in my view and there was no sign of marshals trying to speed things along.
The rooms are ok but the infrastructure around is pretty tired. This needs a rethink all round. The lack of wifi in rooms other than on a paid basis is a minor qualm in this day and age although wifi was free for 24 hours in public areas.
It is obviously very popular but I think there are better places to stay and play.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2013 via mobile

We booked for afternoon tea which was priced at £12.50 a head. The sandwiches were very limited to smoked salmon and cream cheese, ham and mustard and egg and cress a total of 3 sandwiches per person. The cake selection was very poor with what appeared to be shop bought fruit cake and chocolate eclairs and a bland strawberry "tart" consisting of flavourless pastry, bland whipped cream and a sliced strawberry over the top. The prestentation was lovely and the selection teas was good. However, considering the reputation of this place I expected much more! The grounds are stunning and the staff are helpful and welcoming but I can't help feeling let down by the quality of the food.

“relaxing and peaceful hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2013

Really enjoyed this beautiful hotel. Our room was actually a one bedroom apartment (not in the actual hotel). It was a short walk from the hotel but could park car right outside.
The living room had a balcony, and our bedroom was very spacious.
The grounds of the hotel has a small church in it, which does a sunday service.
The hotel staff were extremely friendly and look like they enjoy working here.
We will definately be returning.

“A very well maintained course”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2013

There were some great views from a few of the holes but for the most part it was pretty flat. Lots of trees to make it interesting. Do no go in the brush after your ball and they sting like crazy for several days.
