“Nice hotel: horrendous restaurant”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2009

Hotel lovely, nice olde world atmosphere. Rooms comfortable and nice. Staff on check in polite and helpful. however, restaurant was APPALLING. Food stupidly overpriced - £18 for salmon steak. sides extra!!! sides came covered in salt and had to been returned. food good quality (aside from the salt) but nowhere near justifying this amount of money. restaurant modern and absolutley no atmosphere, direct contrast to the rest of the building. restaurant staff rude and unhelpful. The restaurnat manager was already occupied with complaints from two other table, so waited till check out to express unhappiness however, person who deals with complaints already speaking with another couple complaining about the restaurant. Left feedback on comments form asking them to get in touch, however six months later still have not heard from them. If you plan to go out or phone in pizza this a lovely place to stay but do not any expections of a pleasant meal.

We, as four golfers got a great deal of £120 each for both courses, dinner, bed and breakfast. The main hotel is an old building and very good to look at and walk through. Booking in very good the staff overall were tremendous. The rooms standard really but clean and most importantly with Sky Sports.

Old Course - Get used to the climb up the hill dont worry, because from the 5th on this is a quality golf course the signature holes must be the 10th, 15th, 17th and 18th a great finish to the round. Quality, quality, quality.

Dinner - I was disapointed that Morgans was shut when we were here however the Zest made up for it with a good range of good food and again great service. We had a few too many anyway, so what did we care.

Mathern - Starts off relatively easy but with the wind and the ditches this was testing but had its fair share of risk and reward par fours, tough par threes and some great long par 's all in all a good test although not in anyway up to its older neighbour. Best holes? 14th up the hill and 18th 186 yard par three up the hill and in our case into the wind.

Stayed here for one night as part of a family tour of Wales in late December; rate was 90 GBP per room/night including breakfast. It’s located about 15 minutes across the Welsh border in the countryside and on the same property as a golf resort. Part of the hotel is in the original stone building, but our rooms were in the new wing. They were a bit smaller than expected but overall fine, and standard Marriott fare – clean, with comfortable beds. The grounds of the hotel are very pretty and if you came to golf as well, I’m sure that it’d be a good time. Parking is a bit “cramped” in that the spots are close together and the corridor for navigating the car is a bit tight, but other than that no complaints. If you’re interested in seeing a castle there is one in the town about 10 minute drive from the hotel that you can walk through and around; it’s not as large as Caerphilly or Caernarfon, but it is closer and pretty cool.

Hotel is very beautiful with lovely quiet grounds. Parts of the hotel were built in the 14th Century and there are lots of oak panels, real wood fires, beams etc. The staff are very friendly and have been very highly trained in customer service - we got the feeling that nothing would be too much trouble.

The room was clean and looked out onto the golf course - very peaceful. The bed was HUGE and very comfortable. Could have stayed in bed all day but we managed to get up and have breakfast - which was excellent. We chose the full english from the buffet but there was also cereal, muffins, fresh fruit etc.

There was a wedding held on the day we stayed there, but we did not hear any noise from the party and our room was close to the main building. Overall, an excellent stay. Could not find any fault with this hotel.

  • Liked — Peace and quiet and beautiful building

It's a bit off of the beaten path, but if you're into golf and a period experience, it's worth it. The hotel occupies the grounds of an old castle and next to a country club with a beautiful course.

Parts of the grounds are period--including many of the rooms and the dining room. Other parts are current--including most notably a great exercise facility that is part of the country club.

Overall a very pleasant surprise that more than made up for the 45 minute drive to Cardiff every day.

My partner and I had booked three nights at St Pierre to celebrate his birthday and escape the January blues, we are pleased we did.

The Hotel

The main hotel is a 14th Century manor house adjacent to St Pierre Church which was quaint and peaceful. There is an annexe of small guest cottages, hotel rooms extended onto the main building and a separate lakeside village. We had booked a standard room but were upgraded to a lakeside room on arrival. The Lakeside Village is a collection of standalone buildings each containing several rooms, it does resemble a small housing estate but is pleasant and surrounded by the expansive golf course and lake. You are also able to park your car by your room which makes getting out & about more convenient. The village is only 5 minutes walk max from the main hotel and we were in the very last building.

The Room

The room was better than we expected with a king size bed and a large window which opened up onto the lake itself where swans and ducks gathered. Every other room had a balcony but we couldn't complain as it was a free upgrade. The towels provided were fluffy bath sheets rather than the tiny, scratchy towels many hotels give you and the high ceilings gave an air of space and light. It didn't bother us but the only complaint about the room would be the empty mini bar, with refrigeration turned off.

Food

We opted to eat in the Zest restuarant the first night. Service was prompt and efficient and the food was good. I didn't find the menu particularly inspiring but that may be to do with taste (it's available on their website). I do think the food was overpriced with only a couple of options under £18ish and the house wine was nearly £20, but I think that comes with the territory of hotel restaurants. We didn't eat at Morgans as this was pricier still. We did order room service and again the food was good (steak and balsamic onion flatbread with rocket and parmesan was great). Breakfast was ok, we had it in room each morning and it was unfortunately cold each day but we were some way from the kitchen. I'm sure it would of been much better if we had bothered to go to the restaurant!

Facilities

The pool, spa pool, gym, steam room and sauna were all of a high standard although the pool was small. However, as it is open to the public it can get quite busy and there are often young children who sometimes made relaxing a little harder. We used the facilities early morning (before 9am) and it was already filling up but we were able to use the spa and steam room alone on several occaisions. We don't play golf but the course looked impressive and was certainly popular with golf shops and a driving range.

The only minor complaints would be the price of the restaurants and the lack of a mini bar. We were also not impressed with the manager who checked us out. The person in front of us was served by a young woman who seemed genuinely concerned if the guest had had a nice stay and made an effort to correct a minor error (which the guest had made not the hotel). However, when we were called forth by the manager he was brusque and a little rude. He had no interest in whether we enjoyed our stay and when we were presented with a bill we didn't expect he offered no apology and told us he could get the leaflet that told us about the charges. We weren't disputing the charges just stating our surprise. He also charged us for a paper we didn't have and again offered no sincere apology just asked for our card back to refund the money. Not a big deal but a bit disappointing after what otherwise would have been a very pleasant stay.

  • Liked — The sense of space, the room.
  • Disliked — The manager on the front desk, the pricey food/wine.

We recently stayed here for a friends wedding and were very impressed. I had been expecting a modern, glass like, sterile place and this couldn't be more different! The old building makes it charming and welcoming.
The rooms are good, with all the usual elements, the staff were very helpful and friendly, the fitness suite, etc was very impressive and we did not want for anything. Breakfast was also very very good.
The only negative was the room service food which lacked somewhat but was ok - definitley make the effort to go down to breakfast as it is FAR superior to what you receive in the room.
We would return!
