“Fantastic weekend!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2013

Have just stayed for weekend for my husband's 50th birthday. The hotel is amazing, Beautiful 14th century manor house in lovely gardens. The leisure facilities were very enjoyable and I have seen a recent review saying 'pool was full of kids' well all I can say is book a hotel for couples/adult groups only. My daughters both really enjoyed the jacuzzi and pool areas. The breakfasts were second to none - huge choice and nice seating area. The golf course though we did not play on it looked very good and I can imagine it being a lovely venue for a wedding. My husband was treated to chocolates and card from the hotel team. Nice touch! Thankyou. Will be returning soon!

Room Tip: Rooms with view to golf course

Came here for a girls spa day last weekend, using the word spa very lightly, pool full of kids, dirty tiles, steam room smelt like a damp mouldy room the door was black, my friend sat on a loose screw in the sauna which had only been re opened that day, generally the Spa area was that poor we spent less than half an hour in there before getting dressed and heading to the zest restaurant, greeted by one of the rudest gentlemen I've come across, soup was cold also, coleslaw was vile tempted to say out of date due to the tangyness off it. Complained at the reception before leaving, and still awaiting a reply to my email sent on Sunday. The only positive thing to come out of the day was our facials which were very enjoyable beauty staff were great.

We stayed here for 2 nights last week ( 23-25th Sept) as Celtic Manor was fully booked and we were unable to extend our stay there. We were pleasantly surprised and reception were more than helpful. The room was clean and tidy although the bed was too soft for me and I woke up with awful back ache both mirnings. We ate in both restaurants and enjoyed both equally but do think that £4.30 is expensive for a bottle of still water when tap water isn't offered in Morgans.
I can highly recommend Rachel at the Spa I had 2 treatments with her during our stay and she was both knowledgable and friendly. My partner played golf and thoroughly enjoyed it, I think the Birdie on the 18th hole of the Old Course made his day .
Overall we enjoyed our stay the only negatives are the WIFI charges and no lifts for those with heavy suitcases.

Thanks for your constructive feedback; glad you enjoyed your Spa treatments. We do provide complementary wifi in all the public areas, so I apologise if you weren't made aware of this. We should also have offered to help with your luggage; sorry we forgot this time. Hope we see you again soon.

We had booked the lakeside cottages and were given one with a double bed which we rejected and ended up being asked an extra 10 per night for a king. It was clean and well fitted and kitted but a little old fashioned ((70s) and dark. The heated towel rails were a bonus. If you are elderly this is not the place for you. There are lots of steps and walks on uneven pathways. We had difficulty finding the hotel entrance. Certainly very charming and olde worlde....steeped In history with a fully functioning church on site. The staff were very nice. We ate in Morgans. The breakfast buffet was good and dinner was ordinary. I ate a la carte and it was fine but he ate the daily specials and the portions were small and the cod mediocre. We were seated right beside another couple while other tables still had the remains of meals. A manager finally cleared them. Breakfast service was way better. They cater to lots of weddings and coach tours and generally it was smoothly run. Just not my cup of tea. It's a bit dated. We were really there for the golf course. This was disappointing too. Lots of greens located beside the next tees making for danger and 8 and 9 run along the main drive to the hotel . No wonder they offer you complimentary insurance for windscreen damage. The golf staff were all very nice. It's very very busy. There is a gym which is very well equipped and a pool ...these can get crowded as the club has local members. I see from other reviews that the ratings are higher. Personally I would prefer to pay more for the Celtic Manor and have some modern elegance and class as well as a better golf course.

Room Tip: Lakeside cottages are quiet. Worth the extra for the peace and quiet despite the little walk.

Many thanks for your kind comments about our staff, and also the Marriott breakfast. As you say, St Pierre's history certainly adds to it's charm. Glad you enjoyed the peace and quiet in your Lakeside room; we do provide a 'taxi' service to the hotel if requested too. Hope to see you again soon.

Short (2 days) business trip to this area of Wales. Beautiful hotel & grounds. An old Welsh castle/manor with an incredible golf course setting. Stayed in one of the cottages away from the hotel proper. Was nice and quiet, but you had to hike over to the hotel for a bite or drink or to use the work out room. Room was nice, if not a bit dated. Mini fridge did not work. Carpet in room was old. I would note that the plug in the bathroom for razors was way too close to the shower/tub - and NOT a GFI plug.

Hotel was very nice in a great setting. Work out room looked great as did the pool area but I did not get the opportunity to use them much. Golf course looked amazing but did not have the opportunity to play on it. Dinner was good in the Zest. I would note that the hotel is a few kilometers outside of Chepstow. You really need a car to enjoy this property/location.

The hotel itself was well run, efficient. Check in and out was simple, although the computers were down and did not recognize the Marriott member's account. Would recommend this property for business, weekend getaway, touring the Welsh countryside or just a round of golf.

Glad you had a good time with us; thanks for the positive feedback. The golf course and grounds certainly do make a perfect setting for the hotel, don't they. Hope to see you again soon; hopefully you'll get time to use the gym and golf course next time.

Stayed one night in the old part of the building although this was a modern extension wing. Can get busy with wedding parties but not disturbed by the noise. Great room, clean and cozy but the matress was a bit too soft for my taste. Ice bucket for wine provided in the room and an ice machine in the corridor but oddly, no wine glasses in the room. Breakfast delivered to the room for a £3.00 tray charge. Excellent food at the Zest Restaurant - informal and not too expensive (£12-£15 mains and £30 for Presecco). All the staff were friendly and helpful. The pool was good but not very deep. Very warm Jacuzzi and sauna and steam rooms. Very good selection of equipment in the Gym.

If you are from outside of the UK, then this hotel has all the charm you'd expect from a hotel on the British countryside. Hotel is an old manor (13th/14th century?) from the outside and is very much intact (probably did considerable renovation at some point), but from the inside, it is completely modernized with small hints of olden times. The lobby and lounge area is beautiful and great if you want to read a book or just have some peace. The in-house bar fills up with golfers at night, and they are a great crowd to strike up a conversation with. Also the breakfast is amazing!
