“A Special Birthday at Christmas”
Reviewed January 24, 2013 via mobile

A fantastic location by the banks of the Tay. On a cautionary note, TomTom think the hotel is in Birnham.
We had three rooms booked on the Christmas Package to celebrate a Christmas Birthday. First class attention from the staff and good choice of food. Thanks our waiter for helping with a group photo and the restaurant 'choir' when the birthday cake was brought to the table. Two of our group tried the Clay Pigeon shooting and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Everyone had a great time.

Thank you for your amazing review of your Christmas and Birthday stay at Hilton Dunkeld. We are overjoyed you had a great stay and I have passed your feedback on to all our team. If you use the postcode PH8 0AG for a TomTom it will direct you to the hotel. Hope to see you again soon for another wonderful stay.
Kindest Regards
Hilton Dunkeld

This hotel is in a beautiful place just next to the river Tay. The dining and bar areas are lovely with open fires, and the bedroom and bathroom were nicely decorated and clean. The staff were very helpful, especially the young man in the spa as well as all the waiting staff. The swimming pool, gym and sauna facilities are great. And the food was very good, as well as their wine. However, given that they charge about £100 per night (and more) for a b&b, there could be some improvement. Some of the furniture in the room as well as some of the corridors could do with refurbishment. The view from my room was of a car park, which was ok as I came for work, but would be very disappointed if I came for a holiday break. Also, there was no kettle and tea and coffee in my room, so I had to ask for it. That said, it arrived within half an hour and had great selection of unusual herbal and fruit teas.

Thank you for your review and the kind words regarding our team. We are currently decorating the corridor by reception and we predict this will enhance the guest’s arrival experience. All our standard double rooms face the back of the hotel to the wood lands and if you would like a front facing room towards the river or gardens a guest room plus or deluxe room is required. We do hope you will return for a leisure stay and we will look forward to welcoming you back.

My husband and I visited here for a two night break - a christmas gift from our sons. When we arrived the temperature outside was -4 but inside the hotel was toasty warm. The room was very comfortable with lovely fluffy towels and toilettries (a weakness of mine). I enjoyed a swim in the pool. Dinner was lovely, very well presented and roasting hot. Breakfast was help yourself and make your own toast (I prefer when the toast is brought to you) but no problem to make ourselves. Again everything was hot and well prepared. The staff were all exceptionally friendly and nothing was too much problem for them. The location of this hotel though is truly amazing, peaceful a true get away but close to Pitlochry, Perth and of course Dunkeld. A walk along the river is a must both directions equally beautiful. From the minute we drove through the gates and saw the deer (a wild herd that are nearly always there), a walk up the river, beautiful food, all in all a most relaxing time.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great, location is in the middle of nowhere so noise not a problem.

Although the hotel is going through a reburbishment programme, it requires a lot of investment to bring it back to a Hilton standard even though it is a different style of hotel from the standard type of Hilton hotel. The staff were wonderful, very friendly and effecient and currently the main life blood of the hotel. The buffet breakfast was very average, NOT of a Hilton standard. The overall fabric of the hotel was very tired and looked like it will never regain it 4 star status. We had tried to bokk into this hotel on a few occasions before but were unlucky, however we were very pleased when we managed to book 2 rooms for a 3 day break, pity we were disappointed. There was also confusion when checking out and the staff were not very helpful or understanding as I had booked direct with hilton.co.uk and had understood that I had paid the full amount with my credit card, but the staff explained that there system was different and they had only received the first nights charge as a deposit and I was expected to pay the balance. Not very understanding when I showed them my booking form which stated that my total charges were £518.58 and my credit card had been charged, but they insisted that I should check my credit card statement as I would only have been charged for one night. Pity a customer like myself does not carry an up to date credit card statement showing all my charges over the last 2 weeks!!!!!!

Thank you for your review. We are thrilled our staff made your stay memorable and the service you received was superb. The 3 for 2 offer’s first night accommodation is required at the time of booking and the balance to be paid on departure. I am unable to retrieve your confirmation letter sent to yourself and apologise this was not made clear on your confirmation letter. I can confirm only the deposit was taken at the time of booking and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further issues. A refurbishment is taking place at present to enhance the corridor by reception and we foresee the completion by the end of next week.

This hotel offers very comfortable accommodation at reasonable special offer rates. The reception on arrival was poor, on departure fine. The cooked breakfast wasn't hot. We will however book this hotel again regardless of our less than completely positive comments.

A warm greeting on arrival, received our keys for our adjoining rooms and had to return to firnd someone to unlock the internal door...no biggie but sort of wrong foots you from the off.
Afternoon tea was okay, the sandwich fillings overall felt really disappointingly cheap though, canned tuna, really? My hub and I had tea and coffee, nothing was offered for our four and a half year old, so we ordered an orangina, £3.50...eek!
Back to the room, faces onto rear carpark so you have to have the blinds closed all the time, if an opaque film was put over the bottom half of the window customers could enjoy the lovely trees on the rear banking and some welcome natural light instead, why has nobody thought to consider the customer more and do this? The room was very tired (15 and 17 I believe) however they were a good size, very comfortable, lovely big tv and most importantly, immaculate!
Dinner both nights (Christmas eve and late afternoon Christmas Day) were okay, a decent standard, but we hoped for more. On Christmas Day we were looked after by a young waiter, Scott. He was a superstar, genuinely caring about his job, checking up on his section with warmth and care. We were a little tricky to manage as I took exception (politely) to our son being offered the regularly kids fare for his Christmas dinner, and scott took off to the kitchen to return with the news that indeed, chef said it was okay for the little man to have the fish like his mum too....good customer service points there.
On both occasions however we were obliged to wait a very long time after our reservation times for our tables to be ready. On each occasion no drinks were offered, so we ended up buying them for ourselves at the bar (also having to explain to the lovely bar man how to make a kir). It maybe sounds niggly but its these wee things that stay with guests, replace negative with positive and you always have customers onside.
Breakfasts were very good, actually the best meals we had truth be told, again lovely staff both front of house and kitchen. Another niggle (get me), the high traffick areas leading to and fro the kitchen, coffee stations etc, the carpet is behind worn and utterly filthy, creates an awful impression. Quick fix would surely be to lay some rubber backed industrial runners over, or indeed set into, the offending areas..just a suggestion instead of having to fit an eywateringly expensive new carpet?
The common areas are charming, cosy and full of happy dogs and woodsmoke, bliss. The grounds are beautiful, such lovely walks, amazing location.
The pool was good, not busy, reasonably warm too.
All in all I would still come back to the hotel, you have a great friendly staff who genuinely care about the guests, pretty rare that...oh and of course because Santa visited at my sons table and gave him a present and a hug on Christmas Day. Memories are made of this ;)
