A wonderfull venue for a short break, within easy reach of both Glasgow & Edinburgh along with the West Coast towns of Inverary and Oban. Dunoon itself has ample facilities including restaurants. Hotel itself has a lovely loc ation being situated overlooking the Firth of Clyde towards Gourock and is literally 10 seconds from the ferry. Staff are all friendly and the hotel manager, Charles, goes out of his way to ensure your stay is enjoyable. Room was very clean and warm (important in Scotland in October!).

We enjoyed every minute of our stay at the Hunters Quay. The cleanliness and ambience was superb and the views spectacular. The choice of food at dinner was limited but enjoyable. The breakfasts were fantastic and the staff most helpfull.
My family and I (6 aduts and 1 child) would have no hesitation in staying there again.

Thank you Hunters Quay Hotel

Our experience was similar to a previous reviewer. We went for 3 nights. The hotel is very tastefully decorated and the breakfasts are excellent. But ...

We had a similar experience trying to get drinks in the bar. Almost impossible at times. The restaurant has a set menu of 3 starters and 3 main courses. Because the chef is Indian, 1 of each course is an Indian dish. Now, as it happens, they were probably the best items on the menu but if you do not like Indian food ... or don't want Indian every night then your options are quickly restricted. Another main course is mustard mash with seasonal vegetables and a fish. Same basic plate every night but with a different fish. Can someone tell me where swede and turnips are 'seasonal vegetables; in July? Again, if you don't like fish, your options are further restricted.

Checking out was chaotic and my bill was wrong. Charles, the Manager, actually muttered to himself 'let's play Fawlty Towers'! If they remade the series, then Hunter's Quay would be a rich source of material.

As a B&B my only comment would be that the breakfast waitresses are part time and clearly have had no training in service. That apart, it is excellent. It is very convenient for the ferry. Room 4 has good views across the water. Alas, the rest of the offering is sorely lacking. Despite a couple of e-mails I still have not resolved the bill. The discrepancy is to the hotel's advantage: we have yet to agree how much because of the chaotic bar accounting process (items are written in Charles' notebook and transcribed manually .... and it does not work).

Dont be fooled by the website. it paints a stunning hotel but Hunters Quay is a B & B really.

The welcome, strange, not even a "Hello and Welcome", from the owner, but some strange conversation relating to our booking and cancellation of a room for my mother in law, which I still dont know what it was about. This is your first impression, and I could have easily just turned and walked out at this point.

We decided to have a drink in the bar at 4.30pm, eventually we managed to get a drink, and then were told the bar does not open to 6pm??? No atmosphere, getting a second drink we were told that only Charles, the owner, can serve alcohol and he has gone out !

Another couple entered the bar and were told they could not have a drink, again as Charles was the only person allowed to server, they left.

Charles, I would suggest some nice background music, lighting, and a friendly staff to check if you would like anything.

We decided to eat in the restaurant on the first night, as the website portrays the 'Hotel' to have an outstanding restaurant. At 6.30pm they still did not have that nights menu.

Eventually after asking a number of times, we got the menu before 7pm, and as we had a 6 year old, we wanted to eat as soon as possible, but no, dinner is not served until 7.30pm. Eventually we managed to get some food for out son, but were left with the impression that the 'hotel' were put out having to cater for our son.

Dinner.... Dont bother, honestly there are nicer restaurants nearby. I had steak, very very very average cooking. Don't expect to be blown away with the quality or standard of cooking or service. However the wine list was extensive, and obviously reflects Charles's interest in wine.

I am pleased to see that the Guest Information in the rooms 'allows' an informal Dress Code for dinner!

Breakfast on the other had is excellent, beautiful bacon, eggs done to perfection. Hunters Quay should ditch the dinner concept and stick to a the breakfast. The dining room has the most stunning view, but the room itself is lacking a little ambience. Just having Classic FM gently on in the background to break the total silence.

Breakfast on a Sunday starts at 8am, not at 7.30am as detailed in the Guest Information in the rooms. The Guest Information folders are still promoting Hogmanay 2009, attention to detail again missing.

To sum it up, Its clear that the owners have a taste for nice decoration, as the overall 'hotel' is very nice. They obviously have an interest in wine, as their wine list shows, but they really dont have any interest in you, the paying customer. Service is poor, no attention to you the customer, and dont ask for anything outside the owners eating / drinking times.

Hunters Quay has been awarded a Trip Advisor 2010 award, I actually dont know why it has, maybe due to the reviews on the site, a little premature for this reward just yet.

Finally, not really a child friendly hotel, more child tolerant !

We stayed here for 3 nights, beautiful room Thistle Room, wonderful food, lovely host and staff, The hotel is situated next to the western ferry terminus so handy. Dunoon is a lovely place and the surrounding areas are out of this world. I had never been before but was so impressed we purchased a holiday home there.

We booked all 10 rooms in the Hotel and stayed at the end of October 2009, 1 week after it was taken over. We are a group of 40 - 60 yr olds who enjoy a really nice hotel and this was it.
From the minute we arrived to when we left Charles could not do enough for us. It was one big house party. Rooms elegant and comfortable and food Fantastic.
We really enjoyed it and cannot wait to go again

We have just returned from a superb 2-night stay at this wonderful hotel, having crossed the water for a wedding. We didn't know much about the hotels in the area, so we were guided by other reviews. and we certainly weren't disapppointed. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, the rooms were comfortable, and the food was excellent. And the views! We're looking forward to returning here to explore the area some more, and we'd highly recommend it..
