“Only Option, But Worth The Extra Travel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2014

We visited after booking at the last minute due to The Royal Tattoo in Edinburgh and festivals in Glasgow. There were no other available rooms! Unsure of ferry schedules, we took the drive along Gare, Long, Fyne, Eck and Holy Lochs through two national parks. The ride was wonderful.

Upon arrival, the proprietor-owner was friendly and helpful, and the pub downstairs was warm and friendly. The free goblet of merlot was nice, too.

Breakfast was quite good.

We had an incredible view of the Clyde from our room, and the ferry terminal was less than 100 yards/meters form the hotel.

The ferry was VERY overpriced at 20 Pounds for a one way auto trip, and I thought the hotel was a bit overpriced at 111 Pounds.

Welcome back all who read my reviews. My Polski Princess decided to stay in the UK this trip and booked this hotel from the view it portrays in the pictures however a view doesn,t make a good visit. Like Heather M, we arrived to not only a deserted reception but the door was locked and we couldn't get in ??
We eventually were let in by a very uninterested and scruffy chap, he was uninterested and far from friendly. The room was dirty, the remote for the tv did not work and we had noisy neighbours until 01.00.
No restaurant and a bar that opens from 16.00 - 21.00 was far from acceptable. We went to the hotel next door where the bar was fully stocked, friendly and inviting. We ate there and the food was reasonably priced and huge portions. I wish i could remember the name of it because it made up for the disappointment of the Hunters Quay Hotel.
The Duvet was dirty and paint on the bathroom floor was horrible.
When we went to breakfast there was no breakfast menu and very, very little choice,we were told its just a cooked breakfast but not what?? No toast rack and no plates you carried your self made toast from the two economy priced toasters.
I asked the girl for poached eggs on toast for 2 people, i got 2 poached eggs on 1 slice of toast for ONE person. I asked for one tea and one coffee the coffee arrived first which i was drinking and the girl asked if the tea was for me too!!! My Princess was not amused. We shared the 2 eggs on 1 toast and left, i complained to the chap who couldnt wait to take my £120.00 but no apology he asked if we wanted another breakfast but we had left the dining room, packed the car and waiting to go by then.
The standards re very poor and desperately needs a refurbishment of rooms and staff.

Amazing views of the surrounding countryside and water. Very quiet beautiful rooms which all have great views. The breakfast was excellent. To get there it's a ferry and vice versa , to go to Loch Lomond and back you can have a long drive through beautiful countryside or take the ferry. Will definitely go back sometime.

Room Tip: All rooms face either the water or garden or in our case we had a bit of both

Despite the description on their web site, this is not a 4 star hotel, and does not have a restaurant.
First impression of the hotel is that it is in a beautiful location, and looks lovely. However, after entering a deserted reception area, we rang a bell and were greeted unenthusiastically by a man in filthy clothing. He directed us to our second floor room with no offer of any help with luggage. When we asked aboutnthe restaurant we were told there wasn't one and directed us to the run down hotel next door. The room was in the attic at the back of the hotel with a side window, and was rather dingy. The paper was coming off the ceiling and the bathroom had black mould. The reception, breakfast and bar areas of the hotel are lovely, however both times we went into the bar there was no one serving even though it was supposed to be open until 9am. The quality of the breakfast was very good, but the service was rather slow. Not an experience we will be repeating!

Room Tip: Possibly worth paying extra to one of rooms at the front. Be prepared to drive or get a taxi to find...

Dear Guest,
I am sorry you felt obliged to address such crafty remarks. It is unfortunate that you waited a full two days until the last minute upon departure to mention your disappointment and to ask for a discount on the price of your stay. It is a known practice known to the hotel trade - we can only reject such a request because if a room does not satisfy you when first moving in, it is easy to ask the reception desk for another room! Sadly, you did not but rest assured that we have addressed the small issues as we only wish our guests to have the very best
Regarding the restaurant, it is clearly and expressly stated in the website that it is currently not open.
You insinuated that my clothes I was wearing were "filthy" (your own words) - I was I doing some gardening when you arrived! This is a small, privately-owned hotel and surely you must agree that the gardens need constant attention in order to keep them beautiful to match our unrivaled, spectacular setting - it is the first time in 25 years that I have had such a personal and unjustified complaint addressed to me !

Sincerely yours.

Jean-Laurent Cormerais de Germond.

Just a few feet from the Gourock car ferry, this hotel is surprisingly well appointed for the price. The bar and lounge appear to be out of use for now and there is no evening meal on offer, but the furnishings and decor are of a high standard. Our room on the top floor was very comfortable and spacious and had views over the Clyde. This also meant we heard the foghorns early in the morning! The only negative point about the room was the ceiling paper which was beginning to peel at the seams.
The breakfast choice was entirely adequate - cereals, fresh fruit salad and a full cooked breakfast, all of which were very tasty and well presented. Hunters Quay is a short drive from Dunoon where there are a few restaurants.

We stayed in this hotel last night as a last minute getaway, the hotelier is lovely, room clean and well furnished, with a really comfy bed. Worth paying a bit extra for a sea view as you can see right across the Clyde and over to the hills. Breakfast was well cooked and you could tell that care had been taken to select nice ingredients. One word of warning though and just in general regarding hopping over in the ferry from Gourock to Dunoon, you can only buy a return ticket at £22.50 for car and passenger, so you either commit to driving the long way there and back or take the ferry there and back, or else you're down £11! You could pay on the boat but that's dearer, just go to the newsagents on either side.

my husband and myself have just returned from an overnight stay at this hotel. It was clean and well kept but this is the first time I have stayed in a hotel of this quality and they didn't serve dinner. When we booked my husband asked if we needed to book a table for dinner and he was told no and was told the restaurant was next door but definitely not making it clear he meant another hotel further along the promenade and that they themselves didn't provide dinner. I am sorry I would call this a guest house. In the morning breakfast was ok but no real cooked choice apart from a Scottish breakfast, with no offer of salmon/kippers etc. It was a comfortable stay but not memorable and please don't get caught out with the bar closing at 9pm ...... that is if you can find someone to serve you a drink ,I'm afraid we gave up in the end!!!
