On the plus side:
Value for money
Lots of character
Very friendly, helpful staff
Excellent location
Views
Quiet
Accommodating at short notice
Good breakfast

On the less great side:
The rooms and, to a lesser extent, the public spaces are tired and could seriously do with refurbishment. So if you're looking for state-of-the-art facilities in the rooms, this is not your place. But if a trip back in time is your idea of fun, and you don't mind your grandeur a bit frayed around the edges, this place represents excellent value and a friendly place to drop anchor for a night or two.

Room Tip: Room 2 is rather dark and has no view.

Having visited before, we couldn't wait to come back, especially the kids. This time we came during June, with the weather a bit warmer than February, although the weather is really secondary, as the hotel, staff and food are more than enough. Once again the view as you come off the ferry is magnificent. The hotel towers across the river and looks beautiful. It is also excellently located for travelling around the highlands and for connections to Glasgow. The room was once again lovely, very spacious for our family and my son loved being able to look across the river hunting for submarines and wildlife. Every morning a hearty breakfast with a wide choice set the day up nicely, with the personal touch added and definitely a feeling of anything we can do to assist from the staff and management. If you are unsure what to do each day, the staff are there to help and make suggestions. Walking up Pucks Glen was a great adventure for the children. We ate in Ghillies Bar most evenings within the hotel. There is a wide and varied menu, and the children portions were great. Again the service was wonderful and you are left feeling very special. In cannot recommend the Royal Marine highly enough, You really wont be disappointed staying here and we are already looking forward to returning, hopefully later this year - a great holiday and break for the kids and parents.

!my husband and I decided on a weekend in Scotland for 38th Wedding Anniversary. We chose to fly to Glasgow and hire a car and just drive until we we found somewhere nice to stay. We wanted something traditional as we are well travelled and are fed up with the usual Generic modern hotels. We found ourselves going on the ferry to Dunoon. It was getting late and we were getting a bit worried about finding somewhere. We couldm believe when we got off the Ferry and straight across the road was this amazing Tudor style Hotel. We took a chance and went in to have a drink and get a feel for the place before we decided to check if they had a room. As soon as we walked in we loved the atmosphere . It had a really grand staircase. You don't see many like that these days. We went into the main bar and had a drink The batman was very nice and chatty. We were told they had a room and we checked in for the night. We Were given a lovely room with a fantastic view . We were delighted so far. Then we had a lovely meal in their Ghillies Restaurant. Our bed was very comfortabl. One of those big chunky wooden beds.. Breakfast was very good plenty of choice. We enjoyed it so much we booked in a second night and toured the local area which is really beautiful. The proprietors Martin and Shirley Gregg couldn't have been more helpful about places we could visit. We probably won't be back to Scotland for a while but we would definitely recommend this hotel. The service was excellent and the building alone is awesome.. Definitely unique !

Having read the reviews decided this was the hotel for me and my son on a two night break, taking advantage of the 2 for 1 offer on the hotel website.
The reviews on the hotel being dated are a true account but there's loads of character in the hotel.
The location is right opposite the Dunoon car ferry, our room had a fabulous view over the sea and beyond, it was great watching how busy the ferry gets!!
The room (24) was very clean, bathroom a bit in need of a touch up, yet very spacious, the shower was warm yet not very powerful, beds were very clean and changed daily and the room was a great size for 3 people giving my son loads of room to play.
The staff were extremely friendly from the receptionist when we arrived,(handing us a map of the area and places of interest), the waitress for breakfast, the staff in gillies to the receptionist when we left, even the chef came out to say hello to my son.
The breakfast were really nice, filling and very tasty, the coffee was superb!! The tables all had a view across the sea which was a wonderful touch to our stay.
Gillies bar food was great, good price, piping hot and really tasty and the staff finished it off really well, with great friendly service.
Overall would definitely stay again. Great places to go are Pucks Glen and we found an awesome little beach on lock Eck called jubilee point.

Room Tip: Room 24, great sea view, a double and single bed with large bathroom and get table 3 for breakfast.

If you don't mind the place being a bit dated, this is a lovely hotel with fantastic views from the front rooms. We particularly enjoyed visiting the nearby botanic gardens. The hotel is about a mile from Dunoon with a great walk along the front.

Room Tip: It's worth paying a little extra for the sea view rooms

stayed there overnight on a golf weekend with 11 others, not the most modern but the staff could not do enough nothing was a problem , would definitely recommend this hotel , it is right in front of where you get the ferry and as dunoon is not that big it is only 5 min in a cab to the centre

Stayed here for one night and was warmly welcomed and checked in with minimum fuss. The room was light, very spacious and simply furnished with classic furniture. An electric convector heater was provided and already switched on which was rather nice. The bed was really comfortable and made for a great sleep, whilst the view out over the Holy Loch/Firth of Clyde was spectacular. However, the room was also in desperate need of refurbishment - secondary glazing over rotten window frames; worn furniture; chipped and discoloured paintwork. Very quickly, it becomes clear that actually the whole hotel is in need of major refurbishment; but that will truly amount to millions of pounds, rather than thousands. It is therefore really commendable that the owners can still keep the rooms very clean and make the stay comfortable.

I had my evening meal in Ghillies Bar, where the food was fresh, served piping hot, with tasty, generous portions and good value for money. Whilst the service was really friendly and efficient.

Breakfast was served in a wonderfully sunny room, overlooking the loch, and was generous, fresh and well cooked.

You may have gathered that I had a comfortable night's stay and liked the Royal Marine and the friendly staff who delivered really good service. However, don't expect it to be modern and pristine. It's just not that kind of place.

Room Tip: Overlooking the loch
