My husband and I were on our mini-moon, just married days before we found what looked like a quaint little hotel. We checked in and were shown to a sea view room. It seemed nice at first, Sandra seemed reasonably friendly and gave us advice on where to eat. The decor was very dated and slightly musty smelling. On entering the breakfast room, there were counterfeit items for sale from their trips to Thailand, strange for a rated hotel, but no harm to us here.
The room was comfortable enough, nice views and nice garden.
Our major complaint - and main reason for a poor rating - came when Sandra quite aggresively insisted that we leave our room key behind whilst out for the night. We did so the first night we went out. The next day she insisted again, so being a little suspicious, my husband set our laptop to video whilst we were out (no cleaning, extra tea/towels etc were needed - we said we didnt want any). Quite shockingly, our room was entered while we were out (yes, you're on video I'm afraid...). Understandably this made us feel very uncomfortable. We requested breakfast to our room the next day, when it was brought to our room (continental; oatcakes, cheese, ham + tea - nice enough but small and hardly hearty) I opened the door to receive the tray but was almost pushed aside by Sandra who came straight into the room (where my husband was half naked in bed) and were then warned " don't get it on the sheets". I felt like we were treated like messy children and quite offended at the intrusion of our privacy. Again...
Our stay was ok, though I felt very watched and uncomfortable staying there. Will definitely not be returning.

Room Tip: Request a sea view, and if possible dont leave your key behind - unless you're comfortable with...

A fantastic hotel with a view to die for-we live in the lake district so are used to good views but this was something else.
Our room was comfortable, the whole place was spotlessly clean and breakfast excellent.
Matt and Sandra were so welcoming and friendly and they know the area inside out so you are never short of ideas on where to go,what to do and places to eat.Nothing was too much trouble.
Our actual bedroom didnt have a view but was right next door to the residents lounge looking out over the waterfront. There is a lovely garden to sit in and enjoy the sunshine which we were very lucky to get. Also lovely walks just along the promenade.
We couldnt recommend this hotel highly enough and would love to return.

I read ‘very disappointed’ review and could only conclude we were staying in 2 different hotels, which is entirely possible as 3 guest houses and St Ives sit side by side on the waterfront, all with fantastic sea views.
Matt and Sandra have a wealth of knowledge regarding the local district and Matt cooks a fantastic breakfast
The beds are comfortable, the views great and the décor is a nice mix of Victorian and modern. Being 5 minutes’ walk from the centre of town it was great to leave the car behind and stroll in for dinner and a drink without the worry of how we were getting home.
This is the second time I have stayed at St Ives, in both cases after a 2 week driving holiday of Scotland, England and Wales where I stayed in a mixture of B&B’s, 5 star hotels and mid-range budget hotels. St Ives tops them all for hospitality, comfort, location and quality of breakfast. I would definitely recommend St Ives and look forward to my next stay with Matt and Sandra.

Very friendly reception from owners Sandra & Matt. The view from the hotel is to die for, especially
as seen from the upstairs lounge. the room I had was spotless and the E-Suite bathroom was always very clean and neat.
If you like a good hearty breakfast, this is the place to stay. Nothing is ever to much trouble, if you don't fancy a fryup for breakfast, there are alternatives you can choose. There are parking spaces in front of the hotel.

A little tricky to find but on a nice spot on the water. Landlady was very friendly and helpful and gave suggestions for restaurants etc. Room was nice and comfortable and breakfast was delicious. Would definitely recommend this B&B as a good stopover in Dunoon. Only comment was that wifi was really slow.

Sandra and Matt couldn't have been more helpful on our January trip for a family funeral. We arrived in the dark after a 400 mile drive and were given a warm welcome. Sandra suggested The Braes as a good place to eat and it was - twice!
The hotel was lovely and warm, the room nicely decorated and the bed comfy. The lounge is gorgeous with a high ceiling and views over the Clyde.
Breakfast was delicious and beautifully cooked and Sandra made up a flask for our return journey. We were able to come and go during the day to get changed and Matt even lent my husband some cufflinks!!
When we left the weather was deteriorating but Sandra gave us useful travel advice. We would definitely stay at the St Ives again (but would prefer not to be in January!)

We booked a superior room , what climb to the top floor, need a rest when you get there.Great view from the room , only downside was that the tv is too small for the size of room. The step into the toilet is a bit high (no handrail) maybe 2 steps would be better????????? Also kettle is under the tv.Good breakfast. BAR CLOSED. Owner very knowledgeable of local area.

Room Tip: If you like climbing stairs book a superior sea view room.
