“Value for money”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

Just returned from the Selborne Hotel on a weekend trip with Harry Shaw (Coventry). Our room was very clean, excellent sea views. Food good, cooked breakfasts were great. Overall very good value for money. Thanks to Andy (Bar), we had a few laughs. Glyn the driver was fantastic.

Week long stay with alfa coach trips entertainment was ok the accordian player fab nancy bloody awful, bar closed all day only open of a night if your over 65 you will enjoy it otherwise boring. Waitress service awful had to wait 40 minutes between starter an main and its all microwaved!! Quite liked Dunoon although a bit run down . Hotel needs redecorating all hallways are filthy and very smelly as you walk past the table tennis area Drains ?? If yoh cant manage stairs dont book there as the lift is on one end of the building and you have to walk through miles of hallways . Reminded me of the film the shining scarey !!!

Room 202 was nice& very clean/also had a hairdryer! could have done with a duvet on the bed all we had was a sheet and a blanket and a cover that resembled a curtain. Again the bathroom was clean and had a heating rail the shower was nice lots of hot water. The view from the room was great saw quite a few ships sailing up and down the firth including three Royal Navy. The corridor to the hotel was tatty looking though and could do with a refurbish or at least a paint it also had a bitter smell to it. The breakfast was perfectly fine and the waitress on the 2nd and 3rd day of my stay was very attentive. The reception staff were great and gave us a warm welcome. All things weighed up good value for money and would go again. If you having B&B like me/hubby would recommend 51st state for dinner great place to go.

Ok, this hotel is not the newest, facilities are ageing and decor a bit dated. Our room was a triple which was adequate in size and 3 standard single beds in the room. Bedding is sheets and blankets and I must admit, a quilt would be preferred to the blanket.

Our room had 2 large windows facing the rear of the hotel and they were frosted glass so the room was quite dark all the time. Being on the ground floor, we needed the frosted glass for privacy.

A small portable tv and kettle in the room ( not used)

Bathroom was large with a shower cubicle.

We arrived at 7.30pm and found it strange that we had to walk through the restaurant to get to our room. Unfortunately, it was ver busy and we felt quite embarrassed pulling our luggage past numerous tables when people were eating. My suitcase bumped a few tables so I made a few apologies to other guests for imposing on their meal.

All this set aside, the staff at this hotel are efficient, helpful and attentive in all areas. The waitress at breakfast was lovely and served our table quickly, the bar staff were friendly, reception staff are helpful and the manager always takes time to make you welcome.

This is not a high graded hotel.. 2 or 3 stars and when reviewing hotels, this has to be recognised. I I like this one as the rooms are clean, towels are fresh and room temperatures are adequate and Staff genuinely care about your stay.

Entertainment is planned in the hotel but we didn't really hear any of the performers during our stay on this occasion. My little one enjoyed the table tennis table and made a few Canadian friends this trip.

Food quality, well breakfast was nice and the full scottish breakfast was sampled. Pity no poached or boiled eggs now on the menu as I'm not a big fan on fried food in the morning.

Value for money... Well yes it is for our needs.

tip.. Get to the hotel early as parking is a problem outside. The car park has buses parked in the bays and we struggled to park near the hotel so a long walk with our luggage was encountered.

Maybe next year, we can obtain sea view to completely enjoy this hotel and sample more on offer.
We like this one and would recommend this for a short stay break in Dunoon.

Room Tip: Room 7 is on the ground floor, has 3 single beds. Access is via the dining room and a table tennis t...

stayed at the hotel with alfa holidays, nice position with views over the river clyde. our room was very nice and spacious, but the bathroom was very small, you could hardly turn around in it. gardens were well kept. it is well worth paying the extra for a sea view. food was very good and was always very hot and plentiful, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. entertainment was also very good, and had bingo each night, made even better by me winning £80. it was easy to walk into town along the promenade which was reached via the gardens, but the town is very small and not much there. we enjoyed our stay very much and would return

Room Tip: higher floors have better views. room 306 very good

The hotel is out dated. Members off staff can come into your room when your are sleeping. We had a member of staff who was off duty at the time and who was extremely drunk call both our rooms at 12 O'clock in the morning pestering us to go out when we refused he came up to one of the rooms and let himself in using a master key he got from the night porter. The room he entered had a couple with a small child in it who was sleeping. Our sister in-law was scared to go back to sleep in-case he came back in. As of yet we have not heard what disciplinary action has been taken if any. So whoever uses this hotel just be aware of who has access to your room when your out or in your bed and make sure you snib the door so no-one can enter when your room while your sleeping. There was no entertainment during the weekend the bar closed earlier than usual. Personally I would not recommend using this hotel to any-one.

Please accept our most sincere apologies that a member of staff entered your room late at night without authorisation and inebriated. This is the first time anything like this has every happened and I can assure you that it will be the last. The behaviour of this member of staff was unacceptable and he now no longer works for the company. We have sent you a full refund for the night you were disturbed which I trust you will accept as reasonable under the circumstances.

Our bar is advertised as being open from 5pm to 11pm which is the time when the majority of our guests have gone to bed. Final drinks orders can be taken just before 11pm if anyone wishes to stay in the bar until later. I am sorry that you did not see any of the entertainment however, the main arrival and departure days are Monday and Friday and therefore the attendance at the entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights is very poor. However, there was a full programme of entertainment on the Sunday evening but unfortunately you stayed for only 2 nights.

We have just returned from a coach trip to the Selborne Hotel with Alfa Travel. The hotel caters excellently for both coach tours and independent travellers. Ask for a sea-view room, the views are stupendous, better from the second and third floors than the first floor (you could be looking over the flat roof of the games room or restaurant and you don't get the full effect of the long lawned gardens from the first floor). The third floor is not accessible by lift. Our twin room was light, spacious and nice and quiet (being at the end of the hotel over the games room and away from the lift).
The staff are very pleasant, helpful and friendly. The Receptionists are knowledgeable about what to do and see in the area, ferry timetables etc. Service in the restaurant is friendly and efficient, the food is tasty, plentiful and piping hot. The fish for breakfast is cooked to order so you may have a few minutes to wait, but well worth it.
There are nice flat walks along the 'promenade' (accessible from the hotel's garden), one direction towards Dunoon (East Bay) and the other to the West Bay. Dunoon itself is quite small for shopping, so take the passenger ferry to Gourock, it only takes about 20 minutes and they run regularly till late.
Entertainment is available in the hotel each evening from 8pm when Bingo starts. Not being Bingo fans, we walked into the town and found a lovely little bar restaurant called The Braes, No.1 School Brae, up by the Church. The food looked marvellous but, having eaten in the hotel, we just had drinks, and were made equally welcome. During the daytime there is a lovely rooftop terrace from which to enjoy the views. We would then walk back to the hotel and enjoy the cabaret - with comedy interludes from the barman - hilarious!!
They certainly know how to keep the customers happy at this hotel. The drivers from Alfa Travel were very knowledgeable about the places we visited and gave us all the historical facts and kept us amused. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday.
