“Dated hotel”
Reviewed July 22, 2014

Good-sized rooms, but all terribly dated, desperately in need of upgrade. Corridors to rooms resemble a rabbit warren and the hotel lacked air-conditioning and had poor ventilation during recent hot spell. Appallingly slow restaurant service, both for dinner and at breakfast. Staff generally indifferent to customer needs, or rude.
Great location, with fantastic views across the Channel, especially during the Electrical storm! Close to Town centre also, but there must be better hotels available in Folkestone.
Such a shame - it has the potential to be very nice.

I worked at Dugeness Power Station some years ago and since then have always wanted to return to the south coast for a holiday. I couldn't get the Stade Court Hotel in Hythe that I really wanted and made do with the Clifton. I am a best Western account holder and have been for ten years now so I know what to expect from Best Western.
It was a pleasant looking hotel on the promenade overlooking the English Channel at Folkestone. The inside is let down by the appearence of the old fashioned double glazing that is well beyond its sell by date. The interspace between the glazing is not what you want to look at when your having breakfast or evening dinner.
The first night we tried dinner and they said that they only had a "Table De Hote" menu, but a full an Al a Carte menu would be available, lie number ). There was a choice of 4 main courses, none of which were appreciated by us. My 85 year old mother left her omlett saying it was too hard to chew,(that was a first for me). We had paid for breakfast so we ate in. Can't really complain appart from the lack of choise. As we had paid for a £10.95 breakfast, it was full Englis or Half Full English, or any other combination.
It took us three days to find a breakfast menu that said they did Haddock or Kippers but guess what when we asked they had none. Lie number 2.
Probably the worst part was that they get a lot of workers staying there and in general, they stay in the bar late and start wark earlier that holiday makers want to get up. So they make more noise when you don't want to hear it.
My conclusion is that this hotel falls far below the normal standars of a Best Western Hotel and the room charges for accomadation are based on a reutation they cannot work to.
Parking became another issue, as they charge an extra £1 per day, but if you move your car and you can't park when you get back (even after you've paid, tough.
Unless it's the only one, find somewhere else.

Room Tip: South facing rooms can be hot and humid. If they are full with workmen, it can be noisey late on an...

Booked the Best Western for my husband's 40th birthday after being let down by 2 other hotels in the area. It's a good old fashioned seaside hotel - not great looking from the outside but lovely inside and great location (10 mins walk to Rocksalt where we had dinner). Lovely double room, nice classic décor, comfy bed, bathroom ok but large, nice breakfast, but wonderful sea view the best thing! Overall a great stay.

So, this is a really old building with character but it like a maze so you must pay careful attention to your direction of travel!
The rooms were clean and tidy albeit a little hot in the humid weather of ours. The cleaner was like a whirlwind in the morning!
The staff were polite and helpful BUT...for £10.95 the breakfast was dire. I asked for poached egg on toast. I got one slice of bread, no butter on it, not cut in half to aid presentation and one cheap watery egg. Even with the full English that my partner had it was not worth the money especially as the ingredients were clearly cheap. Needless to say we did not have our breakfast in the hotel on the second day of our stay. I can't comment on the rest of the food but if breakfast is anything to go by; it won't be up to much.
The other downside was the shower. It was more of a trickle, so if your looking for a power shower to invigorate you; don't look here!

Not a bad hotel, but a lot of room for improvement. The rooms are big enough with comfortable beds and adequate bathrooms, but there is a strange, eerie atmosphere in the hotel. I've never seen more than half a dozen other people in there, and they are all of the retirement age.
The staff are quite friendly and helpful, but the same cd has been playing for the last 2 years. Constantly. Soft elevator music, which I think the staff are immune to now. The lifts are very small (2 x pax at the most), but there is free wifi throughout.
The general decor of the hotel is like a care home.
However, it is situated in a good location, close to the beach overlooking the sea, with a bar opposite and a 5 minute walk from town.
Generally it's a nice hotel, albeit a little outdated.

This is the second time we have stayed at this hotel to attend a function at the leas cliff hall.

Welcome to a Edwardian area. The rooms are comfortable though not that stylish but so clean. Despite it being a bit a rabbit warren of corridors to the rooms it is surprisingly quiet.
Plenty of staff about always friendly and helpful a wonderful addition to any hotel.

I have no problem either recommending this hotel. Jolly good location fab value. Just accept it for what it is perhaps tradional, but super clean and quiet.

This is an old hotel with a superb position. We had our dogs with us, en route for Spain and they were happy to accommodate. We were given a twin room on the 3rd floor with lovely views out to sea and over to France. But we also had a determined gull we named Arthur, as it refused to move from the flat roof outside our window and pecked at the window to be let in for hours. We did not dare leave the windows open over night in fear he would get into the room and it freaked us out a bit. And we really needed some ventilation in the room.

Hotel is rather shabby and the lift is the scariest ever. very small and completely carpeted. If you suffer from claustrophobia in any way, do not even consider using it as it was unbearable, even my dogs refused to get in it.

Internal bathroom which was clean but tired and it had a heated towel rail we could not turn off so it was unbearably warm.

As we had the dogs with us and we had driven for hours we had room service. The waiter was lovely and so helpful but the food was awful. I ordered ham and eggs and the ham was acceptable the but the eggs looked as if they had been fried the day before and kept in the overhead warmer - unbelievably dreadful. My partners ordered chicken Caesar salad, which looked wilted and he claimed it was the worst example ever. We made do with the chips and the bread ( which was lovely).Maybe Arthur already knew he was likely to get a lot of scraps although we didn't in case we never got rid of him.

The white wine was pleasant however, thank goodness.

We had not realised Breakfast started at 8.00am on a Sunday and therefore we had to miss it as we needed to be at the ferry for then- small mercies - we were happy to have paid for missing breakfast if the evening meal was anything to go by.

Parking was a bit of a nightmare- no secure parking and needed to pay £1 to to get a ticket to allow us to park in the street outside, when a space eventually became available. With a car full of goods not brilliant.

It was quite cheap but then they could not really expect to charge higher prices with the decor, food and lack of secure free parking.

As a one night stopover on a 4 day car journey it worked but as a holiday destination avoid.

Room Tip: just ask for one with a sea view
