“Warm welcome, excellent room, breakfast spot on”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2009

What more does one need in a B&B: a warm personal welcome from our hostess, a lovely comfortable room (with a good hot powerful shower in the spacious en suite bathroom), a tasty substantial breakfast? Well, Elm Crest delivers all those, plus it's easy to find, has plenty of parking, lovely gardens, tree lined environment less than a mile from Huddersfield town centre.

I stayed at Elm Crest for two nights last week and was highly impressed. When I arrived I was offered a piece of flapjack from the elegant sideboard and told that it was home-made, like the jam served at breakfast. The hosts are rightly proud of their home cooking and their warm welcome. My room was small, with a tiny wardrobe and a narrow single bed, but this was enough for me as I was travelling on my own. The hotel is on a quiet side road so there was no traffic noise. The public spaces, including the breakfast room, are nicely decorated with lots of traditional touches, but the room could do with a little tarting up, though it was very clean. There is free parking in a gravelled car park at the side. The free high-speed Internet access via wi-fi is good. I would have no hesitation in staying at Elm Crest the next time I am in Huddersfield and in recommending it.

Exceptionally helpful and friendly.
The room was small but had all you needed, shower good & water always hot when you need it.

It's an easy 15/20 min walk into town downhill but take a taxi back - from o/s station taxi cost £4ish depending on time of day etc but it will save the uphill walk. The B&B food is very good, the cakes/scones a real treat and all fresh/home made.

Martin & Ginette's store of dvds are avaliable to borrow if you have some time to kill in room as are various books. The loan of the A-Z was really helpful (to track down pubs)
In the town the square by the station is really coming on and looks to become a focal point soon, the wilson statue was surrounded by boards last week but looks a fitting site for an imposing work (judgng by what I could see over/through boards)

Talking about the classic station building and you'll have to go far to find not 1 but 2 pubs in a working station ! One at each wing...The Head of Steam is more established and "posher" good food (I had the spicy lamb chops) and wide range of proper beers. The Kings Head is a llittle "basic" but good beer and the home to lots of live music (looks to have a rockier line up than the jazz/blues on offer @ HoS)

Do yourselves a favour spend some time up north and stay at Elm Crest - for those business travellers get out of the Premier/TravelInn boxes a enjoy a better place.

I stayed here last Friday night. I was in a single room and it was tiny! However it was warm, clean and comfortable. I was dismayed to find breakfast does not start until 8.30am - the time I had to leave. However Ginette got up early and made me scrambled eggs on toast at 8am. Lovely jams, yougurt and a fresh fruit salad completed the line up. I would be very happy to stay here again.

If you want bland anonymity at a high price, this is not the place for you.

If you want great value for money for a single room, helpful service that goes way beyond normal, exceptional clean and warm room, loads of hot water and nice towel and an excellent breakfast with home made jams then this is the place for you.

The close to town centre location and great car park are a bonus.

I would highly recommend this place and can understand why everyone else has scored it 5 out of 5.

Although our visit to Huddersfield was not in the best of circumstances Ginette & Martin made it a very pleasant and warm stay. We wish all Guest Houses were this inviting and hospitable. It was one of the cleanest and well maintained B&B's that we have stayed in for a long time, the host's Ginette & Martin were always on hand and could not do enough for you, Where else would you get offered tea and home made cake's the second you walked in the door, and that's before you have even booked in. We found the Elm Crest by default due to the hotel we were looking at being fully booked, but were so glad we did. If you are looking for a Guest House that gives you a true British welcome and hospitality you cannot go wrong by choosing the Elm Crest, we shall definatley be booking again as and when we need to be in or around the Huddersfield area again

Having just returned from this hotel i thought i must let others know how good it is!
The owner was a first class example of how to treat a guest, all the fine touches of coffe and home made baking on arrival (and free of charge), chocolates in the room, and really helpfull advice on the area. The hotel itself is beautifully kept and the rooms large. The breakfast was huge and delishous.
5 stars from me!
