“What a transformation!”
Reviewed January 22, 2013

First visit to the Woodman for ages as the last one was really poor. Had been told that new owners were now running the place and boy are they going to town on a modernisation programme! The downstairs pub area has had a complete makeover and talking to some of the locals, that includes virtually a whole new team of staff! We were allocated a newly refurbished room which was simply excellent and very comfortable, best decribed as homely. Fixtures and fittings were very modern indeed. It was evident that the remaining bedrooms were being refurbished at the time of my visit. The meals were superb - enough choice on the menu with a few specials, but not too much to make it so difficult to choose. Good Yorkshire fayre at very competitive prices presented exactly the way they should be. Real ales too and perfectly cared for - what more can you ask for? The chef even came around to check that everyone was happy with their food. The staff were lovely and clearly enjoyed working there. As a well travelled tripadvisor user at home and abroad, I can safely say that this property will climb up the tripadvisor rankings ladder very quickly indeed and if you are thinking about going there, please do not hesitate - you might struggle to get in if you leave it too long! A great transformation and a place where I immediately felt at home. So glad it's close to home as I'll be back as often as I can. This place would be ideal for a wide spectrum of things - a romantic meal for 2 to a family party or wedding function. I understand the remaining renovations in the upstaires dining area will be completed very soon. It's safe to ignore any reviews before November 2012 as the place is in a different class now. So glad I went back to see for myself!
Thank you to all the staff there, please keep up the good work - see you soon!!

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room and if the budget runs to it, book a suite.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to write such a fantastic review regarding your recent stay with us at The Woodman Inn.
It is great to hear the major investment we are putting into the business is paying off and that you enjoyed your time with us! You are correct in saying that nearly 100% of the team only started in November/December so to hear we are looking after guests so well, so soon is a testimate to the team we now have in place.

We all hear at The Woodman look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Came across this pub following a visit to Castle Hill one Sunday afternoon and stopped off for Sunday lunch. Could not fault the meal one bit. The Prawn Cocktail starter which was delicious could have fed 2 people and the homemade tomato soup was a delight, to be followed by the most tender cooked Roast Pork lunch. Service was really good, great surroundings with a roaring log fire - could have stayed there all afternoon. Wish we had known about this place when we first started visiting Huddersfield 3 years ago when our children started at the university. A real unexpected gem.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding your recent visit with us at The Woodman Inn.
Its great to hear you enjoyed our new look Sunday menu which we only launched just after Christmas in an effort to give diners the opportunity to enjoy a traditional style roast!
Having a cosy log fire burning after a cold winters walk is also a great excuse for you to come see us again sometime soon!

Just come back from a 40th party at the woodman, excellent venue and memorable night. Staff were superb and nothing was too much trouble, most dedicated staff I have met in a long time. Food was fantastic, and breakfast was perfect. Would definitely visit again. Still a few rooms to update but soon to be completed, otherwise full marks.

Room Tip: Stay in the rooms upstairs.

Can not fault this place! There is no-one any more fussy than my wife and she is bowled over. The food was excellent; the room we stayed in was beautully presented with its gorgeous en-suite; crisp linen; lovely tioletries; and very clean.

ALL the staff were friendly and efficient from the moment we arrived til the tiem we left. The breakfast was superb - just what was needed before a long journey home.

We would have loved to have stayed longer and will definitely re-visit. We would recommend to anyone!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Yew.

Visited very recently for a family party - like SEDay (previous reviewer). The food was excellent, I had Yorkshire ham terrine followed by Roast Beef and superb veg and Yorkshire pudding, with raspberry creme brûlée to finish. The event organiser was quality. She met all of my sister's demands , not always easy ;-) hope she doesn't read this. This is a fabulous old inn with a great atmosphere and attentive staff. I visited one of the bedrooms and it is not huge but beautifully decorated with everything you would need for a comfortable stay. We are all hoping she had a 51 st at the same place. Well done the Woodman, you are new to to the inn but doing a fabulous job.

Room Tip: Choose one of the top floor bedrooms, of which there are 4,

Stayed here recently for a relatives 50th Birthday celebration and can thoroughly recommend it for a stay, meal or function. We had a warm welcome and stayed in one of the newly refurbished rooms which was very nice. Breakfast was excellent and the staff were attentive, hard working and friendly. Understand it is under new management and think they are doing a very good job. We wish them well.

Have just returned from celebrating my birthday and having read recent reviews, my expectations were measured........
But I'm delighted to report that we had a great time. Food and service were great, a simple Very Bristish menu with food well cooked and presented. Roast rump of beef cooked as requested, top notch fish ands chips and all other dishes well complemented. The staff were very attentive and very well trained in the art in giving great service, which is very sadly lacking these days!

I speak as I find and not on what I've read, this establishment is well worth a visit. Great beer too!
Thank you for making mine a memorable birthday.
