Today, I felt I should take a reality check on myself before writing to give an honest, non biased and fair description of our experience. Great but not. Arrived at the Stuart Hotel having booked 2 rooms, one double for myself and my partner and a single for my daughter whom we had driven from Norfolk to Luton to collect from Luton airport at 1am. We arrived an hour or so early around lunchtime and with the road outside being very busy, we managed to locate the small car park second time around having spotted the hotel too late and overshooting it. Directly to the left of the unfortunate looking office block building. We found the small car park partly undercover/ under buildings and with various signs of "No Parking, DSS and Private" at the rear, spaces for approx 15 cars. Unsure where we may leave our vehicle, yet pleased to find a space, I left my partner in situ and headed to the reception to ask what to do. The receptionist was lovely! I was warmly greeted and the surroundings were clean modern and freshly painted. Introducing myself, I was assured that parking anywhere was fine where a space could be found and also, that we could check-in straight away. Great! From the road outside and it being so busy, we were really surprised to hear little or no traffic, even before finding our rooms. Confirming our booking was straight forward as was informing reception that we'd need to leave around 12.30am to collect my daughter and we were given 2 passes for the 2 rooms which both turned out to be double rooms. When booking with LateRooms I was given a 'single' room (1 person) option yet at the same price as a double ( for 2 people) , ok..fine. Finding the rooms very clean throughout, (beds where comfortable we found out later) hot water and all was good. My partner and I were deciding which room to take at the same time as trying to work out the air conditioning thermostat as it was quite chilly. Then the telephone in the room next to the bed rang. My partner answered and promptly passed the phone to me, both of us assuming it to be the receptionist - Caller says, "Hello, am I talking to Mrs MyName?" I said "Yes" and it took quite a few moments to realise that it was 'possibly' a call centre not in the UK (please think what you will fellow TripAdvisee's) and I was then being offered a loan of some kind with a direct payment that could be made straight to my bank account should I wish it. The call was aborted from the other end when I said that I didn't understand. I was very confused by this, and a little upset also having only just been allocated these rooms and not a soul (not even my partner), only LateRooms and the Hotel knew of my booking made the previous day and of course, my name. With limited time to ourselves, my partner and I decided to head out to look around the town but stopped at reception to query the air conditioning which is controlled in the reception area, they kindly sorted it out for us but I however, was feeling more concerned about the phone call and queried this. The receptionist told me that she thought the call was from my daughter and transferred it so we may take the call. ( my daughter being 17yrs old, still on holiday in Cyprus at that time was totally unaware that I had booked a hotel to rest for the night )
Collecting her from the airport in the early hours went swimmingly.....
At breakfast we were kindly asked what we'd like to have cooked and in the meantime, we were happy to help ourselves to the selection of juices, coffee/tea (machine), laid out cereals, fruit (tinned peaches and prunes) and mini croissants and we nattered at our table. We never saw or heard one guest during our brief stay, only saw two empty coffee cups at a table at 8.45am. Cooked breakfasts arrived and sadly my daughters sausages were rather 'pink' but she pushed them aside and persevered, my partner and I didn't have sausages but half way through my toast, I found a couple of not too small mould spores that couldn't be confused with anything, but what it was.
Rating the hotel as 'Poor' has left me feeling a little sad because the hotel itself and its staff (minus the mould, pink sausages and the odd phone call) was quite lovely, only a 2 minute walk into the town and a great location for an airport stopover or longer to spend time Luton.
