“Perfect restaurant venue for private party”
Reviewed January 22, 2014

We recently celebrated my 60th birthday with a buffet lunch for 50 people at the Watermill Theatre Restaurant. It was a Sunday and there was no performance at the theatre so we had exclusive use of the restaurant, bar and surrounding area. I had planned the event (timings, room layout, menu, etc) in advance with Clem, the Restaurant Manager, and the chef, and everything was perfect. The food (4-course hot and cold buffet) was excellent and Clem and his team ensured that everything ran smoothly from start to finish. The venue is very special, from the big log fire where guests were greeted on arrival with a glass of mulled wine to the grounds where you can stroll by the river and watch the ducks. If you're looking for a party venue for 40 - 64 people on a Sunday (or weekday lunchtime) in the West Berkshire / South Oxfordshire area, then look no further!

“Top class performances and good food too!”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

We have been visiting this beautiful little Theatre for 40 years and have never seen a bad production yet. For the last 10 years, the restaurant too has never disappointed. Clem, the Manager runs a happy team of staff, some of whom are students who come back year after year in their holidays. The quality of good home cooking means we now always book lunch or a pre performance dinner before a show. This we did today.
For 13 years now, we have built up a normal family tradition and today, we took our 4 grandchildren, plus two parents, to this year's Christmas Play, Pinoccio. The whole family, from 83, to teenagers and down to the 4 year old, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. To call it Pantomime would be an insult, as I have never liked Pantomime, but these productions are far superior to any Pantomime I ever saw. No double meanings or stupid jokes, just wholesome entertainment. There are not many days left now to enjoy this, but if you are lucky, you may still get tickets. Otherwise, either book for next year to see Peter Pan, or book for any of the other productions on offer this year. The venue is beautiful and on dry days you can enjoy a walk around the grounds or sit at a table on the lawn and enjoy your drink away from the maddening crowds of London.

“Theatre in a Rural Setting”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

Forget about the West End for a day and visit this unique theatre in the middle of the countryside. Literally at the end of a country lane this old mill has been turned into a theatre that puts on top-rated shows. Before you go inside you'll be surprised to see their collection of ducks waddling around the lawn and paddling in the wide trout stream behind. The foyer is a bit pokey but there is a bar and restaurant and when there is decent weather there are the lawns. The food in the restaurant is a bit pricey so we tend to go there as a treat but when we have eaten there we found it a very pleasant experience. Simpler, cheaper fare is available at the Blackbird pub on the lane on the way to the theatre. No picnics are allowed in the theatre grounds, which is a shame, but I can understand this from space, aesthetic and economic points of view. A couple of summers ago we had a lovely picnic in some woods about a mile away. You'll be amazed by the intimate scale of the auditorium with a stage so small - friends of ours could not imagine shows like Witches of Eastwick and Sunset Boulevard being successful there but they were. It's about 70 miles away from us so we don't get there often but we've seen all sorts of shows there and have never been disappointed. We always catch the excellent summer musical which in recent years has been directed by Craig Revel Horwood - often to be seen around the place at the start of the run and totally approachable friendly.

“Nice theatre, poor restaurant ”
Reviewed December 22, 2013 via mobile

Cute little theatre in an pretty setting.
The restaurant is the only downfall. The choice looks grand but the actual food is really poor. We ate after the performance so we may of been rushed. We were a group of four that gave back almost full plates to the waitress who didn't question what was wrong. The food was bland with no presentation.
The bar does offer snacks and we enjoyed a cheese board before the play. This was good and a generous portion (4 of us shared a platter for 2).
If I were to go back, I would drink at the bar, enjoy the show but eat elsewhere.

“Christmas Lunch at the Barn Restaurant”
Reviewed December 12, 2013

I visited the Mill today for a National trust volunteer (Sandham Memorial Chapel) lunch in the barn & just had to say that the meal we had was top quality.
I guess we had a special group menu but if all the food here is of the same quality then it is to be recommended.
Just the right amount & very nicely presented.
Will certainly be back sometime.
Keep up the good work.
