“Bit Disappointing!”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

Having read the good reviews we were looking forward to our trip to Newbury and one night stay at the Hare and Hounds. We were put in the stable block and we were expecting the room to be small having read this in the reviews and the bathroom is only about two feet wide but adequate and clean so far so good. We had booked a table for dinner only to be shown a table right by the door (it was a cold windy evening) so we asked to be moved. We were told to wait in the bar area where we were then told at least three times to move (the gap between the bar and the tables is very narrow). So after much shuffling about we were finally seated. We had wanted to eat at 8.30 pm but we were told that to avoid a long wait could we come at 7.40 pm. We agreed to this and ordered promptly only to still have a forty minute wait!!. They were very busy and only had two chefs on the waitress kept saying. If they know they are going to be that busy then surely they should employ more staff. My husband had the venison which was tasty but overcooked. I had the fish platter which was lovely apart from the cod was slightly overcooked and the it was all smothered in butter, I would have preferred this to be in a separate jug. They were very busy again at breakfast and we were told to wait in the reception area, the staff looked very harrassed. We did enjoy the breakfast but it arrived again after a long wait. So overall, not too bad but not as good as we thought our stay was going to be.

Dear Julia G
Firstly I do apologise if we did not meet your expectations.
It would appear that our relaxed friendly way can some times be misconstrued.
We were particularly busy, - however I find it difficult to believe my staff would ever TELL our guest what to do in the way implied?
In regards to your other points, the cod dish is cooked in the butter as shown on the menu, our Breakfasts are freshly cooked so do take longer but I feel its a great British tradition that is worth the wait (unlike many chain hotels), and the room was as descibed but the bathroom would appear to have shrunk overnight!
I do understand your right to be subjective, and my staff were upset that they had been misinterpreted but none the less asked that I apologised if they were in anyway below par.

Many thanks

Stayed here last night between two days of meetings. Not the normal kind of place I would stay but i couldn't get in any where.

The room was great comfortable newly decorated and clean, the bar served real ales and had some very interesting fellow travellers and locals in, who were all friendly and happy to share their evening with me talking and putting the world to rights.

The food was well home cooked fayre and was very very tasty, I had the steak and ale pie, I have NEVER seen so much steak in a pie it came with fresh well cooked and presented vegetables. The Landlord/owner was a very friendly guy as were all the staff, the breakfast was again well presented and wholesome. I will stay here again when next in the area, they deserve our custom especially with the number of pubs closing weekly!!

Dear Parpot
Many thanks for your kind words.
It is always good to hear we have exceeded expectation and we do work very hard to ensure a "home from home" feel.
Ultra modern, high end, pretentious we are not, BUT we are we believe; well priced, friendly, a good bar & restaurant, freshly cooked English breakfast included in all rates, Free Wifi and much more.
Mostly we are proud to care about all our guests and as such really do appreciate your taking the time to leave a review
Thank you and we hope to see you agin

We have stayed here for the past 3 years in November for the Hennessey Gold Cup at Newbury Race course and we would not stay anywhere else, The bar is friendly with great food and the rooms are very clean and very comfortable and the staff just amazing, it is a real home from home and we have booked again for this year, The hotel is within walking distance of Newbury Town Centre and the race course but for those who prefer not to walk or are short on time the hotel uses a local taxi driver who lives just round the corner. We love it.

Stayed for three fab nights and as the title says "What a GEM" from the moment we arrived to the time we checked out we felt part of the family..... the suite room was excellent in all respects from space to cleanliness felt like being at home rather than a hotel and for the price outstanding value
All the staff were genuinely welcoming, attentive, enthusiastic and nothing was too much trouble Food and service throughout our stay was again to high standards. Perhaps some larger chain hotels "and yes we have tried many "would benefit from sending their employees inc managers there to see how it should be done. Will surely be back soon can't fault it .....well done to all at the Hare and Hounds WHAT A TEAM ........The Birds

Room Tip: the suite room is fab try it you wont be dissapointed

My whole family stayed here for a very special birthday celebration. The staff were extremely helpful with everything we asked for, and the rooms were comfortable and individual - we loved the accommodation being around a courtyard, separate from the main building but not far away. The hotel is pet-friendly, and the service was excellent. Food in the restaurant was good, although not outstanding. Car-parking was easy - plenty of space in the hotel car-park. Overall, a very enjoyable stay, and this hotel is highly recommended.

Dear Rory M
it's always a pleasure to know we have looked after our guests and even more so on a special occasion! Our cottage rooms are very popular and I do believe worth that little extra cost following their refurbishment.
Many thanks for taking the time to pass on your kind comments,

We booked this hotel from the States as a nice way to breakup a trip to/from London and Bath without having any knowledge of the area. After arriving, the hotel definitely exceeded our expectations. The hotel and restaurant/bar area are very relaxed and we felt comfortable at all times during our stay. Jon, the innkeeper, made it feel like a true old time "inn" experience as he was involved in all parts of our stay including booking a table for supper and then stopping by to check on us while we were eating. He also provided a brief history of the property and surrounding area. We truly appreciated the opportunity to have a sit down breakfast in the morning. We would definitely stay here again and recommend this hotel to friends and family.

Hey Alex and all
Thanks for the innkeeper tag! Don't forget to try to catch Michael Portillo's train journey programme in January when our humble Inn will hit the big time! And I apologise now for my ham acting, if you follow our facebook page I will post when its on and you can show our Inn to the folks back in the States!
Enjoy the rest of your trip

Stayed at the hare and hounds to go to the Highclere Game fair, how refreshing to find somewhere that treats your pets as apart of the family. We will definitely be staying here next year.... The restraunt food was also very good, all the staff were very pleasant and friendly.
