Having read the good reviews we were looking forward to our trip to Newbury and one night stay at the Hare and Hounds. We were put in the stable block and we were expecting the room to be small having read this in the reviews and the bathroom is only about two feet wide but adequate and clean so far so good. We had booked a table for dinner only to be shown a table right by the door (it was a cold windy evening) so we asked to be moved. We were told to wait in the bar area where we were then told at least three times to move (the gap between the bar and the tables is very narrow). So after much shuffling about we were finally seated. We had wanted to eat at 8.30 pm but we were told that to avoid a long wait could we come at 7.40 pm. We agreed to this and ordered promptly only to still have a forty minute wait!!. They were very busy and only had two chefs on the waitress kept saying. If they know they are going to be that busy then surely they should employ more staff. My husband had the venison which was tasty but overcooked. I had the fish platter which was lovely apart from the cod was slightly overcooked and the it was all smothered in butter, I would have preferred this to be in a separate jug. They were very busy again at breakfast and we were told to wait in the reception area, the staff looked very harrassed. We did enjoy the breakfast but it arrived again after a long wait. So overall, not too bad but not as good as we thought our stay was going to be.
